I think these were all drawn by different people - looks like a lot of us have grown up a bit over the last 15 years!

Happy to change hateful things, of course :)

'Spaz' is an ableist slur in the UK. It comes from 'spastic' and is used against people with disabilities ranging from motor neuron and multiple sclerosis to autism and Down's. As an autistic child and teen I've had this word used against me more times than I can count. Though I know it's an innocent word in the US, like 'fanny' just means 'bum' and not 'vagina', Subeta does have an international audience.

A less weighted word like hyper, silly, goofy, or playful could easily be swapped in. Maybe the card could be 'Confused Mahar' and the minion could be a 'Zilly' or a 'Caffiend'.

I think its a good name. Not controversial, we can just list stuff and leave it up to staff whether or not they think it should be updated. Let them work at their own pace too, whenever they have time.

those have bothered me too, but never enough to actually brave the storm of posting them.

I should add those survival scrap items to this list! I did see the staff open to changing those and that's what encouraged me to post about the item I found in the first place. I'll also try to see if I can find that Quentin item and will add it if it hasn't been changed. EDIT: I found the Quentin item, you were right. I'll add that! I can definitely see how it could read in a dehumanizing kind of way. Something like "This plushie is genderless, just like Quentin!" could work.

Thank you! Honestly I would hate to see what I thought was funny 15 years ago, even if I still had similar morals that I do now. So much learning and a lot of cultural shifts happen over the years!

Thank you! : )

In north america it's not as big of an insult but it's accepted the same way 'lame' is, which, isn't great either tbh. Since lame is another insult that comes from ableism. And you're definitely right about making sure things aren't hurtful even if some areas don't use the word in the same ways. (I can think of a 'c' word that friends in some countries use as a general insult but where I live it's a pretty intense one haha)

I'll add those items to the list! Also Caffiend is a great pun.

That's what I was thinking! Thanks for your feedback, I really do want this to be a low pressure thing, I know staff work really hard and have a lot going on already.

I know this thread is people asking for item names and descriptions changed for social reasons, but these items are a problem because the descriptions do not indicate at all that they do. The descriptions are just confusing or may lead a player to think they put a water vulnerability curse on your opponent. This leads to people just ignoring them and having to be told these are used to prevent freezing in battle.

anedit: Maybe it could be changed to something like "These crystals have a chance to bless your pet, cloaking it in warm desert air to protect it from being frozen in battle." It describes what the mod crystals do without being misleading, vague or being too specific.

Yeah that's super misleading, considering they're a battle item that could cause a few problems when people use them. I'll add them to the list with a note about why they're there. Thanks!

EDIT: I added a third category for 'Name & Description'.

I did a quick search on subetalodge for items with "oriental" in the name or description and added those as needed. I'll do more words as I come across them, or if anyone has any words they'd like me to do then you can ping me here or message me!

These aren't necessarily my personal opinion. It's all a judgement call I'm just looking for candidates.

Chav is literally a derivative of a Romani word that simply means "child" used to mock lower class kids (not uncommonly Roma ones) (purple = stupid is kind of a long running gag but this one stands alone)

Not sure if Custom Clothing should be included here, but there are certainly pieces that have issues so why not. If nothing else they're meant to be up to site standards and a tightening of those should probably apply to them too. description is a straight lift of this tweet. Meme status doesn't lift copyright. At least paraphrase or quote it or something. , , , etc Again, other straight up movie/lyric quote CW descriptions at least have quotation marks. Consistency on this point could be good. + grammatical error , etc

The entire point of is to be absurd and mock fad diets and the attitude of depriving yourself so other people might accept you. It’s absolutely not making fun of fat people, it’s winking and nudging to those that have been there and feel that way. Because like, it’s extremely absurd to believe anyone is a pig for eating one whole pea.

I don't know what's objectionable about "lady of the night"?

Quoting lyrics isn't okay, because that's copyright stuff so quotemarks shouldn't save those CWs unless they did get permission. I know there are some CWs different from these which did get permission so these may be okay.

The idea of humor/absurdity has already been addressed on this thread and arguably applies to some of the other items - including a few staff has indicated are bad enough to warrant attention, I believe. I didn't miss the point of the item (thanks for implying that though), but it's still fat-shaming and borderline eating disorders used as humor even if it's flipped around. That's exactly what's being addressed here. Reclamation of words and ideas has a place but that place probably isn't Subeta items/descriptions.

Also I don't think the "so other people might accept you" part and the emphasis on that ridiculous dichotomy comes through as strongly as you think (which aside from the commiserating is why the item is supposed to be redeeming). Like yes, it is patently absurd? Absolutely. But so are a lot of the actually meant to be hurtful/negative comments that fat people in any kind of public sphere of attention get every day.

*some edits for clarity

Edit 2: Changing the description doesn't have to mean getting rid of the item or even the message. "Finally a meal no one could ever possibly criticize you for eating.... right?" or something like that covers the same bases without couching it in the very language it's critiquing. And again, not my personal opinion. I debated even including the item (and some others like it) because it is clearly a joke that is at least semi-supportive or ends on a high(er) note. But ultimately it uses the same name calling/insult humor that's being looked at here (regardless of intent) so in it went.

Edit 3: (there's a few others w/Harlot in the name) etc

Quotes in CWs are okay as long as you say where you got the quote during the submission phase. My has a quote from poetry in the description; I credited the author when I submitted it and it was allowed. I think that's the rules.

if you’re going to post that item without comment (while leaving side notes on other items) then yes, I’m going to assume you didn’t get it and I was simply explaining the intent to everybody reading (because, tbh, I was just waiting for it to show up here.) It’s not an attack on your intelligence.

Calling it reclamation is rather grandiose, but why isn’t Subeta a place to have irreverent item descriptions? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind going in and fussing with descriptions that are far too mean-spirited or using outdated offensive terms, but I don’t think it needs to go the other direction and watered down to the point of blandness. Gonna make Neopets items look downright subversive.

The other obviously an over-the-top joke and/or ultimately says 'being fat is of course ok' items included in the post might have been a hint. I was trying not to comment on most of the items unless the potential issue was really not clear (like the copyright stuff with the CWs, or the ethnic component of chav). The homme fatale is obviously, absurdly, a joke but that doesn't make it not really hurtful in much the same vein as the Crossdressers Ahead Road Sign (which has already been changed before even this thread). The sundae ultimately says be fat and happy but it's still obsessive, insulting, and stereotypical about weight.

I called it reclamation as short-hand, especially since some at least borderline slurs are coming up here. And again, I wouldn't necessarily change every item (including ones I didn't personally list). I'm ok with a little subversiveness and sarcasm. Some help making sure it comes across as sarcasm and/or irony might be good in a few cases. But "hussy" is part of the complaint that got this thread made and "fatty" is already listed here repeatedly. "Pig" and the hyped up food-policing tone fit within both of those.

Oof.. 's item description is a real mess. And even after being in recovery from an eating disorder for a few years now, the description for literally made my stomach sink because sure, it's considered "absurd" to think you're gonna "get fat" from eating one pea, but once you've been in that dark place of counting every single grape you've eaten, shit like that just isn't funny.

Hi, I'm a recovery anorexic of 10 years and I find the description of funny as hell. Love it, please don't change it. The absurdity of it is exactly the best way to describe an ED, it's an illness that makes no fucking sense, but it happens unfortunately. Changing the item's description would just make it another bland, forgettable item on here.

Other than that, I do agree some of the descriptions need to dial back on the fat-shaming on a couple of items (the jump rope one definitely), but most of the others I fail to see the problem. I don't agree with censorship for every little gripe. My stance regarding CWs descriptions/names, obviously it was considered fine enough to be allowed through. Creators and artists shouldn't have to censor their work to appease everyone.

What next? Removal of the fetus pops and Bowl of Ebola?

So far I've only added the official items from your list, I'll add a separate category for CWs. I'm not sure what the process for changing those vs official items are but it can't hurt to put them on there! Thanks for your input, and I appreciate you even listing things that don't effect you personally, but you know effect other people : )

I added the rest of those items! Thanks for the help!

Also I would like to state that this isn&;t a thread to argue about if something is offensive or not. If you personally disagree with something being put on here that&;s fine, but this post isn&;t for expressing that, it&;s only for collecting a list of things that are or are potentially hurtful.

So only one side is allowed to post, because any actual engagement of discussion or conversation is seen as bad? That's not exactly how a community works. =/

I wouldn't start with CW creators if I were you.
