People are sure picky aren't they? I too have a Hikie, so I was concerned when I saw that there was a revamp, but I love it! Of course, I have no skills when it comes to drawing or art in general...but anyways. Thubs up from me!

I think it looks very nice.

well I voted for the old one ONLY because of the face. I love the new hikei from neck back...the face is too short for it to be turned that way. I am not really fond of seeing the other eye.

Otherwise, good job XD

I love it. It looks exactly like it did, just with better lineart and texturing. And it's not brown!!! YAY!

I like the face of the older one better. Particularly the eye; it looks friendlier and cuter. I also feel the mane on the new one is a bit too full and furry.

Yikes.. I just skimmed down through the comments. Wow. Ok, first off, I really didn't like it. But, that being said, I have a hard time with change. After looking at it in the polls page, comparing it to the old Hikei image.. there are actually alot of things I LIKE about the new one!

Some have mentioned the tail.. I like the tail myself. I don't think it is too high. It is pretty much where the old one is, and it looks fine. The color and shading of the new one is great too. I like the new eye also. The color and detail is very pretty. There was some question as to the eyebrow.. but it isn't supposed to look like a real horse.. I raise horses.. and I think the subtle differences in the Hikei are what make it so cute and appealing. The feet look awesome.. I love the hair around the hooves.. and I also love the new mane.. Great job!! I see the shine, but instead of plastic looking, I see health and vitality.. isn't that what a shiny hair coat means?

To be quite honest, the only thing I don't like about the new version, is the right side of the head being visible. I used a piece of paper and held it up to the computer screen.. and if you get rid of the right side of the face, just at the bridge of the nose, it is stunning. Just my 2 cents.. and I really hope the face issue is resolved.. as I have Hikeis and was just about to get another.. but I shall wait out the revamp.. to see the end results. Good luck to the artist responsible!! Wonderful work!!

One thing I do want to mention though, the link to the polls is messed up.. it leads to www.subeta.net NOT www.subeta.ws. You might want to fix that.

Wow, looks great! Only thing that annoys me is how thick the front legs are. Other than that, it looks awesome. Props to the artist.

I love the redraw, wish the tail was a bit longer, but other than that I think it looks nice!

I really like the update to the Hikei. However, i do have some suggestions to it. I photoshopped it a bit using my tablet to change some elements. So i hope the artist of the new Hikei does not take offense to me having changed it as a mere suggestion >.< I really love the new Hikei but it seems a little bulgy a bit for me. As reference i have a before and after picture

  1. All i did here was extend the snout and whited out the other cheek of the face. For me the new face seemed a little akward or chubby with the rounded cheek on the left side.

  2. Here i made the mane a little tattered. (there really wasn't anything wrong with the mane in the first place. But out of personal preference i tattered it and in front of the face of Hikei added a few pieces of hair to the front. It's merely personal preference)

  3. i made the legs a little smaller and even added in the balls of the joints in the back. (i also had to add in the extra toe for the hind leg since it was originally covered by the previous front feet) I figured since Hikei is half horse half feline, his horse half should have a less bulky appendage :3

  4. And most finally, all i did here was arch up the tummy. It gives Hikei a sense of being Lean :3 I wanted Hikei to seem a little older, so in order to do that i got rid of his baby fat.

That's all i have to suggest for Hikei, and once again i really hope i didn't offend anyone. Its just a mere suggestion and i made it out of my own personal preferences. I don't know if anybody likes my changes. But thanks for the new update on Hikei! <333 ~Aijuko

Okies so I just got the Email from the newsletter and I think that the picture of angelic Hikei, should be the Hikei body for the revamped Hikei. Its the perfect version of him. But thats my opinion

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Deleted User

I always pictured the Hikei as being a flighty, fast-running pet. This one looks...fat and dopey to me. The head looks too big, and the legs look too short and fat. Perhaps if you made it look less like a hippo, and more like a horse, my thoughts would change.

Not saying I didn't vote for it - I did. I'm all about change. But, I feel that some aspects could change. The front legs, for example, look fine, but I think they need to be longer. The head could shrink, and the nose could become a bit longer (to make it look more horsey).

Good job, though...looks more 3-dimensional than the first.

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Deleted User

Nah. I prefer the old one. The old one appeared to have more personality. It's expression was more mischevious? Coy? Smirky? Can't find the right adjective. Plus I like the way the mane and feet were drawn in the old one better than the new one.

There's something about the body I just don't like. It kind of looks like a fat dog mid-sit. Also, the head is too large, and it seems like the tails are too short. The pose altogether is not very dynamic whatsoever - especially considering the variance of poses in the DM, Hydrus, Reborn, etc versions of the pet; it suggests that the Hikei be a tad more active.

If I could, I'd vote for daniig's version. It looks much better than both the old and the new.

I like CaveAdsum's version, too. It seems to have more personality than the stiffer new version.

Maybe make it's back legs a bit more pronounced and larger? They look a bit awkward compared to the front legs. And I agree, make the snout longer.

I really like it, but I'd suggest making it's face a tad bit longer, so that it has a longer snout. Also, the tails seem to be coming too high off it's back, perhaps put them a bit lower and have them curl and flow a bit more. Other than that, great work, I love it.

I like the mane and tail, and the shape and proportion of the limbs is quite nice. I think if the back had a little more hollow and less of a straight line it would help the chest feel muscular and not chubby. I think it would be interesting to see what it would look like if the head was reared back a bit more, instead of drooping forward. It could give it a more regal look. I'm not very fond of the mule-like length to the ears.

I like the basic pose a lot, hence voted for the revamp. The issues folks are having with the anatomy seem a little strange. The Hikei has both a puppy and pony quality and think the ONLY change needed is that the legs could be placed a little more naturally. It is not as stiff as the original but not as relaxed as it could be. Nice job overall!

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Synbar

I really don't care for it. Constructive criticism: Hind legs need more muscle and toes look flattened, with claws way too small (IMO). Front legs fine. Head needs to be more front on if you want both eyes visible. More motion and less static would be nice, too. Thanks for letting us give our pov's!

No sir, I don't like it. The old one was adorable and innocent. The face on this one is much less streamlined and makes it look more masculine. I know the old one was very compact, but it looked more petite instead of stubby and blocky.

I like the legs of the new version, but I overall like the old one better. This one looks between chibi and... Not chibi, which seems kind of strange to me. I mostly like the old one, and the head of this one is a tad too big. Maybe try a new picture and comprimise between the two?

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by syllepsis

I think this one is overly cute - it looks like a chibi. I think I'd like it a bit better if the face were a little longer or less rounded (as a few people have noted the head is very large relative to the rest of the body).

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Deleted User

I like how this has more detail, but i like the pose of the original one but great job!

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Deleted User

That's the redline I made - I'm no expert in anatomy, I can see some flaws in my redline, but I hope it ilustrates my point:

  1. Tail/s to high. I think they should come from where I drew just one tail.
  2. Longer body - The body right now is way too short, I can't see how you could fit a ribcage there.
  3. Chest/ Front legs - The shoulder is way too high in my opinion, and the leg that is the frathest from the viewer comes in an unnatural angle.
  4. back Legs - they start really thin and end a lot fatter
  5. Head - That eye shouldn't be visible, if you take it away and fix the lines a bit, it looks more natural.

In my opinion the Hikei really needs a revamp, I voted for "New", and there is definetely an improvement, but it needs to be taken a bit farther. Also, I'm not too fond of the ultra-chibiness - we have chibi pets for a reason, right? Probably, a "fixed" Hikei in this same pose might be smaller on the 200x200 square to fit nicely - my redline is over that size by some pixels.

I hope I helped in something, and again, I really think this will be an improvement for the Hikei.

I think it looks lovely.
I do wish the mouth had a little more expression - a little smile or something, but not everyone wants that, so that's okay.
The thing that stands out for me is the top blue marking on the nose...it sometimes looks as though the left side of the mark is just hanging in midair instead of actually wrapping over the facial ridge that seems to be there.
I don't own any Hikei's but I would be fine with this revamp - it isn't too drastic. (Unlike what happened to my adorable Turdle sniff) Very nice revamp, TheDMW.

Normally I would rag on about horse anatomy, but this hikei just works perfectly. It sticks to the general style while still obviously a bit equine. Really, to me, this is an awesome revamp. I would prefer this over the last revamp, and hope that little is changed about it.

I feel that the whole thing is just really...squat. I dunno if it's just me or not because I know that the old one is somewhat squat as well but this one seems even more. I think it might be because the head is a bit big for the body. Nice redraw otherwise. :3

This is cute, TheDMW. Thanks for the redraw. I do like the tweaks that Pants made to your art in regards to the smaller head and larger tail. I also like the suggestions of modifying the leg lengths to make the front and rear set more level. All in all, it's very sweet-looking.

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Deleted User

Hm. I really love this revamp. Everything except the back legs. I think it's that the paw pads are so round, not flat. They don't look like they're supporting much weight, and he looks a tad weighty! Also, the back legs seem a little bit long? Other than that, I really love it.

Rudeness is not the way to get what you want, twits. C:

Anyway. Lovely work on this one, DMWlublubs. After several months of work behind the scenes, this little guy’s come out really nicely.

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Deleted User

-the artist-

Thanks for all your feedback guys- I'm really enjoying it!

Most of the things I've read so far I can pretty much agree with and those that can be tweaked in will- like making the tails a bit larger etc.

As to the comments on the un-horse like face you are completely correct in pointing out that the face is anitomically not equine. That's just because we were trying to match the stylization from the colors already released so their revamps won't be too extreme:

Those chubby cheeks and the fatty puppy-like anatomy are also what make it different enough from the legacia, you know? Since they're pretty key to its specie's identity and recognizeability they'll probably be staying.

I totally see now that you pointed it out that the left side eye shouldn't have a shine spot because it's in shadow- probably where the sense of strangeness is comming from.

As for it being very chibi like- yes it is but don't worry, the revamped chibi version will be MUCH more chibiful even than this.

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by KiwiYa
User Avatar

This revamp gives me my faith in the artists back. Phew! x) I only have a couple things.

  1. The tail is too high up; it's sticking out of its back.

  2. The pose makes it look kind of... lopsided. If you could raise the front left leg, or really, any leg, it would look a lot better.

Also, it -is- pretty chibi proportioned. I'm not complaining about that, because I love it. But I'm sure some other users are, uh... disgruntled.

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Santur
User Avatar

It looks pretty good to me, except for the head bothers me a bit. The left side of the face being visible makes it look a little funky. And the pose IS a little boring, I think a back leg up would look a little more exciting. Other than that, I think it's very nice.

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Deleted User

I wont be pointing out anything that others have already pointed out, just one more new idea. I think that the tail is a bit too high up on the butt, making it seem as if someone forgot to draw it in and just stuck it on last minute. Take away that small bump in the back by the Hikei's back leg and move the tail down a bit. Other then that, I see not too many problems. =3 Good job on the revamp.

The Hikei has always been very My Little Pony. That's why the reborn hikei was redrawn to look more chubby and pony-like. The legecia is our more "elegant" horse-like pet.

And yes, hikeis have always had paws for hind feet.

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Bif425
User Avatar

I only have two suggested changes...or perhaps three, but the rest is fabulous!

  1. I like the head itself however it you just moved it up a little bit higher so that the Hikei had more of a neck, that would be great.

  2. The orbs on the first proposed revamp were really shiny and lovely, please bring some of that back

  3. The few changes that CaveAdsum made and posted a picture of in these comments make a WORLD of difference, at the moment and Hikei looks kind of mean and/or akward

However, the rest of the art and positing etc is fantastic, well done and I hope you are proud of all the work you have put into it.
