Thanks, I hate it.

I've been excited for this change since I started lurking on the suggestion topic. There had been several names I had wanted since I joined the site nearly 13 years ago and I knew for a fact I could never have them. I don't think I could wait out for the chance that someone would quit/change their pet name/adopt out... cause I've had some bad luck with snagging pet names in the past. I've tried alternatives ... I've tried to be creative but in the end sometimes you don't WANT any other name because it just doesn't work. Some names have too much meaning and even a nickname doesn't always work.
What really can sting was name hoarding for the sake of name hoarding. You're allowed to have the names you keep and you don't have to work on your pets you own but at the same time it was very... depressing...I don't know the right term to put there. It was disheartening to see a name taken and sitting on an inactive account. I don't understand but I learned to accept it. My interest in pets waned for a while but I have to admit this change has revived my interest. I don't think I'll ever be as.. into pets as I once was but who knows how things go in the future.
Sorry I just wanted to get this off my chest and I hope I didn't upset anyone.
I am very happy for this change because it allowed me to have pet with the name of my Final Fantasy XIV character. Because a few months ago when I decided I wanted to have a pet named after him, I was a little sad about it when I discovered his name was taken and I just really did not want to put some weird letters or underscores just to have it.
So I am happy that I can have the name Celi for my FFXIV character! I have never really creative with names anyway. Most of my pets are fanpets. Celi is only one I could say is an OC. Now I just need to decide on what color to make him. :)
I also renamed a couple of pets slightly. And will be renaming 3 others completely once I can think of something.
Love this change!
This, pretty much. I still don't see how using HeIeena or Helen4 or Elaeina or Helena_230 is a better thing overall than getting duplicate unique names.
It doesn't feel more creative to me, it feels like someone won and everybody else lost. And again, unique names didn't encourage getting out and meeting people - it encouraged hoarding, autorefreshing and a unneeded competitive spirit. I don't look back on that era with nostalgia - I look back and think of the people that got 2-3 messages a week to ask if they're adopting X or Y out.
I'm glad that's gone. I'm so so glad it's gone.
I mean, I pride myself on my pet arrangement on my lookup, I love the way it looks, and that's how I express my creativity. My names were 90% placeholders before - it wasn't creative. It was just names I had for the sake of having pets.
Now, I have the pet names I want, and the pets I want. I just need to stop being lazy and work on profiles
I do feel for the people who hate this change, and I can understand being hurt by it. Time, effort, energy, etc. I'd say money but technically we all got what we paid for at the time (I spent thousands on renames, not exaggerating).
At the end of the day, though, this was long overdue. said it best @ we actively hoped people left, or forgot to log in, so we could grab their names. That's a terrible business model and I'm glad that chapter has passed, and has been overly received very well. I haven't seen this many gold accounts since pet slots were tied to them, and the forums already appear to be more active!
Personally I'm slow rolling with name changes (13 or so, so far) but that's mostly because this happened late in the day on a Sunday. I've got two overlays submitted so far, two more to go, bought a ton of books, sorting out IDs, and planning to spend the weekend uploading art and working on profiles and TCs and spinning ideas with friends. I haven't been this motivated in a long time, and I'm super excited to see what other changes may happen.
I'm really glad the site took this giant leap and it gives me a lot of hope for the sites longevity and I'm already enjoying seeing all the creativity come from people <3
I haven't been active in the last year (just occasionally logging on to see what I missed) but once I saw the announcement on Subeta's tumblr, I hopped over here right away!
I am all for this! I'm not sure what to rename my pets yet (I've been wanting to rename Melisha last time I was active, can't remember to what though) but I might make some memorial pets for my old cats who have passed away in the last few years.
So, I just realised when I first started my personal quest to get all of the platonic solids as pet names it was 2015. I didn't end that quest until 2019.
That's 4 years to get all of the pet names I really wanted, and honestly I do question how healthy that level of obsession had to have been. Checking people's profiles on the reg to see if the account will be going inactive any time soon - to the point that I would get agitated if I was somewhere without a decent internet connection for longer than a day - ain't a good look. (Especially after considering Sopheroo's comment about 'literally hoping for the userbase to shrink' - because I was).
Even aside from all the positive reactions of people excited to get names they've always wanted (it's been really, genuinely wholesome and I love it), I'm glad from this point forward nobody has to feel tempted to reach the levels of absurd obsession over virtual pet names that I (and probably a few other peeps) did. It's chill. We don't need this to be a competition any more.
So I quit Subeta a while ago, I still check in every now and then but never managed to roll back into it. So I was casually scrolling fb when I saw the pet name thing posted there. I was busy and didn't remember until now.
I'm on a HIGH of dopamine or whatever gives you the happy feeling. LIKE HOLY SHIT FINALLY THE NAMES I REALLY LOVE. Finally new inspiration! Less limits! BEST NAMES EVERRRRRR.
Did I love my pet names before? Yes of course I did, I worked hard to get them. But now I can own my grandpa his actual name, my auntie who recently passed away her name (which fit the character of the pet beautifully!), my cats their names, etc etc.
I'm hyped beyond words to start on them all now. This changes everything! Time to start planning out pet colours, rewriting pet profiles, start on art. I can even scream into the void now because I own "void" :D

That's a blessing for memorial pets, and I'm really glad because they actually help people moving on. Fanpets for people who passed away, or pets who crossed the rainbow bridge have always been a favorite of mine, because they're always so heartfelt, so geniune.
Also, I also own Void, so let's scream into the void together.
It is. My auntie was called "Josephine" which sounds so regal and my regal character was just being settled on a new pet so this is just perfect. I'm thrilled that this was made possible. Grabbed my late uncle his name as well.
Omg you got void too, this is so good. Then there is more void to scream into!
[edit] I was so inactive I forgot that I could grab my loyalty box: You have been given 1 extra pet slot, for a total of 64 Back to your items!
Wohoo another name to add to the collection.

Hahah I was also tempted to name a pet Void!! That purple experiment with the white eyes. I’m going back and forth between naming that one Void, or a nightmare harvester. Or perhaps a nightmare harvester named Nothing. (And I just realized, I had a slight anxiety about posting a petname idea, before I remembered there’s no concern anymore!!)
I have Null and Void, because I really like themed pairings (I also got Alpha and Omega. And well, my entire lineup of numbered Ontras.)
Also, clearly you should do both because
Time to pray for a Quest-a-Thon because I have so many ideas. All of the ideas. All of them
AND MAN, THE FEAR OF REVEALING MY CONCEPTS IS SUCH A MOOD. So glad I don't have that anxiety anymore.
Like, I was afraid of doing anything with my pets and now, I'm doing a profile, filling a treasure chest and writing a story with such confidence.
I was also thinking that we definitely need a quest-a-ton now to grab everyone back into staying.
Just get them both.
Void will be this little shit for me:

I just grabbed my loyalty box, got another pet slot and grabbed "London" I WANTED THIS NAME FOR SO LONG

Y’all are so supportive and I should probably do both lol. Insert that .gif of the characters from El Dorado going “both, both is good” XD
Not too sure what a quest-a-thon is but so many people are advocating for one and it’s exciting!
I have a memorial pet myself, OsirisTroy.
Sopheroo, were you afraid of revealing concepts because someone might take them?
Wow, that's an interesting perspective.
I'm even happier now after learning we don't have to pay CSC for renaming pets. I can just adopt a pet that I like and change the name if I see fit. I've been thinking of adopting a pet with a Pokemon legacy name. I'll change it but I'll have the pet's story include that Pokemon somehow.

Yeah, pretty much. I was really insecure about this and it stunted my pet profiles for years!
I'll be honest - when I saw the news post, I really didn't know what to think. I'm one of those pet-obsessed Subetans (100 pets at that point), who would be refreshing on pet clearings to try and nab particular names. But the run-up to name clearings would always feel super stressful, especially on those occasions where the current owner would suddenly sign back in a few hours before the account was due to clear.
So overall, despite what I thought when this was originally mentioned as a suggestion, I think I'm actually in favour - Terracoon can finally be named Sid (and will be once I've sorted my pets out a little more), and all that 'name clearing stress' has been removed. Ok, I won't be the only person with a particular name of pet, but does that really matter in the grand scheme of things?
All I need to do now, is figure out how to do the pet link (like pet=Terracoon) for a non-unique name, so the site knows which pet I'm actually wanting to link!

Hey, another pet-crazy person here! I've got 63 pets. :)
I never participated in the name clearing stuff, though I had pangs of regret when I found a name that I found pretty and didn't have space to adopt the pet.
Glad you've come to accept the change after some period of thought!
I'll have to familiarize myself with the new code as well, but something tells me I might not use it often due to how I like to name my pets. :)

I can't say I think this was a good idea at all honestly. In my opinion it takes out all unique creativity and originality behind the pets & their characters/stories. The names people came up with to represent their characters whose names were already taken was always amazing to see. Plus it lead to a whole new bit of inspiration that is now lost. I lost all motivation behind my pets, which were the only real reason I was still here except a few friends. I won't be wasting money/time getting a subscription now that I won't be on as much, that is for sure.
If there was a way to opt your names out, that would be great...
I know what the news said, but I expect this to happen to usernames now too. Like Discord, Xbox, and so many other places I bet we will end up with ### linked to the names so everyone can be the same shade of special by next year.
