lol i admit i am like,, very pro-polls but i was also lowkey dreading how much that would drag it out. it was years of a lot of ??? and while i definitely can see why some users would've liked a heads-up, im just really glad the decision is made and rolled out. <3
I was initially not a fan of this change but then I realized like...there's literally no reason for me to be like that. I had a pet I had adopted a while back that I offloaded basically as soon as non-unique names were confirmed because...there was no reason for me to keep that name. I had no inspiration for it. I was just hoping some would come up. And honestly that's kind of ridiculous. It's really, really nice to not feel the need to do that anymore. And to rename my pets into things I actually like?? I had some placeholder names I wasn't a fan of and those are GONE now and it's fantastic?
Also I was finally able to adopt a pet with a name I had been watching for literal years and while I still doubt I'll actually do anything with it (the names themselves were definitely not the reason for my lack of pet inspiration) it's still so nice to have ;w;
y/y/y!!
We're wrapping up the bug fixes for the wardrobe (HAIR. WHY.) and making sure it has all of the features people expect (and some new ones!) and then we'll send out a newsletter with all of those updates :D
💖 ✨ 🤗
I had addressed this previously but I can see how my post wasn't clear enough! So let me clarify some things:
I hope that addresses your concerns. Thanks for reaching out about this.

@ Bug
Ahh thank you for the clarification! I probably missed your addressing of it before somehow (I thought I had read all responses, but sometimes i read something and misunderstand, or just outright miss a sentence). I didn't mean to frustrate you or make you feel attacked. As I said, my understanding was off kilter and I appreciate you responding to my own brain derp. :) Unfortunately my brain likes to latch onto things and goes all "railroad in one direction" and struggles to get it correct, and a rephrasing of the same darn thing a few times over is what it takes.

I'm not sure if you actually want an answer, or if you just wanted to vent (which is totally fine too!) but either way, I want to answer your concerns, in case it helps you feel better, and for anyone else who might have the same concerns:
This feature was tested before release, and the release went very smoothly. There were a few issues with displays and broken links immediately following release, but they were quickly fixed, and there were no glitches that modified pet data in unexpected ways.
So far, people have been renaming pets to other pets with the same name, and it's been working smoothly in all cases. There have already been hundreds of name changes with no issues. There's just no reason to believe that it is broken in any way.
In the worst case scenario that something like this does happen, we would immediately take the site down and restore data from our database backups. After the wardrobe items incident, we promised to keep more regular and reliable backups, and we have kept that promise. I just double-checked with five minutes ago that the backups we set up are still running, and they are.
The way non-unique names work just means that two pets can have the same name. At no point in the code does this involve any kind of delete operation. With the wardrobe, the feature we were working on was deleting items from a specific user's wardrobe, so there was an intentional delete operation that we just... messed up badly. But with the pets, we don't delete pets anywhere. This feature only modifies the pet's name, so if we did mess them one up badly too, the worst that might happen is that it changes your pet's name to something wrong. Again, in such a case where, say, every pet's name gets set to a blank name or something, we would take the site down and restore the data from backups.
Again, I understand if the trust in us has been broken and can't be restored for you. It's your right to decide that. But I hope the above points might help to reassure you. If you have other questions or concerns about any of this, feel free to ask and we'll do our best to address them. :)

No worries! I'm glad you reached out so I could clarify. My original wording was a little confusing honestly, because I just said the word "name", and pets kinda have two different types of names now, and then like "disallowed" was a little ambiguous too.

Overall, I like how non-unique pet names is putting the site back in motion. I understand there are many kinks that should have been ironed out sooner, and the staff is on top of it.
What could be improved again is communication. This is such a major change, but there is info missing, outdated, or scattered around.
Info in advance Some users suggested a poll. Or we could have a heads up to last minute name our pets before this system goes into effect if we want legacy pet names.
The news page needs to be accurate
Please keep all changes in the news posts The news posts got disabled and then enabled to fix lag which is understandable. But there are some links added such as this which got removed after reenabling, and it would be helpful to keep it in the news post. https://subeta.net/forums.php/read/911881/The-DL-on-the-Update-NonUnique-Pet-Names
Just something I have thought of.. is there anywhere on the site where legacy names are explained?
If someone who joins in like 1 year looks at a pet and is like "Why is this pet called Spot but has "Legacy name: AwesomePet" underneath?".
, thank you for taking the time to explain things addressing my concerns. I
Yes, thank you. I don't understand the desire to deny someone something that you're not even interested in. It reminds me of the Aesop's fable of The Dog in the Manger - a dog is sitting in a manger filled with hay. It can't eat it, but it barks and snarls at the oxen who could and refuses to move. Know what happens at the end of the fable? The owner gives it a smack and tells it to go away. If all you're doing is logging on once a year to hoard names that you won't even use, or if you wander in after 10 years and complain that things are different, don't let the door hit you on the way out.
I agree wholeheartedly with this, I was very happy when the forum posts were originally linked! Not everyone uses the forums, and might not know to look here for info.
We're working on help pages to explain the feature, but it is still once per pet, per account for the gold account perk.
💖 ✨ 🤗
It is still one free name change per pet, per month, if you have a gold account.
The part that was overlooked is if you abandoned/transferred the pet within that same month, whether or not someone else could also rename it. They originally made it pet-specific so that if you changed a pet's name and then abandoned them, another person would not be able to change their name within the same month.
Bug has now changed it so that it's per account for each pet, so ostensibly multiple people could change the same pet's name in the same month (but the same person could not).
I updated the thread to make that more clear. :) FAQ about Legacy Names/Non-Unique Pet Names
Probably for the same reason people were creating common pets with inactive/unused RW names and dumping them in the pound before this change. No idea who it was but you would often see a bunch of common pets (i.e. a bunch of demis or dillemas or kumi) with dictionary word names go floating through the pound before the name changes.
At least now those names won't be gummed up for at least a year for people who actually wanted to use them.
I really like this change! I think it will increase my creativity and involvement in my pet's stories if I ever get around to finishing them. :)
Unfortunately, they've decided not to implement that. :(
Show legacy names in the adoption center details
OTOH I think it's better if you don't think of legacy names as their "real" names. The names they have are their "real" names. The legacy names are just their "former" names.
It's like the difference between having a pet named "Prince" and a pet named "Artist" (formerly known as Prince). [sup](That's mostly a tongue-in-cheek example and shouldn't be taken as absolutely analogous.)[/sup]
Curses. Foiled again.
I thought I'd nabbed a name of an original character yesterday, except I'd been bamboozled - as soon as I went on their profile, the Legacy name (a string of real words) stared up at me in bold letters and blew a raspberry in my face. So I abandoned the pet at once and felt mighty foolish. Then I retired to my fainting couch with a mighty fit of the vapours.
cackles manically the names are all mine at last
when i first saw the news i was ... emotional? i quickly realised that the only thing keeping me logging in for the last two years was my pet names.
i felt at first that that was what was keeping me coming back, those coveted pet names, so what now? i realise now that whilst i was coming back, i wasn't actively interacting with my pets or the site. the freedom to name our pets as we please should encourage creativity across the site and reinvigorate the players who prioritise pets (of which there are many!)
i actually just renamed a bunch of my pets and i'm loving the new found freedom -- one name change EVERY MONTH? i bought a gold account for the first time in like 3 years lol
this is a really well needed change and should encourage old, current and new users alike. thank u for doing this!
i especially appreciate the comments made by and your decision making -- it's actually great to see you taking control and making really solid decisions. the work you're doing with is bringing the site a new lease of life.
honestly we just need new pet profiles rolling out asap and i'm convinced that i (and many others) could become active once again.
