Link to this post: FAQ about Legacy Names/Non-Unique Pet Names

Whether you're new to Subeta or you've just come back after a long hiatus, you may have some questions about Legacy Names and/or the Non-Unique Pet Names Update. Below I have collected the answers to many of the frequently asked questions. If you have questions that are not answered here, feel free to post them so we can keep accumulating the answers.

Note: I do not work for Subeta. I just want to help out my fellow users.

Impact on pets created before the change

What happens to a pet's legacy name if I change their actual name? Nothing! The legacy name is and will always be (unless you get rid of it) the same as it was on the day that non-unique pet names were implemented.

To clarify, let's say you had a pet named Larry. His profile shows "Larry, Legacy Name: Larry". You then change Larry's name to Frederick the 3rd. His profile now shows "Frederick the 3rd, Legacy Name: Larry". Later, you decide you want to call him Freddy. Then his profile would show "Freddy, Legacy Name: Larry".

An important thing to remember: legacy names do not change.

Is it possible to remove the legacy name section? Yes, there are two options:

  1. You can use coding to hide the legacy name on the pet's profile. <style> .legacy-name {display: none;} </style>

The pet will still have the legacy name, and you will still be able to use the legacy-name-only links, but no one will be able to see it.

  1. You can permanently remove a pet's legacy name at the Bathhouse Cleansing Pools and choosing "Fresh Start". This option was made available on 7/27/20.

This is free and unlimited, meaning you can do it to as many pets as you like, and it will not cost you sP, CSC, or any other currency. However, it is also permanent, so choose wisely. As put it, "once the legacy name is removed, that pet will just be like any other pet with no legacy name. So no more legacy name on the profile, and no more legacy name link (since that link goes to 'whatever pet has that name as its legacy name,' and after you clear it, there will be no pets who have that legacy name anymore.)"

What is the benefit of having a legacy name? If you owned a pet with a name you really liked before the change, for example, Dimple, then you can prove that you had that name "first" (or, at least, most recently) with the "legacy name" section saying so. It's a point of pride for people who want to show how hard they worked on getting certain names.

However, if you have a pet name "Bobidhdh the boblehad_357" and you want to change their name to Dimple, you'd probably be really happy to get rid of that legacy section and just have the pet be like any pet created from now on. Especially if Bobidhdh was a name that is associated with some unpleasant memories.

Some people strongly value legacy names and prefer to adopt pets with legacy names whenever possible.

If I do a name exchange with two pets, will their legacy names also be swapped? No. If you swap "Bob" and "Jake", Jake will now say "Jake, Legacy Name: Bob" and Bob will now say "Bob, Legacy Name: Jake".

Remember, legacy names do not change. "Legacy names are set in stone, because they are meant to honor the name a pet had prior to today's update...there will never be a way to change the legacy name to a different name, as that would defeat the purpose of them." ( again)

It is possible to do a name exchange of a pet's actual name. There are certain restrictions, though:

  • You can only name-swap if you haven't reached your monthly or weekly rename limit.
  • Swapping names will count as a rename for both pets, towards your limit.
  • Non-Gold accounts may name-swap once per week, but it counts as your rename for the week.
What if a legacy pet has a disallowed name? This likely affects only a small amount of users, but if you have an issue with a disallowed name, file a ticket to ask for clarification and possibly a free name change.

If a user admin does the name change in circumstances like these, it won't count towards your monthly name change limit.

Currently, the site only checks a pet's actual name, not their legacy name, for appropriateness and allowability. However, if your legacy name is an issue, you can file a ticket for that as well. Depending on the problem, staff may end up deleting the legacy name. Staff will only clear legacy names in the case of it breaking site rules regarding bad words, extreme vulgarity, etc. This is an actual violation of site rules.

If the name is "disallowed" due to something like invalid characters, periods, etc, and you don't want to change the name, you won't get a warning or anything like that. The reason for the "disallowed" notice is because certain site features (such as links) do not function correctly with certain pet names. There is also no penalty if you never make a ticket and choose to keep the grandfathered name - you will have to accept however that certain site features may not work properly with your pet and that those bugs will not be fixed.

Reference

How does linking to a pet work now? If you have a pet without a legacy name, there are 2 ways to link to them:

  1. With the ID link. For example: https://subeta.net/petinfo.php?petid=991230
  2. With the name link, including the owner's name. For example: https://subeta.net/pets/written/catricia

If you have a pet with a legacy name, there are 3 ways to link to them. The two listed above, and: 3. With the name link, but without the owner's name. For example: https://subeta.net/pets/catricia

You can also use the shorthand links on the forums: [pet not found] ^ This works for both kind of pets. [pet not found] ^ This only works for pets with legacy names.

[pet not found]

If your pet's legacy name is not the same as its actual name, the links still work as above, but make sure you use the right name in the right link. The actual name will require the owner's name in the link. The legacy name will not.

Impact on pets created after the change

Do newly created pets get a legacy name? No, only pets created before the change have this designation. Even if you change the name of a new pet, it will not show their previous name as a "legacy name".
Do I still need to give a new pet a unique name when I create them? Nope! It can have whatever name you want it to have from the get-go. You do not need to make a unique name first.

Pets and Transfers/Abandonment

If I rename a pet and then abandon or transfer them, will they keep their new name? Yes! They'll keep their name until another user decides to rename them.
If I change a pet's name and then someone else adopts them, can they also change their name within the same month? Yes! Name changes for each pet are account-specific. As said below, "That means if you rename your pet, then transfer it to another user, they can also rename the pet. However, if they then transfer it back to you in the same month, you won't be able to rename it again."
Can I adopt a pet who has the same name as one of the pets I already have? No. If you attempt to create or adopt a pet with the same name as one you already have, you will receive an error message and the system will not let you adopt them.

If you find a workaround to this and accidentally end up with two pets of the same name, please file a ticket with admin so that they can fix this.

Is there a way to tell if a pet in the pound has a legacy name? Unfortunately, there is no official way to find that out right now without first adopting them and looking at their profile. Some users asked for legacy names to be shown in the pound, but Subetan staff decided not to do this.

If you see a pet in the pound who has a name such as "LEGACY Ranch", this is due to a user changing that pet's actual name. Likely the user wanted to show that the pet's name, Ranch, is in fact a legacy name and to make it easier on fellow users who are looking for legacy names. But again, this is not an official designation, and the presence (or lack thereof) of LEGACY in the pet's name does not necessarily mean the pet does or does not have a legacy name.

If you look at IDs, all pets with an ID 5996000 or higher will absolutely not have a legacy name, because they were created after the change. Older pets will be a bit hit-or-miss, depending on whether or not their previous owner changed their name or cleansed them of their legacy name in the pool.

Questions related to accounts

How often can I change a pet's name? It depends on what kind of account you have.

If you have a gold account, you can change each pet's name once a month. This is based on the calendar month, so if you changed a pet's name on the 27th of the month, you can change it again on the 1st of the next month. However, you would not be able to change it again until the 1st of the month after that.

If you have a regular account, you can change only one pet's name once a week (with the exception of name exchanges). This was a change implemented on 7/28/2020. The week starts on Monday and ends on Sunday, so if you change any of your pet's names within the week and you have a regular account, you will have to wait until the following Monday to change a pet's name again (either the same pet or a different pet).

Both options are free.

When does the week for regular accounts or the month for gold accounts start and end? According to the recent update:
  • The weekly limit resets on the rollover from Sunday to Monday each week.
  • The monthly limit resets on the 1st day of each month.
If I have a regular account, can I change the same pet's name every week? Yes. According to in the comments to the update, "Yes, since the rule would be 'Did you already change a pet's name this week?'"

However, if you changed a pet's name while having a regular account and then you obtained a gold account, you would not be able to change that pet's name again in the same month, because as says, "No, since the rule would be 'Did you already change this pet's name this month?' And the answer would be yes, regardless of what type of account you when you changed the name."

Or to put it simply: Regular account = one name change per account per week Gold account = one name change per pet per month

Is it possible to own two (or more) pets with the same name? It was originally, but not anymore.

"This was an oversight, and it should no longer be possible (assuming I fixed the code up correctly). If you currently have two pets with the same name, please file a ticket to get one of them renamed by staff. Renames done by staff will not count towards your monthly limit." (per below).

Can I still use the loyalty totem to change a pet's name? No. As of this news post on 7/28/2020, this option was removed. The Subeta team is currently working on a different loyalty perk to replace it with.

Impact on Subeta in general

Are usernames next? No. stated in a comment on the news post that "Usernames will always be unique."

It makes less sense to have non-unique usernames. First, there are considerably fewer users than pets, so the need is not there. Second, people refer to each other by their usernames, so talking on the forums and in the shoutbox would get quite confusing with non-unique usernames. And third, it would mess with the coding of the non-unique pet names.

How will the search page work now? The old search page was taken down shortly after this update. After a brief interval, a new, temporary search function was released. The programming team plans on making a more comprehensive search in the future.

Currently, the search page will only show you pets with the actual name you searched for, not the legacy name. Take my pet Rien for example. While her actual name is Rien, her legacy name is Notice. At the time of writing, if you search "Rien" you will see her listed as one of three pets with this name, but if you search "Notice" you will not see her listed.

Other threads related to the change include: Non-unique pet names (a feedback thread) What names did you change? (a bragging thread) How do you feel about legacy/non legacy names (an opinion thread)

Suggestions: Post-update Legacy names and similarly A Wish(tm) RE: Legacy names Alternate Subtitle for Legacy Pet Names on Profile pet link by ID code Additional ways to pay for more pet renames Please make it (much) harder to remove the legacy name. This was addressed in a news update. Please allow us to remove "legacy" status from our pets. This has been approved! Show legacy names in the adoption center details Staff have decided not to do this. More pet slots? More pet slots became available for purchase with this update.

Is the once-a-month rename account-specific or pet-specific?
This is now fixed and it's now tied to the account, not the pet, as we intended. That means if you rename your pet, then transfer it to another user, they can also rename the pet. However, if they then transfer it back to you in the same month, you won't be able to rename it again. (Please keep my original comment in the quote for context.)

If you go to your pets page, there is a little arrow in the corner of each pet section that gives you a drop-down menu. In this drop-down menu is the option to change the pet's name.

Here's a question I don't have the answer to yet: does the month limit for name changes mean calendar month, or 30 days?

Also, how do we link to pets in the pound? And does throwing the pet into the rift affect their linkage?

Thank you so much for posting all this information and also for leaving information about the questions and requests that were already addressed.

I think the only question I still have is about how the Name or Legacy Name will affect the web address of the pets profile. From what I can see when I go to a pet profile it shows a pet ID number does this mean it is unaffected by either the Name or Legacy Name?

The address with the ID numbers will remain the same. The ID numbers don't change with the name change - they're an integral part of the pet - so it's the most stable way to link to a pet.

If you have a pet without a legacy name, there are 2 ways to link to them:

  1. With the ID link. For example: https://subeta.net/petinfo.php?petid=991230
  2. With the name link, including the owner's name. For example: https://subeta.net/pets/kniga/catricia

If you have a pet with a legacy name, there are 3 ways to link to them. The two listed above, and: 3. With the name link, but without the owner's name. For example: https://subeta.net/pets/catricia

You can also use the shorthand links on the forums: [user not found] ^ This works for both kind of pets. [pet not found] ^ This only works for pets with legacy names.

We've asked for a shorthand link using the pet ID, but it hasn't been implemented yet.

Does that clear things up for you? :)

Thank you very much for your answer! I have a few pets that have periods in their names and I wasn't happy that I would have to rename them for their links to work because they have had their names for over a decade. But with this new name system I can give them their names without periods and it looks like their legacy will continue or at least that is what I am hoping. I will submit a ticket and get an official reply and name change.

Quick question: What happens to a Loyalty Totem that was used to change a pet's name after the 7/28/20 change? For example, because I was blind and didn't read the fact that my GA allows me to change a name for free, I used a LT to change my angelic telenine's name and now the LT disappeared from my inventory (the name change was as of 8/30/20). I know this is stupid to ask but is there anyway to get the LT reissued if a ticket is filed? I believe the answer would be "probably not" but I wanted to get a clear opinion/answer on it before moving ahead with one.

They actually made a news post update about using the loyalty totem to change names that says:

Quote
Pet Name Loyalty Totems
Some of you may have noticed an issue with Pet Name Loyalty Totems: It would not allow you to change the pet&;s name, but it would take the item. If this happened to you, please file a ticket and you will receive be given a new Loyalty Box as reimbursement. In addition, those who were affected by this issue will be given a name change that will not count towards your account limit.</p>
<p>The Loyalty Petname Totem is no longer available. Those who currently have a Loyalty Petname Totem can change it back into a Loyalty Box to choose a different prize.

So you absolutely can file a ticket asking for the loyalty totem back to choose another prize. :)

Also, it's not clear from your post, but if you made this change with the loyalty totem after this news update was posted (7/28/2020), then I'm sure they would be very interested to hear that it is not disabled.

DO NEWLY CREATED PETS GET A LEGACY NAME?
No, only pets created before the change have this designation. Even if you change the name of a new pet, it will not show their previous name as a &quot;legacy name&quot;.

This is exactly what I wanted to know and it's not the answer I was hoping for :( 💔 I was really hoping that if unique pets were created in the future they would also get the legacy status as being "first" of their name.
