Can we have a proper thread? I know the news comments are popping off, but how about a thread.

I'm so, so happy we got this change, I haven't been this excited about subeta in years. I've already renamed about a dozen of my pets, and I'm probably going to actually fill out my spare pet slots. I've been sitting on four empty slots because all the names I could think of were taken. Now I can bring so many of my OCs onto the site, find the perfect species/color combo, commission overlays, build pet treasures... I might actually play the site again.

Thank you staff, this rules.

I'm happy the change was finally made and that we have a conclusion to the whole thing at last. Being in limbo over it made me feel more uncertain about what to do with all my pets. Now that it's finally been done, I have been able to rename my pets accordingly and change some around.

As for the change itself, it was honestly much needed. I say this as someone who has been a name clearing fanatic since I ever seen knew what a name clearing was. I have waited anxiously after classes to go snag names at 3 pm. I get the effort that so many have put into having THE Scout or the "one and only" Cloud. And sure, I'll miss being the only one to have these names.

But if Subeta is going to keep allowing people to grow their pet families, and if creating characters for pets is going to remain a big part of what makes Subeta stand out--it was a change that inevitably was going to have to happen for the best. Unique names just wouldn't have been a sustainable system.

I agree, I am pretty happy over this. I have been wanting to create a few pets with names already taken, and I HATE the thought of stealing them flat out. This is incredible for me.

As I have said in the comment section, regardless of a "unique" name YOU make your pet unique by the work done, the love poured into it. You continue working on a pet and make it yours, don't get upset cuz someone else shares the same pet name as yours, please ignore that and focus on making yours even more special to yourself!

I'm so excited about this!!!! I've been waiting for literal years to have slight tweaks to some of my pets' names - like a 9 year wait to change Endermen to Enderman - and I can barely even put into words how happy I am right now.

Its been more years than I can count the last time I was this happy with Subeta and this excited to play. Maybe 2009 or 2010? This change is HUGE and I'm so glad that staff finally made it!!!!

Said it on the news post and I'll say it here! I absolutely adore this change. I've been an active user for 12 years, and I've done more then my fair share of Name Hunting. There was one name I stalked for a good few years that I was constantly checking back in on, because the user was one of those people who'd log on once a year just to save their names. I've spent literal hundreds of dollars on changing my pet names.

I've never cared about having an unique name, I just wanted those names because I had stories to tell with them. So I'm more then happy to share if anyone wants the same names. I know a lot of people think this change will ruin 'creativity', but I mean. There was never anything stopping people from making the same character just with a different name. What makes a pet creative isn't the name, it's the way you tell their story and create their design.

I for one will be spending even More money on the site in order to buy more pet slots, now that I can create as many characters as I want with no restrictions.

Edit: Another thing I've seen mentioned that I feel the need to agree on. I have a lot of pets that I've only been holding on to because I like the name. I didn't have any actual inspiration for them, but I was holding on to them out of fear that I would one day, but the name would have been taken in that time. Which made me feel guilty, wondering how many users wanted the name I was holding on to. So this has definitely elevated that specific stress and I can finally clear out those pets.

In addition - I'm so glad that people can have my names now. I only had a few desirable names, but I felt so guilty sitting on Antonio in particular, and doing fuck all with that pet. There's no way I'd ever give him up, so best of both worlds on this one.

I was never one of those users that bothered about names. I just worked around the unique name system by combining words that I liked.

What I'm happy about is getting a free pet rename with a GA.

EDIT: I think staff might have to increase the number of slots that you can purchase to coincide with this change.

My one and only complaint is how dare y'all do this so late in the evening on a Sunday. Expecting me to work tomorrow.

No really though I'm so happy this is the route the site (and/or Keith) decided to go and all the possibilities for enjoyment to come. And the four or five overlays I need to redo and submit and the recolors.

Also very excited for any other potential pet changes that could happen in the future. Just very happy right now, outside of the fact I should be asleep and should be productive at work tomorrow (lol...).

Ps: just in case it was missed when editing a pet profile the preview & view links still direct to the pets/petname link (regardless of it being a legacy pet or not). Perhaps that needs to be changed to ID link instead?

As someone who has been on Subeta for a very long time... I love this change.

Don't get me wrong. I've done my fair share of refreshing the site at 12:00 PST to try and grab a name. Or WAY back in the day -- waiting for SubetaTeam to announce a manual clearing and trying desperately to get my names when thousands freed up in one go. I remember one of the log-in glitches way back in.. 2008? Who knows. Where frozen accounts had their last login dates restarted. And you'd wait a year, and then however many months it took for Subeta to do a name clearing...

And I've gotten some good names doing that. And gotten some good names from generous people (like the person that gave me Leif - I'm forever indebted to you!). I've also lost some names I really wanted. And I tried to do work arounds by making up ridiculous nicknames for my characters, or naming fan pets after their ship names (cough Leokumi cough). And a whole host of other things.

But now, not only can my characters have their real names, but anyone else's can too! Or people can have the names of their real life pets. Or their real life kids. Or their favorite fanpet. The options are ENDLESS. And there are still so many things to make each pet stand out (like people that collect IDs. Or treasures. Or overlays or-- the list goes on and on and on).

This is the most excited I've been about working on my pets in years. I'm so excited for this change!

Just got home, subscribed, and also bought a fair amount of CSC in celebration! I feel super hyped up and ready to work on pets for the first time in ages, I just don't know who to start with...! (Then again, I do have 101 pets...)

I used to be able to deal with the hunt for a good pet name, but nowadays I work fulltime (in a frankly physically and emotionally draining job) and have other responsibilities, and it just... gets exhausting very quickly, and I started settling on things that I wasn't sure I actually liked, because I wasn't sure I'd be able to find anything better (at least not without investing more time and energy than I had at the moment.)

It actually took me a while to fill my most recent pet slot because I was having so much trouble finding a name that I thought might inspire a character idea -- and the one I eventually settled on because I thought I might be able to work with it, is one of the several pets I have that I haven't actually managed to do anything with because the name just isn't clicking in the way I hoped that it might -- but that I've also been afraid to adopt out, because what if eventually I end up coming up with an idea for that name...?

For me if the name doesn't "feel" right for the character, I'll end up stuck and unable to develop them -- and I've actually had a number of pet ideas that I was unable to use because I couldn't find a fitting name that felt right.

For myself and a number of others, the unique name system was absolutely discouraging creativity, not encouraging it. Not everyone is able to figure out an alternative name that works for a specific character idea, which lead to certain characters not making it to Subeta. Again, I've had several characters I would've liked to bring here because they would be fun to build treasure chests for, but couldn't find workable names for, so they stayed offsite.

So I'm very, very excited about this change, because I no longer have to worry about that, nor do I have to hold onto names that I'm not sure I'll be able to work with! That's to say nothing of no longer needing to watch accounts and hope for them to go inactive, or the pet name drama that I've thankfully only heard tales of.

While this is a big change and I do sort of wish we had gotten a poll and perhaps more warning, I think overall it's a positive for a lot of us pet people. There's so much excitement here and it looks like people are already jumping in and using them. One of my friends was finally able to get a pet, which they've had for 10+ years, their proper name, and they're considering coming back to the site after a long hiatus. I'm so stoked!

So far I've only done one name change, but I haven't felt so motivated to work on pets in ages. I've got a couple of other pets whose names need correcting as well, and I think I'll work on finally updating some profiles as I go!

Yay So glad to hear this. I love collecting good pet names but I feel guilty hoarding them when I’m too lazy to fix up profiles. Definitely going to change Sweeter’s name into something that fits the character better!

I am delighted by the change. There were a few names I found that I was hanging on to "just in case" because they were "good", and it is really freeing to not be holding them

My Subetaversary is coming up on Aug 1. I will have been on this site 12 years. In that time I've seen a lot of changes. This is, by far, one of the best ones.

There are many things that make a pet unique and I think that with people allowed to choose the names of their actual OCs or favorite characters there were be more ability to flex creative juices.

When I get pet slots, I troll for names that catch my love, and many a time I have lamented because I found a name that I adore on a name site, only to find it taken on Subeta.

This is especially exciting for me now, as I adopted a birb, but his name is taken, so I have a sort-of-next-best-thing name prepared. Now I can give my new pet the name I want, and he can be my own little Subeta pet avatar of my real life birb! happy dance
