You're the best, really. Thank you for fixing that, it's late and it gave me a moment of "oh no".

I'd just like to second what I commented in the news post with one suggestion/question.

What happens if we create a new pet now, with a name that never existed previously? Could that still get a legacy name status, as it would be the first pet to ever exist with that name? I found a few free names (not inactive) that I've been sitting on for awhile and didn't get around to creating, but if I'd known this change was going to take place, I definitely would have made them all so that they could get the legacy name status. As far as I'm understanding it, the legacy name status will just apply to pets that were created before this change today?

It's not really a huge deal, but it would be a nice touch if pets could still get the legacy names if they are the very first to be created with it!

I just changed so many names that I was just hanging onto because I was afraid to lose good RNs/RWs and i feel so... free LMAO

This change also just gave me a burst of inspiration to create profiles that I haven't had in forever u

I was in the same boat with hoarding names for the sake of "what if I eventually want to use this?" and was a massive part of why I never cleared out my pets. :c but now, instead of over 70, I've driven my numbers down by a bit and also have the more "expensive" colored pets up for adoption in the forums! it'll take time to clean up, figure out which ones to keep and rename, or let them go to others who might want them for any given reason.

this whole summer I've been horribly depressed and void of motivation but having this updated totally boosted me up. maybe didn't boost me out of an art block LMAO but definitely drives me to bring characters over.

people have said things like "well this isn't toyhouse" - like you're right, it isn't. but toyhouse is such a different vibe than subeta. I much prefer coding and editing over here, along with filling treasure chests!!!, and everything you want on your pet can be upfront in one spot. toyhouse is a lot more... complex? when it comes to profiles over there. not to mention you have to be premium to use CSS which is a little silly in my opinion.

that said, though...

It matters so much to me because he's my sona and he helped me solidify my own identity - including coming to terms and coping with my gender dysphoria, being transgender, and not being able to transition via hormones - to the point I took his name for myself irl please my whole chest is warm and I am legit crying and I'M SORRY I JUST LOVE HIM SO MUCH??????????

Yes, only pets created prior to this change will have legacy names, and this will not be changed. This is because the purpose of a legacy name is to honor the potential time, effort, and resources spent in obtaining those names when they were still unique and thus could be quite difficult to get.

This change is amazing; thank you so much! Most of my pets are fanpets for characters from games/anime I like, but since pretty much all of their canon names were already taken, I had to resort to coming up with other names for them. But not anymore! I’m so excited to finally have my pets with their proper names. ;o;

I have a few names that I was hanging onto because “what if I want it later?!”, so it’s also really nice that I can just let them go now. I don’t have to feel bad about holding onto names that other people might want more than me, and I don’t have to worry about letting a name go and then wishing I had it back. It’s such a weight off my mind, haha.

As proud as I was of having the only pet with a certain name on the site (ie. the only Homura or Ashes), I like this so much more. My newfound freedom outweighs that sense of pride. (‘:

I've been playing subeta ever since the very first version went down in the early 2000s & we had to wait... what? 2 years or so for this current version to start up? (& didn't even realize it had until I happened to check one fated December day... heh.) I'm very happy that this happened~ I enjoy this game and want it to keep on going & people need to want to play it for that to happen.

Story time: A person I know stopped playing straight up because they lost some rather important OCs names to other players (one of which has remained a coded profile placeholder for one of their OCs for... 5+ years now? they saw that fun word, just had to have it, & then did absolutely nothing with it? uff.) These were pets with art, stories, properly coded profiles, you name it. I don't know if they'll come back or not but I know they can't be the only one who stopped playing due to life getting in the way.

Plus, I'm happy that the same people who kept looking up some of my pets can now FINALLY have those names for themselves, instead of their never-going-to-be-granted-wish of my no longer playing. Enjoy your OCs, Florida player. ha. &, I'm happy that I can rename my very first guy just their name, without the class modifier at the end~ After the Harry Potter books way too many people became enamored with the name Sirius & I'm just the idiot who likes space & had been naming their digital companions after stars for an eternity now. haha. It's not a big deal, but it's better than my having to wait for someone else to just stop logging in long enough to get it.

Literally, my only regret about all of this is not having renamed the... ~10 rejected old pets I have sitting around with crappy names who are now stuck with that as their legacy names. Like, I would have paid to make it not be that way. I've already paid to rename... 33 or so pets for the hell of it. :p

Put off doing a ticket about getting back my csc for my year long GA (didn't really need it right now anyway & thought I'd leave the space for people who did need it to get sorted first.) & planned on getting that worked out during the first week of August (since I'd set the time aside for it) and renaming all these dudes & turning them into the blobs I don't have. I still will, but it is horrible that a tiny bit of them will always be things like "CreamCow" & "JDepp"

My only question is, which name do we have to display on the pet profile? If a pet has a legacy name and I give it a new name, which one do I have to have displayed on the profile?

Other than that I love the change because this means that my tribute pets can finally be called what they were meant to be called ❤️

Hm... this is very nice and all, but honestly I don't really care too much? I mean, I'm glad I can now name my pets anything I want, but my starter pet has the one name I really, really want, and that's good enough for me, for now at least. Pet shown below:

Storm That Lights The Sky There are others I've named that also have nice names as well. If I were to ever get another pet to name it something specific and it was taken, I'd be sad, so congratulation Subeta for finally making this change a reality! <3

I'm weirdly a little disappointed because I enjoyed trying to think of names that weren't already taken, and I think it caused people to get more creative than they might otherwise be, but at the end of the day it seems like it's making a lot of people happy, and that's more important. And I have some pets that've been past due for a renaming for a while; maybe I'll feel inspired now. Plus no one's stopping me from searching for unique names if I really want, I guess.

I just wish newly created original names also gained a legacy title or some sort of indication they were the original name holder. Other than that I am pretty ok with things.

Well, I would have liked to have read the comments in the news section because I would have liked to have seen people who are as unhappy about this as me, but it seems those comments are gone. So no, I'm not happy about this at all. Unique pet names was one of my favorite parts of Subeta. Oh well I guess...

I never supported this. I enjoyed finding names that weren't taken or finding other alternatives. I'm pretty happy with the names I have, especially my legacy names. There were tons of names that were not in use. I came across them daily.

I feel the non-unique change just gives people the option to be less creative and less expensive. I fought through battle and lag for 15 years to get names I liked and wanted. Now other people can just go ahead and create a name that I've had for 15 years or less that was unique and special to me. If I missed a name in a clearing? Oh well. I'll keep checking back to see if the account becomes inactive. If I missed a name, it wasn't the end of the world. Was I disheartened? Yes, but I was able to move on and find something else I really loved.

There's going to be over 100 Olivers, 200 Maries etc (I don't get the point of having the ability to create the same name over and over). I much preferred the unique name system. I've lost so much interest in this site, that I've already started a mini purge.

In my honest opinion, having a non-unique name system isn't going to make someone stay. I'm more encouraged than ever to finally call it quits This is just how I feel. Please don't shoot me down. Thanks.

¯(ツ)

Come and be salty with me. I loved the unique naming system and now everything I worked for, is meaningless. This just drives me away even more now.

THIS. There are tons of untaken names. For example: strengthening. That name is free. Everything created after today doesn't count and that's kind of a PO.

You don't have to display the legacy name; we even provided code in the news post that you can use to hide it. :) The rules around displaying a pet's actual name are the same.

I expressed this on the news comments but I need to say it again: it is the BEST update since I started playing Subeta and I am very happy with this because it is a feature I always wanted for Subeta since other sites I play also use this system.

This surely will make me create more pets since the taken ones on the previous system was most desired ones for me and everything I could do is pray to the owner stop playing for 1 year.

I honestly don't mind this change. It was and still will be fun to come up with names that aren't used. Just because people can call their pet whatever they want doesn't take that away. I have nicknames for my pets now.

edited - i think my questions was answered. lol

It's frustrating that with comments being disabled, all of the comments on the news post were also removed as well. Reiterating my previous comments, though, I'm not particularly happy with how this has been handled. I'm not overly surprised since I think I sort of expected this would be the way the site would eventually go when individual users could have like 30+ pets, but considering it was a core part of the site I think it could have been done a lot more clearly... as well as giving people more forewarning so they could get things in order pre-change, such as swapping names if they were planning to and wanted to have a legacy name on x pet, delaying using csc to rename a pet for the change, and so on.

Quote

Hopefully this will be a good decision for the longevity of the site.</p>
<p>That said, I am horribly disappointed with how staff had handled this change in regards to communication. This is a big change and for a year and a half, we had very little communication with staff other than few scattered posts about it (some not even on the Non-Unique Pet Names discussion on forums...), an update not terribly long ago about a proposed nickname system and promise for a poll to be held to see the userbase&;s options on it (especially since not everyone is going to be social, especially on something that is frankly on a very outdated platform), and we never even got the promised poll.</p>
<p>I guess the legacy pet names is at least something (especially since that still gives a &quot;point&quot; to adopt out pets for people who may wish to do so), but for such a big part of the website, I had hoped for far better communication and I am really disappointed how this was ultimately handled in that respect.</p>
<p>On the bright side, at least hopefully this will mean that people will be a lot less hostile and entitled to other people&;s pets. I dealt with a lot of harassment over my pet names some years ago, so hopefully this will eliminate that kind of impact on the userbase and help create a more positive environment.

On the last point of my original comment, I really hope this helps the pet-interested side of the userbase be able to engage more freely, since the entitlement issues some users had about other people's pets were beyond frustrating, for whether or not they "deserved" to have the things they had - I dealt with a lot of harassment some years back (especially in the form of anonymous hate via giftboxes) due to some desirable pet names I had, which really impacted my drive to work on my pets when combined with my depression and real life issues - hopefully with the change that will no longer be a factor that could affect other users moving forward.

So, considering that some people, what, only a few weeks ago, deleted some items from their wardrobes on their personal accounts and it literally SUCKED THE ITEMS OUT OF MY ACCOUNT and deleted them (as well as others), what guarantee do I have that someone who now takes one of my pet names and then abandons their pet, that MY pet won't also be sucked out of my account, since they have the same name now? My pet was previously 'safe' and now it won't be??

This move is gonna be great for attracting new users. The old system felt so elitist (old users were more likely to have "good" petnames; inactive users would only log into their accounts to hoard "good" names). Petsites are often used to host people's OCs, so why limit their creativity just because someone who got there first also has a character with the same name? It was lovely to see so many people in the news comments celebrating their name changes! I'm also happy for those who have memorial pets and were previously unable to name them after the person/animal. I think of it this way: just because someone's already named their dog Bingo doesn't mean you can never name a pet Bingo ever again.

Also, after this change, I am now even more excited to invent unique, fantasy names for my pets. The best way to guarantee you're one-of-a-kind is to get really creative with it!
