I like the new one but the face around the nose looks like his face is stuffed with food or swollen like it got stung by bees.
Bathory is hungry for MORE MORE I SAY. - If you think you are unattractive just remember you look like your ancestors, and hey all of them got laid-
The new one looks fantastic! I love the updated shading and the wings especially look so much better. I think the pose looks a bit stiff compared to the old one though. The old one has more of a curved back, as though it's hunching over, which makes it look more shifty/mysterious. Whereas the new one has a very straight back. I think if the head were to be lowered and the shoulders hunched over a bit, that would bring back the character that the old one had.
Edit: Also I don't see much of a problem with the face, honestly. Montres always reminded me of the Tibetan Sand Fox. They have that same kinda blocky face and small, squinty eyes.
I prefer the one on the left. The legs, both front and back on the one on the right are totally off. Too stiff and without contour. I dont like the fact that his tail looks as if its in his ear, either.
The wings on the one on the left are way better too.
Sorry. Not to be putting any artist down with my criticism- I understand art is very time consuming. Great try!!

Okay, the positive: huge improvement on the shading and anatomy. That front wing is excellent. All around a positive change!
Things I'd like to see addressed:
I definitely think it's a vast improvement over the old one! If I may make a suggestion though, I think it would look better if the head was pushed forward a bit and if the snout wasn't tilted so far down. I made a quick example, with the original one the left and my suggestion on the right:

Noticing now that I kinda screwed up the back and shoulder in mine, but hopefully it shows what I mean.
I think the muzzle should be pointier to capture the spirit of the original montre.
Also the facial anatomy in general is just a bit wonk? Something about the jaw line and the angle of the eyes is just off.
I love the revamp! Great job! <3
I agree with the snout being maybe just a bit too straight.
I like the pose and shape of the head of the old one and the wings and tail of the new one. Maybe find a way to mash those together? And keep the old eyebrows?
While I love the added details, and definitely the differences in the wings and tail, I prefer the older version for face shape and pose. The elongated face, with the ears closer together, takes away from what I love so much about their design in the first place. This is my favorite pet on the site, and I will keep the species, regardless, but I do feel it could use a little tweaking, still.

The artwork on the revamp is obviously much better -- especially those wings! But, the original had more character. The slouching sit and the shifty eyes got across that the Montres are supposed to be melancholy. Maybe new style, old pose would be better. More or less what I thought about the proposed Manchu, honestly.

I agree with others about tweaking the face shape! I also feel like the ears should be a little farther forward/pointing outward, as opposed to pointing back like that. I'd also like to see the eyes look a little bigger.
Wonderful revamp though, I'd honestly be fine with this going through because the montre deserves so much better than the common poses it currently has, LOL.
Just a few very minor tweaks and it will be perfect. Been awaiting this one for a LONG time, says the dork with four montres :D
i like most of it. i do not like the bigger muzzle, it looks boxy and completely unnatural. i picture the montre as more of a fox, so i think it should have a slender muzzle, or at least more slender and natural looking than the current revamp. i also agree that i preferred the larger tail ornaments, and i think the wings might look better a little smaller as well. not much, just a little.
i also agree that the old one looked more sneaky and a lot of the potions make the montre look kind of sassy and the new one has like no expression... it's like a statue. i would prefer to see it look a little more crafty and sly than completely blank and stoic
I think the body is a nice improvement, but the head and face are very flat and the head itself is too big for the body.
More shading to show the planes of the facial structure and a less straight/downward angled muzzle would improve it drastically. I agree with some previous posters that it looks kind of like a bull terrier. x:
I like:
The new wings The new legs and paws The new tail The new overall art style
I DISlike:
The new ears (the old one's pointier and spread-out look appealed more) The new eyes (too small and too slanty-inwards, giving him a smush-face look*) The new snout (too rounded and... weird, it looks like an old cartoon where a dog gets his face smashed in something, and then his nose droops out all weird and distended, I tried to find an image example but couldn't) The new tailfeathers (I just like those wispy old ones)
*This is the reason I instantly ditched my Hydrus Montre and changed him to something else when the revamp came out a few months ago. His new eyes just make him look like he's confused... and kinda stupid. The old eyes/face had such better character. Others have expressed this too, and I think if you fixed the face then the revamp would lean a lot more in the new one's favor.
The new art looks great! I really like the extra shading and slightly warmer colors.
It seems to have a little bit less of that lanky look to it, and I don't know if that was intentional or not. I would kind of miss it. Maybe if the chest poof was a little less, the wings were a little smaller, and the ears splayed more out to the sides?
So yeah, the new art is much better, but I hope you can still make it stick to that lanky, thin look.
I agree that the art/proportions are definitely better (and it looks fantastic!). But the new one looks almost too bulky compared to the original? Especially in the chest. Or perhaps it's more in the posinng; the original Montre looked more hunched and defensive. I think a lot of the character of the old Montre is because it was very slim and projected wariness. On the other hand, I really like the flatness of the new muzzle. I think it adds more character to the face!
SOMEONE GIVE BACKFIRE AN AWARD ;-; /emotional clapping

Yessss! maybe even a little more forward. I also liked how expressive the original face was.
I'm going to agree with some of the others and say I'm not too into the muzzle. It looks like the muzzle is pointed downwards even though the rest of the face isn't. I feel similarly about the Hydrus Montre revamp.
I see now looking at them side by side that the Montre muzzle always kind of pointed downwards, not straight out like the Kumos, but I feel like it's pushed just a bit too far contrary to the rest of the head. The original Montre's head looks like it's tilted more, making the downward pointing muzzle fit better. The new one's ears and face shape suggest that the muzzle is at a very odd angle compared to the head.
ETA: Love the tail and paws! Neutral on the wings, really.
