I am in groups to be notified of things. To be notified of things happening one time. To be pinged when the token shop restocks, to be pinged by siteupdate when something important happens, to be pinged when it's time to dig at coda caves, to be pinged when new wearables come out, to be pinged by Speiro's deadlines when thing are about to expire.
I am not in a cult because I don't care about cults. And you can't make me care. Adding cult things to groups that have nothing to do with cult stuff isn't going to make me care. What about when a plot happens on here and someone makes a ping group about it to ping when a new step comes out? I guess that's not going to happen anymore, huh?
Group pings really didn't need to be cults, because that's never what I saw them as.
My guess is he can&;t fix the cult coding so as usual, he is going to take the easy way out rather than do what would be best for the players. xD
Ah, right. It's the subeta way! The forum groups weren't broken before, let's make sure they are now!
Except for pinging which is broken because forum groups have existed without limits :).
Which worked fine until you re-did the forums :)

i think he was using this as an example - the "ping friends" feature was implemented so people could use that instead of ping groups that were just their friends. he plans to do something similar for people who are interested in certain threads. but when you think about it: "hmmm, how can i reach multiple users who i want to tell one thing without them being on my friends list… oh, i know! how about a ping group!" so… he wants to make something to replace gorups… that has the same exact functionality as a group… :|
i was about to post the same thing. i remember pre-forum revamp, ping groups worked perfectly.

But hey, spend more money on our site!

Which worked fine until you re-did the forums :) It would probably work fine now if they had actually tested the coding hahahaha you can't have special characters in forum titles (like an apostrophe ffs) if you want the ping to go through. Seriously, what the fuck.
But it's really cute how you try to blame the lack of testing of the new forum on too many ping groups.
I'm so done with this site.
Of all the ideas that were being pushed through, putting a limit on ping groups is the most ridiculous I've heard 😞 I love getting my pings, what do I have to do with my time if I get less pings during the day...
I guess people will have to subscribe to threads now instead of joining ping groups. I imagine that will be a nightmare for cw threads when dozens of people will post to claim and you log in the next day to see an obscene amount of posts. Unless..... it only pings to the first new post? Because then, that might be a nice alternative to this ping group limit dilemma. ;O
I'd rather the cult part of the ping groups be removed if it means upping the group limit. I never got why a cult couldn't just use the forums to create a thread and chat there? Get that post count up while possibly raking in those elusive forum tickets? It's a win-win situation.
It means break things more than they already are, right?

What I mean is for threads like, say a CW thread. You subscribe to it but set it so that only the creator of the board can ping you there. That gets rid of the use of half of the CW forum groups.

I thought subscription pings weren't working correctly? I can only seem to get one ping using the subscribe feature until I delete said ping. Is that supposed to happen?
Anyway, for the purposes of this topic. The limit, which was the point that a lot of people were making, has been removed for now until other options are explored.
All of the existing features of forum groups are present in the revamped version. There will be a site update thread when more changes are made.

keith mentioned somewhere in this thread that that was his ultimate endgoal - to have something that is kind of like a thread-specific ping group, without the group part. so kinda like subscribing, but kinda not.
i think it's a good idea, but i think that subeta tends to get ahead of its self in what it can accomplish, and instead sends out half-assed, out of touch revamps that they think the userbase will like but really they don't actually know what people do on subeta.
If anything, I think forum groups and "group" pings should be two separate entities. For instance, I don't have many friends and I know a lot of people don't add just anyone to be friends, so it's not like you can just ping friends and everyone who is interested will get notified, and I get a lot of pings for things like subq restocks, Token shop restocks, freestuff, buycellcw, announcements, updates, etc.. The only groups I really care to be part of are those for CW pings that only allow people in the group to be able to slot, etc.. So why can't these be separate? So you can make a group that only those people receive pings for x pings, whereas you can make a way to subscribe to certain pings without actually being in those groups. I typically have to subscribe to a thread if I want updates from it because sometimes I don't get the pings at all, but if there was a way to simply subscribe to a ping with no limit, but groups did have limit, then maybe that would work better?
Granted, I don't know how much weight this would be on the servers and how this would be possible to make as I am not a programmer, but just like we get updates when there is new news, can't there be a way for us to keep updated on pings without being in the group?
I guess the easiest way to describe this is like facebook, you can be someone's friend or you can simply follow/subscribe to them, if you can figure out a way to make the two things separate then wouldn't that make everyone happy? Or like I can subscribe to threads, why can't I subscribe to certain pings but not actually be in the group?
AAAH. Gotcha. xD I also saw Keith's explanation on the top of this page and it makes sense to me. I mean I don't know if this saves server space or what, but if it can actually work, that would be great for cw groups. Hustler or token shop pings... not at all lol. Sometimes it feels like the newer stuff is more complex than it should be, you know? |D
i agree, it would be TOTALLY useless for subq, hustler, etc. i think the plan might be to re-instate the limit on groups and combine that with the subscribing-but-not feature. that way, CWs and other threads like that which i'm sure make up at LEAST half, if not more, of forum groups can essentially be deleted, leaving more room for things that wouldn't benefit from that new feature.
that would work just fine for me, but time will tell - i'm not someone who really fears change, but it would be nice if more research and testing was done and more thought was given into how people use the site before features like this are implemented ;(
That works for some, but not the hustler/goodhustle groups, token shop, etc. Those won't be affected at all though, will they?
It's just not happening. I have had forums in my ping group since the first day I saw them like two or three weeks ago. Here's what I mean.
First, here's what it looks like at the bottom of the main forums (the stuff goes over it but there's still no link, so it's not really a problem) [click for bigger]

Then here's proof that I actually HAVE forums (from the group page) [click for bigger]

Then, here's proof that I have threads in the forums (one only has one in it, so I thought it might need multiples to show up and made test threads). [click bigger you get it]

None of it shows up at the bottom of the main forums, nor do the threads show up on the group page (where the note about coming soon is)
I can understand limits once there are things in place like 'ping friends of ___', 'ping those interested in subq restocks / TS restocks / etc', but slapping a limit of fifteen down before actually implementing these changes will only provoke... well, the exact response you see here. I'm in thirty forum groups, and I'm not even an active user. Granted, I could probably cull out maybe five or so, but that's still too many.
As a point of interest, here's how my groups break down:
Some were harder to categorize so I just left them out. Common interest groups and CW groups, mostly. If we're having a limit imposed eventually, how many of these groups will still count as "forum groups" in the way that we know them now? I don't like having to pick and choose all that much.
