Here's my story for the year: This year, my grandmother's mental health really deteriorated. Dementia really set in fast, and she was depressed all the time. So... we got her a kitten! It's this adorable ball of grey-white fluff, and the most energetic critter. Grandma is so much happier, she follows the kitty around all day, brushes her, laughs a lot more. And the kitten just cuddles up to her all the time! I'm planning to spend New Years with them :)

My story:

Growing up, Christmas was always a special time, especially when my Granny would come to visit. She always brought such a warmth to the house that lacked throughout the year and she made a point to wear Christmas-y sweaters, buy Hershey's Kisses and over all spoil my sisters and I. She started the family tradition of putting the bows on top of your head and wearing it throughout the day.

Its been 12 years since she passed and not a day goes by I don't miss her, but Christmas is a lovely time for me to remember the best times I had as a kid. c:

Funny story:

Three racehorses were standing in a stable bragging to each other one day. The first horse boasts "I've been in 59 races and I've won 35 of them." "That's nothing," says the second horse. "I've raced 97 times, and I've won 78 of them!" The third horse joins in: "Well, I've raced 122 times and I've won 102!" Just then, the horses hear a voice say, "I've got you all beat!" The horses look down and sees a greyhound. "I've raced over 200 times, and I have NEVER lost!" The horses look at the dog in amazement. One of them says "How about that! A talking dog!"

My funny story: One time I was hanging out at a friends house and her parents had just had new carpet put in. We were just watching a movie on the couch but there was no coffee table or anything to set or soda on so I just set my glass on the floor in front of me. Her cat Al comes over and lays down on the floor in front of the couch and stretches out on toward so I tell him "Al you better not spill that soda," he looks up at me and then back at the glass and stretches his paw out closer to glasses then looks back up at me and I say "Al don't you dare." He looks back at the glass stretches his toes out and purposefully knocks the glass over. If a cat could laugh I swear he was laughing. I didn't know where the paper towels were or anything else to wipe up the spill and since he found it so funny I picked him up and wiped the spill with him while my friend went and got something to properly clean up with. When she came back with the supplies we cleaned up and Al sat on the stairs and glared at me. When it was all cleaned up I asked him, "So Al, is was it worth it?" and he gives me this big slow wink like "Yes, yes it was."

Our family is not very big, but I have some cousins which I rarely see because we live too far away of each other. But on christmas the family usually gets together so I see them as well. Most of the times we "younger ones" leave the big party to celebrate on our own - and that is so much fun, I love it. And I think the parent generation is happy with that as well, so they can talk about us :-D

My Story~ One year at our house during a particularly bad year, my parents had no money for gifts. My mom didn't even put out a tree 'cause she was so down about not being able to get us anything. I spent what money I had to make sure each one of my family got something. I stayed up Christmas night and made my own little Christmas tree out of construction paper so I'd have a place to put their presents. It was a very small Christmas, but I will always remember it.

My deserving people 1. 2. 3. My funny story. On Christmas last year we decided to wrap our 2 dogs a gift. Our older dog just sat there looking at it and then walked away. Our younger dog ripped the paper off the gift we gave her and then ripped the paper off the gift for the older dog and sat on the floor with 2 bones between her paws wanting to keep them both.

A couple of years ago I was visiting relatives for Christmas. My cousins were still toddlers, and very excited to see Santa. They also have cats and the friendliest and most fearless rescue dog I've ever known, a huge black mix of a labrador, german shepherd and Karelian bear dog. Turns out that when Santa finally knocked on the door, both my cousins and the massive dog hurried to hide under the bed. None of us managed to bribe them to come out until Santa had left :')

this is a very recent anecdote actually, and not related to christmas but my birthday! you see, i turned 20 last thursday. on sunday, i was cooking dinner when my mom entered the kitchen. i mentioned i stayed up pretty late the night before because i was skyping with my friend. (i live in finland, friend lives in germany.)

well, my mom goes: "how old was that friend of yours again?" and i tell her she's 18. now, my mom replies: "oh, 18? i could've sworn she was younger than you."

i was like "what?" and stared at her for a good 5 seconds before she realized what she said. :'D

My three deserving people:

As both the families of my mom and my dad have always had real candles on their trees, we have them as well, and there are certain traditions about it. First, my dad explains every year again how much space you need to leave above a candle so it won't burn the tree and doublechecks every candle we put up, twice, although we help putting them on the tree every year. Then on christmas eve, my parents always have the same little discussion about where to put the emergency water bucket - my dad wants it in front for accessibility, my mom wants it behind because it doesn't look good. It usually ends up behind, but then again, our tree hasn't ever burned yet. The best tradition though is after the feast and presents. When all is said and done, we usually spend the late hours munching cookies, chatting, looking at the tree, the room only illuminated by the candles on it, and betting which will be the last to go out, and only when we finally know, we get up in the dark and go to bed. The best at betting: my little sis!

Every year when I lived at home, I always remember getting to open one present on Christmas Eve. This is something my mom started with me and my sister and we have continued this with our children. My daughter who is almost 21, still gets to open one present on Christmas Eve, a new pair of Christmas/Winter PJ's to wear to bed Christmas Eve night, so when you get up Christmas morning to see what Santa brought you look all cute and festive.

As far as Christmas memories go, I'd have to say waking up when I was very little and seeing an enormous Barbie Corvette Car inside my living room. It was one of those kiddie cars that you could drive, but it was bright pink and a corvette. It just looked so strange in my living room, surrounded by brown furniture and red and gold Christmas decorations. Other than that, last year I got to spend Christmas with my cousin and her two little sons which was very nice. The kids were really cute as they ran around destroying the house.
