Keith has already said they're not changing usernames to non-unique.
I can honestly say I have 0 faith in that statement at this point.

initially i was on the fence about this -- i had invested so much time and money on obtaining pet names, i was scared of feeling regret -- but holy hell, my fears have been assuaged. i've been having the time of my freaking life shedding these old names that i'd only kept around for fear of letting go. i was always so anxious, waiting for that coveted inspiration to strike me (it never did), and that anxiousness held me back.
BUT NOT ANYMORE
hakuna matata, baby, and i can't wait to subscribe to the site and continue down this path of unfettered creation!! thank you, staff!!

I tried the link and it took me to the legacy Zoey!
try [pet=(user)/(pet)]! :) for example, [pet not found] becomes
Opting names out? Lol It would be the same as before and just incite people into hoarding their pets' names for no reason other than to be petty about this change. So what if a bunch of pets have the same name? Each pet belongs to a different user with a different concept/character/etc. on that pet. Legacy names enable the person who had that pet first to remember that they did, and for other people to see too should said user wish to have it on display.
This change gives people a chance to make the pets and characters they genuinely want.
I'm just not a fan and I don't have to be. I think it takes a lot of the creativity out of it and makes it so everything ends up being the same. Not everyone who doesn't like this is a name hoarder, so that isn't really an excuse. I don't really see it as being "petty" because I don't want my names shared with other people when I had to put work into getting them (adoption, creation, or for the very rare few, watching to catch them on their purge date) and making them what I wanted them to be. Sorry if I don't want to see 1000 of the same named pet.

Actually when you click on her it sends you to 's pet.
There's something wrong with the linkage.
I just spent 5 hours filling up two pets' TCs because I'm no longer limited in my ideas by having to "settle" on names~ what an awesome feeling!
That's one of my next goals too! I've always had TC ideas but nowhere to put them, and now I can start building a character, including their name, around TCs!
Yeah it's weird cuz it shows the right picture, but it goes to the wrong pet.
Someone should probably notify that the short links aren't directing to the right place. :)
TCs are such a great place to start for a character, to get their aesthetic going. Also it's a great excuse to look through the beautiful site art! Personally I didn't realize how much I'd benefit from being able to "try on" names, but it's so refreshing not having to worry about future regrets. It surprisingly stunts creativity a whole lot to have the "wrong" name on a character; it's lovely to see so many other people inspired by the new freedom :3
Plus the whole not having to worry about the name being taken bit. I keep seeing people mention how there will be "thousands" of one name but I kinda think that for the most part people are still going to want to have something special. And even if we get 200 Steves, it's really not that different from having Steve, Stephen, Steven, Phteven, and .Steve like we would have had in the old system.
In other words, people's creativity and desires aren't going to change, but they now have new outlets for them if they're willing to use them. :)
lol, Stephen is my boyfriend's name so that's a hilarious example. But yeah, exactly--people who want creative names can continue coming up with them. If anything the change has made me more excited to make up fantasy names. But having a monopoly on the name Steve is silly. And sometimes I just wanna name a pet a real word without having to find some obscure synonym that doesn't really make sense in context XD
i'm just saying i want to see EVERYBODY'S Damians. I can guarantee you they are all better than the loser who's sat on my account for 100 years

that's exactly what I was looking for, thank you!
Although the link you posted under the coding takes me to the legacy pet owned by rather than the one you own....

There's a thread in the bug forum about the link issue. is aware, but there's a few other issues (like the Subeta search) higher up on the to-do list at the moment. We should have our perfect newly named pet's links up and running soon. For now I'm using the url your pet's name
Lucifer
thanks - I hadn't got as far as the bug forum this morning (need my morning mug of tea before my brain is awake enough to do much on here!) :)

i know i already expressed how happy i am with this change in the news post but i wanted to again just say how fucking happy this makes me feel
because it's like?? a pet site stops being fun if i have to feel like i can't adopt out any pet because 'oh no what if i regret it' or feeling like i have to work on pets because otherwise i'm 'wasting' a name q v q and now there's no reason for ppl to be dicks to each other over who """"deserves"""" names (as if oc creators should have a monopoly over good names??) and just hnn i'm so happy to be able to make oc's on this site and not go thru the grief of scouring thesauruses to find a rw that maybe almost kind of fits (。・ω・。)ノ♡
and can i also just say

I really wish there had been a poll on this. I would love to know what percentage of the user base supported, or not, this happening. A lot of people don't like posting on the forums and I feel their voices may not have been heard.
I'm not a fan of the change and I feel like if I knew I was in a massive minority then maybe I could accept it in my heart more.
I think and said all my thoughts and no matter how much I'm not keen on the change it's not enough to make me leave.
