Originally this post was for one item that I noticed, but others suggested we should have a single thread to compile items that have names or descriptions that could use an update. I agree and it should also make it easier on any staff members who are in charge of this kind of thing.

So if you notice anything hurtful or maybe something that seems outdated or misleading, post it here and I'll add it! If you're on the fence about it, I can still add it. It's not my job to debate or decide about whether something gets changed.

Right now I'm categorizing by what needs to be changed; Item Name, Item Description, and Item & Description. I'll add another category if an item doesn't suit one of those.

I don't intend any of this as a criticism of any staff members as people, or how they do their job. This post is to help match the site with how kind and positive it is now, as humor from when a lot of these items were made was a lot meaner (and unfortunately just kind of accepted as normal by the majority of people, myself included).

Also I would like to state that this isn't a thread to argue about if something is offensive or not. If you personally disagree with something being put on here that's fine, but this post isn't for expressing that, it's only for collecting a list of things that are or are potentially hurtful. If the staff wants us to debate on something that they're on the fence about, they will ask for our input. Whether they change something is entirely up to them.

I'm not going to say these descriptions are okay, and they definitely should be changed. But keep in mind, most of these items are relatively old. I don't know what the average age of staff members is, but wasn't Keith like 16 when he started the site? It's possible whoever wrote some of these descriptions was just young and immature. Of course that doesn't make it right, but it's possible that whoever wrote it would not agree with the sentiment now.

Anyway, I'm glad that staff's response in the other thread was a willingness to change item descriptions like these. I think we need to just keep reporting them when we see them. Maybe there can be like a singular thread where people keep track of which items are problematic and staff can change the descriptions when they get a chance. There are over 100k items on the site, which is a lot for someone to go through all of them on their own, so it would probably be helpful to keep some sort of list whenever we come across one like this.

That's a great idea! I lost it earlier but after I posted this I came across another description that was "edgy" mean humor. It would be cool to have a place to easily put things and I think it'd also be easier for staff to keep track of when they have time to change things.

I definitely remember the years that this kind of humor was normal, I'm also really glad that it's not the norm now (at least in the spaces I'm in anyway). I've seen on previous topics (like over a month ago) that staff were eager to change descriptions that used outdated humor or terms. They've even changed item names, so that can be brought up as well.

this minion's name should be changed. Why? Because even though that name is spelled differently it can still be considered a racist term. I've debated with this a long time, but maybe now is the time to bring it up. Its bothered me ever since I saw the name. Maybe change it to Darkling or even Darkwing.

I think that if you say it out loud and it sounds the same as the racist term, then the difference in spelling doesn't matter and it should be changed.

I mean blackie/whitey is a pretty common name for pets (I've mostly seen cats) the name only referencing their coat color. Considering the description has no reference to anything race related that one seems innocent to me.

I'm guessing this thread was started because of that other thread with those old Survival clothing items.

I can't find the original post, but I remember in the non-pet revamp thread someone said they would like the description for one of the items to do with Quentin (I think it was the Collectible Quentin Plushie or whatever it's called) to be updated so that it doesn't refer to them as "the real thing" since that can be misinterpreted as offensivley referring to NB people as things (which probably wasn't intentional which was why I said misinterpreted). So I thought I'd share that here to be added to the list of items that could do with changed descriptions.
