The script ran through 150k IDs, regardless of whether or not the IDs were active. A programmer was set in place to be watching the roll out of the trees and they should have noticed someone was horribly wrong long before they did. Also, which programmer was it who started running a multiple year old script for a system not even used anymore? It had to be manually pushed. And why did it take so long for anyone to even notice something was wrong and shut the site down? Had that been done immediately it would have had very little impact to do a small rollback.
And then this:
"We will be updating you as soon as possible (this could mean it might take a few days) with the link to the Trees so you can open your gifts properly."
It's now the 29th and the only updates we've gotten from staff are:
1 - Gifts will be given anonymously this year.
2 - There are no significant updates at this time.
Still, saying the script ran through 150k ids is a lot different than saying the issue is affecting 150k people. 😅 I understand you're all frustrated but jumping down staffs throats saying why didn't you notice this immediately!!, why did you make a human mistake!!, etc. isn't going to solve anything. It's the holidays, and staff take time away from their families to open the trees for us. It's understandable that they might have been a little more distracted than usual since, you know, they're visiting their families just like everyone else. Staff is human just like everyone else, and while I understand it's their job, I also understand that they are people and mistakes happen. I'm just as upset as everyone else that trees are bugged right now, but I'm trying to be patient and understanding that it's the holidays and busy time for both users and staff. 8)
You don't need to update me on what staff has and hasn't said, I'm very aware of what's happening. Staff said that it would take a few days, and to no one's surprise it is taking a few days. While I'm not entirely sure, I imagine it's something Keith might have to fix, but he's currently on a religious trip with very little internet access. Yesterday Amber made a comment on the news post with a small update:
They might be given anonymously. They're probably trying to fix it, especially since it's important for some people.
Well, let's just say that my first Lumi has not been as fun as I expected. XD
From my experience in coding, one fix = a million more bugs to have to deal with. It's not fun, and there's really no way to catch everything wrong with a script. There's a reason why sites like FR frequently goes down for maintenance, or why online games have patches.
That being said, chill, people. It's a website, they're pixels, and while it's disappointing to people not to be able to get their gifts, you have to remember that the staff are only human and they're going to make very human mistakes. Instead of leaping down their throats about "HOW COULD THIS HAVE HAPPENED", maybe show some more support?
Also, on the question of why not a rollback, I highly doubt the staff predicted it would take this long to get trees up, or even this happening in the first place. Rbs in my experience from multiple sites and games have never been fun, and people would have still been angry at the staff. They did what they thought was the best reaction, so maybe appreciate the fact that the Subeta team actually cares about the userbase.
Everything that I wanted to say has been said already, so I'm just going to quote others that I agree 100% with.
Also, looking at the luminaire forum, people are still putting gifts under trees. No official word if this will even work, if people will still be getting the gifts added to the trees after the 25th? Again, communication.
I want to be patient. I want to be forgiving. (it's the season after all) But I'm getting fed up.
Agreed on "rollbacks are terrible"
I lost birthday gifts one year because of a rollback, so I'd rather not have to deal with the hassle of remembering everything I got via gift center and other gifts.
I am also curious about this, can I still gift? I'd like to if possible.
A textbook example of nightmares in automation. Someone can not stop the donut machine on time, and it buries the factory with donuts. I'd rather try a small batch and be in person there before going full speed ahead.
Can the staff reassure us that they can find all the info they need, and a way to fully fix this before reopening the gifts... instead of taking shortcuts?
Looks like next year I'm only giving presents through the gift center. Luckily I was lazy and only have a couple of friends still active and none of us got hit by the glitch. However now I feel a bit greedy as my one friend used the gift center and it makes me feel like I didn't give her anything as it's stuck still under her tree. :|

i'm pretty disappointed that there hasn't been a news post to keep us updated re. the tree situation/to inform us about the possibility of anonymous gifts yet to be honest.
Edit: I've just read back to the last page to read a post from a staff member about the tree situation. Even if there's been no significant progress, why has the post, aka the only/latest update we're getting, just been posted on this thread and not a public announcement??? Why does it feel like everything's being kept secretive?
Usually in situations like this, you can have a good thorough solution or a quick solution that maybe doesn't cover everything. I agree that the programmers should try to fix as much as they can before releasing trees, but at the same time I'm sure most of us don't want to wait until late next month to finally get our items.
Hopefully there can be some sort of compromise, although I know it will be difficult to please everyone.
ikr? My first Lumi as well and it's plagued with problems XD ah well, I mostly just feel bad for the staff having to bust their buttocks to try and fix it. Probably was not a relaxing holiday for any of them.
Signature cleared by staff.
Can I add that this is another reason to add to my list of reasons of wanting the option to remove items from under trees. That way people could have had the option to wait out the tree glitch, or remove items and send them via the Gift Center.
I strongly agree that there should have been a rollback. The site should have been taken down for these things to be fixed. If the amount of users affected is as much as people are saying, this is incredibly unprofessional to depend on the users to delete the items. I can promise you right now at least 30% of the people affected by the glitch are not honest enough to get rid of the items.
I would appreciate a siteupdate ping just saying "we're still trying to fix this" than nothing at all until people complain. I get that after a major issue we tend to get something like "hey guys, this is what went wrong and this is what we had to do to fix it, and we did this so it shouldn't happen again" which is great but it's nice to know that it's being worked on and (if possible) what the holdup is.
The glitch didn't affect me personally, it probably affected some people I gifted but I don't mind not being thanked. I would like to see my gifts before I accidentally buy a CW someone already gave me, but that's on me because I could have done it the whole rest of the month already.
I keep checking the news page for some update, even a thread, but nothing. I think this may be the most poorly handled fubar in my time here. I don't mind if gifts are given anonymously but I'd like to see some development.
I don't know what bothering me more; the suspense as to when the trees will be ready to open our gifts OR not being able to shop atm at all due to that because I'm too scared I'm gonna end up buying something I have already been gifted.
My bday is in a few days and I tend to splurge on that day on wardrobe items I have wanted all year. Now I can't do that unless I want possible doubles of some things whenever the trees end up opening. ;_;
THIS. Plus I got some CSC and there are things in the Boutique that I want that I know are going to retire soon, but they are on my WL and if they are sitting under my tree, I want to spend that CSC on something else!!
Yeah, same here. I'm glad they're at least trying their hardest to fix it - I hate that of course the big giant mess happens on Christmas Day!
But as much as I hate not being able to open stuff yet, I agree with everyone else that I'm willing to wait so that hopefully they can get it all sorted out. Hopefully the Lumi trees won't still be up on our pages in like March, though. XD
