I've been here for over 15 years and I love this change. I might have more pets now I won't have to jump through hoops to find suitable names for them. People are also welcome to use my current pets names if they want to.
It's like... a relief to not have to stalk names anymore. But it's also made me realize how many of my names were "settled for" that I can now replace/rename in favor of more fitting names for characters.
...And then how many fanpets I wanted to make that I realize I don't have any TC ideas for when I do make them. o_o
I knew this day was coming for a while and that the names that I waited as long as 2 or 3 years to get would lose their "uniqueness", but the legacy name was honestly the best option to preserve a little of that 'novelty' and memory of; and the "waiting game" is no longer required to get future worthwhile names by.
This post is probably scattered cause it's late and I'm tired but the gist of it is GG, best of both worlds and no more long waits. xD
Now I gotta beef up my pet profiles so my pets will reign supreme over the same-names, MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahaha jk my artist's block is terrible I can't do anything
Hmm, the linking code doesn't quite work right yet. I'ts linking to someone else's Legacy pet instead of my shining light bringer.
I am so happy I bought a pet slot to get one of my cat's IRL name. I'm still eyeing up my pets to see if there are any I want to give up, but for now, I can't wait to get the extra income again to start getting slots. Loving the name changes coming with GA, that's awesome! I'm going to hold off on a sub until I'm not saving up to move to another country, but a lot of interest is buzzing in my head for now! Looking forward to see what the future holds in the pet community.
A bigger heads-up would've been nice, ngl. Rah specifically told me there would be a poll on the non-unique petnames thread in Suggestions to get a bigger feel for what the less vocal part of the userbase wants (nicknames vs. non-uniques). Doing it this way feels like your department heads have no idea what you're actually planning, Keith. Which doesn't really sit right. I get why you've pushed it, but again... It don't vibe. At least there will be a way to remove legacy names for folks who don't want the old ones around for whatever reason. I'm glad to see that being worked on!
Overall, I'm mostly glad the hee-hawing is done. The back-and-forth was tiring and I'm sure I'm not the only one who's felt exhausted by it more than they were by looking for petnames. Now I'm waiting for the new petpages to get implemented. 👀
The only thing I'm slightly salty about? This would've gone perfectly with a petslot increase (or two - sP and CSC). :P I saw so many neat names in the pound and I would like to give them a home pls.
ALSOALSO. Now more than ever, it'd be amazing if the pet's adopt page in the pound linked to the pet's profile. So it's easier to see if it has a legacy name before you go adopt it.
The "I worked excessively and unnecessarily hard for this so you should have to as well until the end of time" argument is an argument I never got.
Who cares if there will be hundreds of exact pet names? Is it going to hurt your pet any less? The only way that would be the case if you didn't work on literally any other facet of that pet.
I'm really excited to see what other users come up with using the pet names I have in particular. I'm excited for the general creativity as well!
I can offer one answer to this. I'd created a new pet with the name I wanted because at the time, it sounded as though we'd be forever stuck with the legacy names and I wanted a clean slate. Now that Bug's working on a means to purge legacy names from existing pets, I abandoned that new pet so I could rename one of my current ones instead. Just waiting for Bug to implement it before I go on a renaming spree ^^;
As I thought some more on this, if I have a silly idea I can just do it instead of passing on it because I didn't want to lose a name I'd probably want back. Back when my friend still played we'd go off creating silly stories. I so wanted to try and create a pet for them.
My pets may not have profiles but I like working/playing with them for me and I'm just so happy I can now change them as I wish that's so much easier. No more being stuck with a settled on name.
And now I can create my irl dog on here! I've wanted to for some time but I wanted his real name not his nickname or random word. Just have to figure out which pet name to change for this. :)

So as a GA user, you can already change their name?
Rah was completely involved in the decision making process, once I said that we just had to do it. She was particularly concerned that this would be an issue -- but I want to be really clear that I made the decision to just push forward with a plan, instead of involving more time of going back and forth.
Having a poll and more input could have only made the process longer, and worse. If we'd made a poll and the results were 52% keep unique names, what do you think we should have done? Knowing that this change sets us up for new users (who couldn't participate in the poll, obviously) and bringing back users who've left over the years. A poll would have been useful input as a single piece of information, but if the results were public and we did something that wasn't the majority, there'd be even more upset users. I'm all for (and you'll be seeing more things like the CW council in the future, to get critical user feedback) getting input from users, but at the end of the day the decision is mine and I have to make it. I've honestly been really bad at this over and years and waffle on things, and I'm trying to get better ;)
We had to just do it, and we came up with a plan that (I think) serves everyone involved, and sets us up for a great future. I'm not sure what more user input or a poll would have helped if this was the likely outcome.

My opinions on the change don't matter anymore, but I have to say I'm pretty salty that I now have to go through and fix 80+ custom profiles that are now messed up from the Original Name line. Luckily on most I can just hide it, but some now have alignment issues that I'll have to try and fix with 0 coding knowledge.

80 pets!!
We're adding a way to remove the legacy feature entirely from your pets, if that's what you'd like. Otherwise, the custom CSS is the best option :(
We're going to be doing a LOT of work on pet profiles soon (don't panic -- we'll have a way to keep your current ones :)) and will keep in mind being able to keep text blocks like that as something that you can toggle on/off.

yep! The new name link is still broken, but the name change went through fine. I leashed them, and that link goes to the correct profile, but the forum link does not.
Super excited about the way to remove the legacy bit officially (I need my custom emojis, being real discord has spoiled me, insert my fire elmo here).
Also pretty excited about the profile changes and what it might look like/offer. I'm rolling with a simplistic one currently but I may do a bit more with them once this happens. Exciting times and a great distraction from uh, everything else in the world right now.
@ Keith Thank you for the reply, I hate to be a whiner but I'm also not looking forward to the amount of time it will take to go through all those pages! A toggle-able feature would be wonderful in the future, as I'd like to keep the pets legacy for the easier links.
Speaking of easier links, just out of curiosity, would there ever be the potential of having a petid link scode like we have for users? (ie petid=1234 vs pet=user/name)

I accidentally pinged someone who blocked me. I didn’t know because I had totally forgotten and I don’t check my blocked users list frequently. I’m very sorry about that
I noticed that people have been creating non-unique names and dumping them in the pound. I have no idea why they do that
I did it once today, because I realized that adopting a pet that's already Spectrum and turning them into a Yaherra would end up less expensive than my original plan to go and buy a Spectrum Potion.
I have been inactive for a long time but its nice to see updates like this (:
I know that feel, man. I tend to waffle on about things too. :P But yeah, as I've said, I understand what it was done and why you did it this way. The back and forth on that suggestion topic between users from all viewpoints was exhausting, and I think everyone (staff & users!!) is just super glad that it was done quickly and the reception is overwhelmingly positive.
I only mentioned that poll because it came across as strange that it was first confirmed by a staff member, then dropped without even a whisper. 🤷 I think that addressing it in passing in that news post would've been good, given that it was a public, accessible bit of information. But eh. Nitpicking, hindsight and all that.
Either way, I'm glad that it's been discussed by both of you, and ngl, I'm also glad to see you dropping in and replying to people again! I really missed that kind of staff interaction regarding new features and WIPs. I know the world's gone craycray, but it's always appreciated to see familiar faces talking about stuff that's important to us on Subeta.
Now, about those old returning users... 👀 Newsletter time giving folks a poke about this, the new wardrobe updates & the new subscription options sometime in the near future, y/y?
