This this this this. I cannot agree enough. People who have a desire to participate in a clothing-based content are most certainly the users who are passionate about clothing. It makes sense for the prizes to be clothing. For someone who collects stickers or reads books, there is not much desire to win (or indulge in) an avatar-centric event.
Summer in Centropolis had a book as its top prize (which is around 50mil in shops) while the lesser prizes, a sticker and two wearables, are considerably lower. The sticker is less than 2mil, one clothing item is 500k, and the second is under 100k. It's illogical.
The moment I saw this event - an event I had no desire to participate in because I hate avatar contests - I knew I'd better start selling things. Because there would SURELY be at least one rare book prize I'd have to buy from someone who won it. Annnddd I was right. |D (Thankfully is a wonderful human being and sold me both of the book prizes. ilu 5ever)
I still don't get what would have been SO bad about having a prize shop for this?
The suggestion I offered several pages back was a mixture between guaranteed prizes and a prize shop. H&R won. There's no denying that, so they could have automatically gotten their special H&R themed items, the band members getting them in addition to their special green eye thing.
Also the Granny Smiths, who apparently got themed items, could have gotten theirs automatically too. But not H&R, which I am under the assumption is what happened. I may be wrong but why did H&R get Granny Smith prizes when they have nothing to do with each other? I'm rambling now. Anyway.
After that all the other prizes could have gone into a prize shop. That way people can get things themselves according to their own priorities. The people who want plushies? Go ahead and buy them. Sticker? Fine. Wearables? Sure!
The only people who would get upset over a prize shop would be the people who didn't play a single game yet think they're entitled to a multitude of prizes.
I got a sticker for scoring top 25% of the game, and let me tell you, I don't actually give a damn about stickers. But there are people who do, and they would have been elated to buy them from a prize shop with the points that they earned. I can tell you right now that if this had gone the prize shop route, I would not have bought a sticker. If I did, it would be last priority if I even had any points left to spend.
I didn't know that people cared about stickers so much, but after seeing that they do, it's a little messed up that a sticker was one of the exclusive themed prizes.
The sad thing is, I've been excited when the BotB was over and they said "next weeks" for the prizes to be released, because I thought "If they need weeks, they might for sure have a prize shop with many awesome Items" and all we got was like... a few cookie crumbles? Wow. No really, it is disappointing to see that the hard work playing that damn game didn't matter in the end because I would've gotten the same stuff if I just did not play it at all.
edit Don't get me wrong, I did not expect a ton of Items, just the chance to be the one who decides which ones to get would've been nice. /edit
In previous Events, like the one where we had to play the new released games every day (I do not remember what this Event was about so I do not remember the name as well), I knew that my prizes would be probably based on how much effort and time I invested. And yes, I played the games as much and good as I could. The outcome was that I could get many nice Items and in the end I knew my hard work paid off. In this Event however I fail to see the logic in effort and reward.
And if many Users could not play this game, well - then just give more options to earn points instead of just one shitty game.
The first Event of this kind, yes? Yeah, I do think so as well.
Yep. The original Peka-Boo poster said "Games" anyway. You know, plural. With an S. Games. Which means more than one. Instead we got literally 1 game. 1 way to get points. Half the people couldn't play and half the people hate this style of game. I'm just saying that literally any other style of game would have been better. Or even have more than one game. Which was implied from the beginning. But not implemented.
As one of the band members, I personally would not mind this (not that Subeta really needs to consult us if they want to do it or anything, but I thought I'd pitch in!). 8)

Ah, that makes a lot more sense, then the "no collectibles at all" idea. Thank you for the clarification! :)
Sorry you feel it's a cop out answer, but just because you have a super awesome screwdriver doesn't mean it's always the tool for the job. I'm not discounting the usefulness of prize shops or saying "no prize shops, ever!" just that sometimes they're not practical. A prize shop for the CW contest for instance would have been ridiculous because there was only a few prizes - and so things were done differently (sorry about that sticker). And again, since apparently I wasn't clear in my original post, my question and comments are in reference to future events and prizes; not this event!
I don't think the lack of a prize shop is quite as much the problem as the lack of a clearly defined and consistent criteria for prizes. For example, Luminaire 2012 didn't have a prize shop, but the prize distribution was based on a defined criteria in that points were counted to a total score based on the number of snow fairies turned in, the medical supplies donated, and the battle challengers defeated (with harder challengers worth more). However, the problem with Pekaboo wasn't so much the lack of a prize shop, but rather the lack of a consistent prize criteria.

At the very least, put the books in The Hustler. Do something to make them available to the general populace at less than 50m / book. This was the least enjoyable event I've participated in on Subeta -- and that counts "let's get rid of all the super rare plot / event / collection books drive" and "lag-con 2013".
Everything I wanted to say has been said, I've discovered, after spending some time reading through this thread. It's really sad that there is so much that I agree with from the users here that I actually can't quote it all, I'm pretty sure my post would be the longest one ever and maybe even wouldn't fit.
All I can really say at this point is that Subeta has been weaning me off of it for a few months now and to be honest, now, I'm pretty much completely done with actual participation and effort. I drop in, because I've invested a hell of a lot of time and money into this site, and have made some good friends on here, but don't be fooled into thinking it's because I enjoy the site any more that I log in every few days.
The event...where to even start without repeating everything. I knew somehow that HnR would win. They were a clear winner. And yeah, I liked 'em, and yeah, they had an awesome theme! But I liked another, smaller (popularity-wise) band and went with what I liked instead...and missed out on...almost everything, prize-wise for doing so. Now I wish I'd followed the crowd, only because of the way the prize distribution was - ridiculously uneven.
I joined a band, made an effort, our band was pretty cool (we were mermaid/sea themed). I played the flash game once. Seriously, once. I had 0 motivation to make an effort because Subeta has discouraged me from doing anything worthwhile on this site nowadays. :| And then! Low and behold! It's a good job I didn't make more of an effort because I wouldn't actually have even been rewarded any more for it because a) my band - which I wasn't the creator of, just btw - didn't make the finals and b) I didn't support the winning band. It's seriously fucked up that people who spent hours on one game, racking up points, didn't get the most prizes.
VIP? I don't even want to comment. I was one of the people who dropped what little sP I had left at the last second just because I maybe hoped Subeta would start to suck less. I was sorely mistaken. I did love Oatmeal. But yeah. FML.
And now collectors are screwed...oh my. Subeta, it's like you're deliberately trying to drive away your entire userbase, one section at a time! Making collection prizes that rare is just stupid. Collecting isn't meant to be actually impossible. Very, very, very difficult? Maybe, yeah. But not impossible?! That's pointless?! As someone else on this thread mentioned, why would I even be motivated to collect anything ever again now that I know it's not possible to complete any of them (for which there are achievements)!
So done omfg. Just. No.
There was no consistent prize criteria for Peka-Boo because it was made up as the event went along. I'll be more disappointed if that isn't the case. It's blatantly obvious that some things weren't only adjusted, they weren't planned at all.

How did you know that tho? Even us playing for horns and roses didn't know that, and the scores were so close, and we actually had less people (so if you followed the largest crowd you'd have lost anyway!!), so if you truly did know congratulations on your superpowers!
(ok i'll stop commenting on this every time someone says it but it just annoys me, but i'm over it lol)
I have a lot of catching up to do with this topic, but I just want to add to this,
Intangible things can also be trophies (idk why but I love them xD), special forum titles and things like help staff design / name / describe items. Help staff create a set of stickers, a set of beanbags, a set of plushies; if we're going to clothing, either help staff create a set of clothes (be a temp Subq designer?) OR upload your own clothes set to the site as regular items without any item type restriction (of course, it'd have to meet criterias, but wouldn't be custom clothing!) c: Allow items that make reference to you / your team / your group. Help staff design a new feature. A new NPC. Maybe even help staff design new battle opponents or new weapons? If that one would be feasible/interesting at all.
(ideally, all of these items would become available to the public in different/more 'acceptable' amounts, of course)
There could also be account perk bonuses (like idk, if you were a top restock war player, you could get 30% off shop prices permanently* attached to your account? random numbers, idk if this would be overkill, but it's an option) *edit: or temporarily
There could also be (good!) csc/sp prizes, especially tied to high scores, which could be very sweet and still fungible, in a way that it wouldn't be game breaking for anyone. That and a permanent high score list (bragging rights, haha) could be a nice thing.
Wow, I am reading through many of the messages here since I still feel sort of confused with the whole prize thing, but from the messages I read I didn't see anyone complain about the one problem I had multiple days. I couldn't play the game at all. It wouldn't even load for me. It made me feel like I let down the band I was supporting (my scores weren't even the best, but were points added) and I had 2.5 days I couldn't play.
The whole things seems odd to me and reading from all of your perspectives there are things I should have considered when I did my feedback :/

It was obvious it would be either Granny Smiths, either HnR because these topics were always, always at the top of the boards. Nearly always. It was a coin flip to determine who would have the highest score.
1395 vs 1003 was the average point. first one is HnR, second is Granny Smiths, and I really really would have liked to see the other scores, really.
YES LET'S TALK ABOUT THE VINYL. Originally my "so over this I can't" level was at about 50% when I saw all the cool HnR items I couldn't have (pretty much can't, being literal) but hey I only had one book to buy.
Then I wondered wtf the vinyl was, and for some sinking reason I felt like I needed to check the url.. book. book. I had better see those CD's we have onsite become readable yesterday. As well as all those morose code paper snippets because if a VIYNL RECORD is readable why the hell aren't those? Oh right subeta logic of "because I said so", right. Insert when my rage-o-meter flew off the charts and like.. if I could go to jail forever for the brutal and sadistic murder of a website, I'd be in jail right now yo.
Overall plot = wild card. Fashion week = Wearables Reading Drive = could have been some books Epicon = pick some popculture references for which items will be based Culinary event (please let's do this) = pick out some new food dishes
Love that. Love it. [edit] I'd love to see the HnR's items recolored for the masses and put in the CS or a temp Hustler-Tent for 10m/250 csc + those books, too.
I paid about 500csc a piece for the books, but I still wouldn't mind seeing them hustled at the same time for 250csc as well.
And I just wanted the vinyl for my pet who likes to DJ, there goes that hope.
Those are all Cash Shop items though. I can't think of any Cash Shop item that has been released that you only had one chance to get. When people spend a ton of money on retired CS items, it's because they either got tired of waiting for it to be re-released somehow or they're too new to know that it will be available again. On lots of other gaming/pet sites, those items never would be available again.
Sometimes even when there is a prize shop, events will have prizes that will always be ridiculously rare- that's just how some of them work. Playing the game doesn't always mean you come out the winner. I can't tell you how many hours I'd spend every day refreshing on the shops during restock wars and sometimes I'd have nothing more to show for it at the end than the cheapest prizes because things just didn't work in my favor.
I think most people agree that the way the prizes were awarded this time needs some adjustment, but some of what I'm seeing here is also just sour grapes or people being bitter because a new event wasn't 100% predictable in the way that it played out. Not everything has to be the Masquerade or a Restock War with a different coat of paint and just because you didn't like something during this event, doesn't meant that it was wrong of staff to do it that way.
Personally, even when prizes were glitching at first and I thought I only won four things, I was briefly disappointed, but it ruined nothing for me. I really liked a lot of the different features of Peka-Boo just because it did have some unique elements. Some of Subeta's other holidays have felt a bit.. stale, I guess, in last couple of years and I liked this even though it wasn't perfect. (And honestly, no event will ever be perfect for every user. It's truly impossible to please everyone, especially on this site.)
