Apologies if this is a duplicate thread or doesn't make sense - I'm both super sick and very tired and ahh, the anxiety!
At the time of writing, the last time a programmer has made an admin post has been 2 weeks and 2 days ago. Normally, I wouldn't care if Staff were about quiet around this time of year - it's the holiday season and staff deserve to have a life outside of Subeta.
However, two weeks with no word from programmers when the site has been difficult to play since November is concerning. The site is still rough since maintenance, and there are still a ton of issues, some which make other people straight up scared of engaging in parts of the site in fear of their efforts getting thrown in the glitch void (see Intelligence not increasing for example). There isn't one staff post on that thread as of writing.
I don't doubt that things are getting worked on, but we need assurances that things are being worked on. We need something other than radio silence from people who have an idea of what's going on, especially on issues big issues like the thread I linked. I do see and posting that programmers have been alerted to a problem sometimes, which is great, but it would be nice to hear about the progress from the programmers themselves more often. It doesn't have to be long or complicated. Something short and sweet can help ease some of the worries.
I know this is very much a tired subject, but sometimes, I feel like that Staff just need a reminder that "hey, we like it when you talk to us."
I just want a counter for Melody to ease my own anxiety there. Even with the sporadic forums not loading and the application errors and the wardrobe not loading right and the potions to change pets not working correctly and...

Honestly--yeah. I know it's the holidays. I know people are taking rightfully-deserved vacation time and the like, and are probably working over what would be vacation time to fix the site. I've heard that staff are looking into issues, but only because I submitted a ticket for my pet's intelligence dropping. Some public acknowledgement that people are looking would be really, really comforting.
Truthfully, I'm more concerned about the ads even though I'm not seeing them (adblocker). The fact that they're popping up for GA users and are so obtrusive is really worrisome, since I know staff are pretty diligent about honoring both ad-free browsing for GA users, and making sure ads aren't annoying. It's probably something weird with the programming or the ad service Subeta uses, but the paranoid part of me worries about a security breach. :C
I agree about programmers, but can I give a massive shoutout to personally for the MAGISTRAL work they've been doing this season?
I mean, they're usually excellent with being on top of stuff, but I had a little problem that was most likely cron-related, and they've been extremely communicative and supportive throughout all of it. Kudos for their presence.
Am I still able to post in this thread? Is it still within the limit? Sorry if it's not.
So, you probably all know that we're getting impatient with waiting for Survival to start, and I'm a bit salty that you seem to be leaving it until the last possible day you can start it without extending it too far into March. I know you're most likely making sure everything works first, but without you telling us, it really feels like you're just being lazy and leaving it until the last minute, partly to troll us and partly because you don't have as much enthusiasm for events as you used to. There's barely any hype anymore.
I was disappointed with how late Morostide was last year as well, and that was before the downtime where you changed servers. That one also felt like it was left until the last minute. If you're doing stuff behind the scenes or real life is getting in the way then fair enough, but unless you tell us (we don't even need all the details), it just feels like you're making us wait on purpose without a good reason.
Sorry, I just feel like I wouldn't be as annoyed about this if I knew what was going on.
I know has been working on avatar display issues in Wardrobe+Avatar Problems: FIRST POST UPDATED 5/9, and snowballs just started displaying reliably as of yesterday. My guess/opinion is that since Survival revolves around HAs, with the viruses and such, that they want to make sure things are stable enough first.
I agree, but that's all assumption. Because without the staff telling us anything well....we just don't know.
Now if the staff would just tell us that hey, Survival is about HAs and we want to make sure those are working before it starts up then that'd be one thing. But we have radio silence, waiting days for Survival to start. Communication about events like this has always been janky when it comes to staff; and I get it, they don't want to commit to a specific day and then put themselves on a time crunch. But when the potential dates for something fluid like Survival are coming up some kind of announcement about what's going on and if we can expect it sooner or later would be nice you know?
We have indeed been testing HAs to get them working properly (in terms of programming) and the art department has had a few setbacks in the last month or so due to life events such as children being born, house moving and equipment failing and being replaced. Also some broken bones. You know we're a small team as is, so yes - a bit behind but nearly ready to go!
Thank you for keeping us updated, many congrats to the art team member who had the baby, and wishing a swift recovery to the one that broke a bone! Sounds like an awful lot for a small dept to weather.
Survival doesn't have a set start date. Looking at the past four years, you could argue it starts on the 16th, so even by that measure, they're less than a day late. Seems a bit early to be jumping on the staff about communication. :/
It's good to finally know the reason, although since not everyone looks at the forums or even just the admin posts, it might be good to make a news post about it, or leave a message at the end of whatever unrelated news post happens today (since they sometimes do that). Just something like "Due to various issues, Survival will be a bit later than expected this year" or something.
This is true, but that doesn't make it any less important; knowing that the event should start somewhere around this time means that at the very least if the staff know it'll be on the later end of things they should say something. Even a quick "Hi there's some issues with [insert thing here] but we should be starting in the next few days" would suffice and keep a lot of issues at bay. Literally this issue with communication seems to come up every year around this time, and we all get it doesn't have a set start date because the staff don't want to lock in on a date and then have to postpone due to whatever issues but they should still at least say something instead of leaving us all in the dark until it suddenly starts with no warning.
Exactly! Just a little message is all it takes. And it seems like every time we bring this issue up/have to rehash it someone always says they will/will try/whatever but it never gets done.
The staff here are great. I'm sorry to hear there's been irl issues with the art department and believe me of all people I get that it happens but leaving us all completely blind to what is happening in regards to a major holiday never sits right with me and the staff should be more open about what is happening even if it is just a small update message of some kind.
But that's how all non-CSC related events start on Subeta. I can't remember a time where they said hey this event is gonna start at X time on Y day.
I'm all for holding staff accountable when they screw up but this just seems a little entitled. I could understand if it was a week late but it's literally less than a day after its usual start time.
I wholeheartedly agree. This is the main reason I get annoyed with the seasonal events: certain people get up in arms and DEMAND to know everything from staff right away and if it’s even one day later than someone expects they complain over and over again.
Some people have resulted to hounding staff in the SB and it’s just disgusting how entitled people are acting.
This holiday doesn’t have a specific start date, staff doesn’t owe us ANY sneak peeks or dates given ahead of time. We’re still mid February so people need to calm down and stop freaking out.
'Entitled' is a word a lot of people like to throw around without really seeming to know what it means. Are the people hounding staff in the shoutbox acting entitled? Absolutely, and they are wrong about it. Is anyone in this thread demanding anything? Nope. We're simply asking for the courtesy of being given something more than a very broad time spectrum and having the event sprung on us. Just because that's the way things have always been done does not mean that is the way they should always continue to be done; maybe, just maybe, it's time for Subeta to make a change. To realize that many of its players are adults instead of teens, that as adults we have lives and having a more narrow estimate of when a major event we might want to take part in is starting is more beneficial to everyone.
For the umpteenth time, I'm not saying the staff should say that any event that doesn't already have some sort of definitive established start date will suddenly have that. But for example since Survival is meant to be a Valentines Day replacement and start around the same time it would be nice to on the day have a little news announcement saying even a quick "We're not ready yet, but more updates will come as we are closer to being ready" or something of the sort. It would be nice to get an announcement today saying "The art department had some issues and we will be starting a bit late this year" or something similar.
It would be nice to have a news announcement with something, anything, so that we have an idea of what is going on instead of being left in the dark. Instead of an answer buried in the forums where it's hit or miss if people will see it at all. It would be nice if people didn't have to make threads like this at all because we actually had some idea of what was going on.
No demands are being made, just suggestions for the betterment of the site. If staff are more open and communicative it benefits everyone; more users are in the loop on what is happening and incidences of people harassing staff, as unfortunate as they are, will probably decrease dramatically which is better for the staff as a whole as well. If you think that's an 'entitled' attitude then that's on you, but I love Subeta and I want to see it thrive. I don't want to hear staff are getting harassed in the SB by a handful of angry users because that just plain sucks, but at the same time I can't say I don't understand the frustration of the users who are expressing themselves like that and I wish it wouldn't have to come to that at all.
Honestly watch the SB for a day and see the whining and bitching that goes on, and the harassment Amber gets every time she posts in there. Read some of the comments in the general discussion forums every time a holiday doesn't start when one person or another thinks it should.
I didn't say THIS thread is full of entitled people, but in general yes MANY people get VERY entitled when they think an event should start and hasn't yet.
Staff have other jobs and RLs too and have specifically stated the reason there AREN'T concrete dates is to avoid having to push deadlines back when things mess us, giving an approximate time they start, but not an exact date because when they DO give exact dates, if anything happens there's a massive shit show of people ranting and raving that they have to wait for something.
Look and when they decided to permanently move Vesnali to be later in the year to spread events out, lessen stress on staff, and make things flow smoother. There was a HUGE uproar and insults flung at staff like crazy just because they tried to make things run better.
Honestly subeta is a great community overall but the people who bitch with EVERY SINGLE EVENT that things aren't good enough, don't last long enough, don't start soon enough, and its the same people EVERY TIME... its frustrating and I honestly don't blame staff for waiting.
If you had someone harassing you every single day for something, I bet you'd be less inclined to rush too.
Its not even LATE yet and people are upset and bitching in the SB every day.
And I wholeheartedly disagree that forum posts don't matter. They are linked on the new page and staff has said over and over again that users need to check them for the latest up to date information. If people choose not to listen to that? It's on THEM.
My hot take of the day: I'd rather wait for an event that doesn't run the constant risk of breaking the site and/or lag than have a halfassed event go live and fight lag and 504 errors every other page.
Don't @ me on this.
[edit]Realized I posted on this before, but I think this still remains valid even a while later. shrug emoji

Listen, they're a small team managing this site that just did a major server move of years and years of data. I get that it's frustrating, but cut them some slack, and cut out with the passive aggressiveness. Especially since I'm willing to bet that they're not exactly overflowing with cash to hire more staff to handle stuff.
I don't really understand the staff's decision to not offically announce the delay because "there's no set time and we can start it whenever" because even though there isn't an official start time, it's been very consistent the last few years and when you compare this year to it, it sticks out. It will be the latest that it's ever started as well.
Maybe it's just me being Autistic again, and used to routines and things being consistent and wanting to be informed when they're not consistent. Part of why I started a forum group for Autistic people is so we can talk about the things that are bothering us without being judged, because I feel like I get judged a lot just for talking about what bothers me.
