The newer art is better all around in execution but a lot of the personality is lost with the pose change from the old one. If we could get a new illustration similar to the original with posing but definitely have the better technique I think it'd be perfect.

Overall I like most of the new one. The shading is lovely and I like the new wings. But something about the face doesn't seem to give the Montre the same feel. Maybe it's the shape? I like more of the 'pointiness' in the fluff at his cheeks, myself. The new one seems so thin in that respect. And even though the eyes are pretty much the same, I think they look better on the fuller face. I miss the little curve at the tip of the muzzle as well.

I like the angle of the original montre more, and also how the front shoulder looks more raised. I would like to see more of that slanted posture and maybe have the tail in a more raised position than the revamp. The revamp has a chubbier belly that I don’t like as much. I think the wings should have a more emphasized top crest. And I would like to see bigger or wider paws.

It looks much better than the old one, but there are a few things that concern me. Something with the muzzle seems off, it's like it's slanted a bit too far down maybe. The ears, while cute, I think would look better slimmed down a bit like the old one and come down to be more pointed. The wings bother me a bit too, it's like there isn't enough shading to them or something. They don't seem, to me anyway, like they would be able to fold and tuck up against the body, granted the old ones didn't either, but maybe I'm seeing it wrong.

Things I love: How fluffy it is oh my gosh super fluffy! Love the pose as a whole. The more cream-colour of the underbelly and chest is adorable and compliments the main base colour of the fur. Love how fluffy that tail is!

All in all: As a Montre owner I wouldn't be upset about this revamp, especially if a few things were tweaked.

I really like the revamp but I just think that the muzzle needs a little more shape to it and that the ears seem pulled back, the way a dog or cat brings its ears to its head when it feels threatened.

i like it a lot BUT… there is something about the muzzle that bugs me… i think the "flatness" of it (i.e. the line from the nose to where the muzzle connects to the skull is nearly a straight line) makes the eyes look a little to close together. i would suggest pulling the slope of the muzzle in just a teeny bit, and setting the eyes a little farther apart. other than that, i love it—those wings are gorgeous ✧ω✧

There's something off about the face, but I'm not experienced enough with any kind of animal anatomy to be able to place it. At first I thought maybe the head was too big, but in retrospect it's just the face. Sorry I'm not much help :/ Don't know why I bothered to comment really.

However, the wings look amazing and the pose is wonderful!

I love the wings in the revamp! Huge improvement over the old one -- the little details in the feathers are really lovely, and the way the wings are positioned in relation to the body is lovely; however, other than the wings I still prefer the original. The new pose loses quite a lot of personality, sitting straight-backed and stoic with more of a haughty look, as opposed to the original's somewhat hunched, suspicious look. The old pose also has more fluidity than the new one, which looks much stiffer to me.

Ooh, this one has musculature! I like!

I agree with on the fur tufts, though.

Something about the muzzle doesn't seem right, even though it looks the same as the old pose. Like it seems like it should be angled up more.

The revamp looks great, it is an improvement! Just the muzzle seems off.

Is the wing coming out of a weird spot on the new one...or is it just me?

Note: I happen to have this open on a tiiiiny screen right now

Also the nose, not that I can really tell, but it doesn't look like its where a nose should be --too far down the snout

new look is overall good, but it seems to me that at the angle it's holding its head, the snout should point more outward rather than the downward slope it has now.

haven't read the thread yet, apologies if i'm repeating a common sentiment

I really like it, but there's something about the head positioning that's bothering me? It feels like it's been moved too far back/up. Also I think I liked the ears more when they were less straight up, but that's nit picking at this point. More actual commentary now that I thought about it: Muzzle does feel like it's melting or something? The nose is either too small, too far down, or both? This sort of goes with the above. Okay I messed with it apperently:

Everyone else has p much nailed my opinions on this but I've been encouraged to post anyway so:

  • Something is def wonky with the face and posture, and even the slight adjustment to lifting its chin up improves the posture a bit.
  • The tangent with the back wing connecting makes the eye focus too much in that spot instead of naturally allowing one's gaze to circle around the whole picture's silhouette.
  • Shading and foreground wing are nice.
  • Pose is pretty boring and similar to other older artwork.
  • Overall feel is a threatened animal, esp with the ears tilted back the way they are.

I think it's a step in the right direction but it's just not there yet.

Hopefully all the commentary is taken into consideration, like with the ontra revamp, which turned out pretty swell after that imo.

Thanks for showing us this preview and letting us voice our thoughts!

Wow, this filled up with replies fast. lol.

I drew this up for what I can see right off hand. The nose is too flat, the head is too far back and just pulled back and up too much so it looks stiff. The tail is pinched at the top so it looks somewhat like it's made of rubber rather than bone like it should be. Also, it appears as though you've given him a pot gut! That should be slimmed up a bit, that'd be better. I'm not a fan of giving pets a huge gut for no reason... and the toes bother me as well, since they're not structured, they'er too cartoony. The original pose is much more relaxed and the remake would be nice to be more relaxed too. I only sketched over the revamp and didn't change the pose, but I fixed the neck, the back, the placement of the legs- since the elbow is up too high too. The ears are a oddly placed as well as the cheeks... so hopefully this gives some kind of helpful critique. The shading is slightly weird, it seems more detailed on the bottom and then the head hardly has any.

The wings are great tho, very nicely shaped. I love how you can finally see the tail puff, that's nice too and the shading is lovely on that as well- and the jewelry is good as well.

Ugh, I accidentally posted this on the news post instead of here, I deeply apologize for that! ;u;7 Here's a repost.

While I absolutely love the new Montre and its obvious fixes to the original anatomy, there's one part that really bothers me. And that's the distinct lack of a nose bridge.

First of all, I love the edited pose, I love the shading. I also love how fluffy the wings are. But the glaring issue of the nose bridge really distracts from the entire composition as a whole. It's like a grammatical error in the middle of a paragraph in a book; it SERIOUSLY distracts from the narrative and people can't help but look back at that mistake and think "How could the editors miss this?".

Taking Subeta's other loveable canine pet, the Kumos as an example, it obviously has a nose bridge where the skull dips down:

Because that's what canidae skulls do: (skull from skullsite.co.uk)

Honestly, it's just a small edit that would make a whole lot of difference! Here's a botched edit because I'm tired and I really need to shower and go to bed, lol.

I like the old pose, with the legs looser and head cocked to one side. The new one looks like it's posed for a formal photograph while the old one looks like it's just relaxing. The new art is great, but the pose needs to be relaxed or the whole character of the Montre changes, and I've always seen the Montre as somewhat playful.

The shading and lineary is definitely much better in comparison to the current art, he looks like he fits the site a lot more. I also like the detail to his feathers and tail and his overall body. The only things bothering me are the face - it seems to big compared to the current art, I think it would look better with a slimmer face and snout. I also think the chest is just a bit too puffed out for my liking, the montre is quite slim in the current art and I think the change from slim to gaining a gut and some chub is a bit of a difference. I definitely love the new art, just a few niggly bits for my liking :) Great work on the revamp though, definitely looks much better overall!
