[SPOILER=> FAQs]Where do I find the Battle links? Most locations related to battling (such as the Healer, Coliseum, and Battle Quests) can be found in The Sacred Sands, and each one will also have links to other battle places at the top of the page. You can also reach the Battle Coliseum and Battle Quests from the Games page, or use the Battle Pet widget that has links to the Training Center, Coliseum, Armory, and Scroll Library.

How do I beat/unlock [challenger]? What weapons does [challenger] have? What Tier should I be to fight [challenger]? etc. The amazing has compiled this information and more on nearly every challenger on her Comprehensive Guide to Battle Opponents (v2) forum thread, which can help you form a strategy for them using the weapons that you have. Take a look at the weapons they have and defend against their most common icon types. Look at what icons they defend against and attack with ones they don't block. If they freeze or steal add mod crystals to your weapons to help prevent that.

If all else fails though you can always make a thread on the battle forums asking for help. <3

Is Battling Expensive? Yes, HOWEVER much of this cost is spread out over time, and it takes quite a while to reach the higher Tiers, where average prices do start to get pretty high. There are cheaper options at every level though, and many battlers do just fine with budget sets; they just need to train their pets a little more to compensate. Attempting to train a pet quickly can also be quite expensive, but you don't have to do that all at once to start battling; there are a good number of opponents to beat at lower and medium levels.

Ultimately it is up to you how much you want to spend on battling, I () chose to spend almost all my sp on battling, so I don't have many HA clothes or other things, but as I don't really care about them that was fine for me. You can spend however much or little as you like. <3

What do elemental icons do in battle? There is no type interaction between the elemental icons. This isn’t like Pokemon. All you need to know is that every weapon favors certain elements for attacking and blocking. You need to learn to block the elements an opponent mainly attacks with and attack them with elements they do not block.

My pet is X tier, what's the best set/weapon for them? There are some threads for this over at the Set Advice sub-forum, but your budget limits will naturally affect what weapons you use. You do not need expensive weapons to battle; you can beat just about every challenger with budget weapon sets. If you find yourself unsure about which weapons are available you can always check out the Subetalodge Weapon Database, or make a thread in Set Advice.

Is there a limit to pet stats? A pet can only have a total of 35k in their tier-related stats (Health, Strength, Defense, Speed). That is 8750 points in each of the 4 main stats if you were to train evenly. There are many different (but effective) ways to distribute these 35k stats, which you can see more details on in section 4.3 of this guide.

How long will it take to train my pet? This depends on a number of factors:

Do you want to use high-end weapons, or budget sets? Do you want a capped pet to be able to get the best prizes from a boss, or do you just want to beat Prodigy 10 times? Do you want to try a specific build (like 0 speed or low defense/health as possible) for a challenge?

You have to decide for yourself why you want to get into battling and determine how far you are willing to go.

If you're consistent with training, doing dailies like BQs, buying stat boosters and battling as often as possible you will reach higher tiers pretty fast. If you can make the sPs and handle the costs that entail with battling, affording good weapons and scrolls shouldn't take you too long either. Battling is a personal journey, and we all have our own reasons for pursuing it. Figure out your end goal first, and go from there.

Can we ever earn challenger loot again? How do I get more of [insert challenger loot item]? You can get more challenger loot by training another pet to battle, but occasionally the battle admins will issue a 'Battle Reset'. A reset is like Christmas/Luminaire came early for battlers! It allows us to re-earn EXP and loot previously obtained prior to the reset. These resets are rare, and only happen when major changes are being implemented into the BC and the opponents. Always keep an eye on the news for when a reset is announced, as you'll want to try and farm as many wins as possible before it happens.[/spoiler]

> Popular Abbreviations Because any hobby with enough of a following will generate it’s own language. If you ever don’t understand what someone is saying don’t be afraid to ask - we’ve all been there <3

Battle Terms BC = Battle Coliseum (where we fight) BQs = Battle Quests Boost = Either a stat boost, or using stat boosters BONA = Blessing of Natural Armor (either the blessing or the mod crystal that gives it) EXP = Experience Points God Weapon / Godlies = Refers to the high-end ‘best’ weapons for the endgame, may also be... ...Original Gods = The original high-end weapons, which you don't need because we have newer (and cheaper!) ones now MC = Millionaire Center OPB = Once Per Battle OU = One Use Parched = Parched blessing (or the mod crystal that gives it) SemiB = Semi-Breakable Token = Refers to the token currency used in the Battle Shop

-- Section 1: Battling Basics --

So you want to try battling? Congratulations! It's always nice to see new faces join us! :) This first post contains details on the most basic things that you'll need to get a pet ready to start battling. We'll be visiting quite a few pages throughout the guide so here's a quick guide to finding them, in case you haven't seen them before.

> Navigating - the important battle links Several battle-related links can be found in the Sacred Lands (or Saherimos), including the Coliseum, the Healer, and the Battle Quest page. There are also the Secluded Shrine (where we can make scrolls), and the Oracle and Shinwa, who's quests can raise our pet's stats.
Click for bigger image

Meanwhile the Training Center, where we will be training our pet/s, can be found in Riverside.

Right nearby Pete's hamburgers, ironically enough...

Each page related to Battling (except the Secluded Shrine, the Oracle, and Shinwa) also has links to everything else Battle related at the top; so if you can get to any battle page, you can get to all the rest.

If you want faster access to these links you can also add the Battle Pet widget to your sidebar, which will track the status of your Active pet and has links to the Training Center, Battle Coliseum, Armory, and Scroll Library. To do so, head over to the Widgets page (Personal > Dashboard > Widgets) and add it to your list.

And with that out of the way let's start learning!

1.1 Your Pet’s Stats

In order to get our pet ready to battle we first need to talk about their stats. We can easily find these on our Pets Page, as well as several other places. Here two example pets, with the important numbers highlighted on Shoebox.

[box=orange]Hunger / Happiness: How hungry and happy our pet is. If either of these are at 0/10 then they won't be able to battle for us. We can either feed them and give them a minion, or we can book them into the Lakeview Resort in Veta (or the Rathskeller Inn if you have the Omen Islands unlocked) and they will be kept fed and happy for us.[/box]

[box=lightgreen]Level: Our level doesn't affect us in battle, but we will need to raise it in order to train our other stats. Health: Our pet's health, if this reaches 0 in a battle we will lose and our pet will need to be healed before they can fight again. Strength: Our strength determines how much damage we deal each turn in battle. Higher strength means higher damage. Defense: Our defense determines how much damage we block if we block the type of damage we are being hit by (more on that in section 3.4). Higher defense means more damage blocked, and less health lost. Speed: Our speed affects certain luck-based mechanics in battle, such as critical hits and blessings and curses (see section 3.4 again). Higher speed is good, but not as essential as other stats.[/box]

[box=lightblue]Intelligence & AP: Our pet's Intel determines how many Alchemy Points, or AP they have. Every 16 points of intelligence gives us 1AP, and our AP determines what and how many Scrolls (see section 1.4) we can use. Intelligence is NOT limited by our level, and can be raised as high as we like/can afford. There are multiple ways to raise intelligence but the cheapest way to start is to read books to your pet.[/box]

[box=plum]Tier: Our pet's Tier is determined by the total amount of Health, Strength, Defense, and Speed that we have added together, and affects what weapons we can use in battle (a Tier 1 pet cannot use a Tier 5 weapon). Higher tier weapons are generally more powerful, so we want to raise our Tier to use better weapons.[/box]

> The 13 Tiers Note that the stat numbers in the brackets assume that your pet is being trained evenly, so your individual stat levels may be different if you don't do so.

Tier 1: 40-299 Total Stats (approx. Levels 1-30 and 10-74 in each stat) Tier 2: 300-599 Total Stats (approx. Levels 30-60 and 75-149 in each stat) Tier 3: 600-1199 Total Stats (approx. Levels 60-120 and 150-299 in each stat)
Tier 4: 1200-1799 Total Stats (approx. Levels 120-180 and 300-449 in each stat)
Tier 5: 1800-2599 Total Stats (approx. Levels 180-260 and 450-649 in each stat) Tier 6: 2600-3399 Total Stats (approx. Levels 260-340 and 650-849 in each stat) Tier 7: 3400-4399 Total Stats (approx. Levels 340-440 and 850-1099 in each stat) Tier 8: 4400-5399 Total Stats (approx. Levels 440-540 and 1100-1349 in each stat) Tier 9: 5400-6399 Total Stats (approx. Levels 540-640 and 1350-1599 in each stat) Tier 10: 6400-7999 Total Stats (approx. Levels 640-800 and 1600-1999 in each stat) Tier 11: 8000-11999 Total Stats (approx. Levels 800-1200 and 2000-2999 in each stat) Tier 12: 12000-21999 Total Stats (approx. Levels 1200-2200 and 3000-5499 in each stat) Tier 13: 22000+ Total Stats (approx. Levels 2200-3500 and 5500-8750 in each stat)

All pets start out at Tier 1, with 1 Level and 10 points each in Health, Strength, Defense, and Speed. As you can see above Mr. Flibble has stats far higher than this, and is a lot stronger than Shoebox, who is still pretty much at base stats.

1.2 The Training Center

While there are other ways to raise our pet’s stats, the best way to begin is to head to the Training Center in Riverside and put them in some training sessions.

Once there you’ll find Jim, the resident trainer, and a list of all your pets that he can train. Here are Shoebox and Mr. Flibble again:

Ready to build those muscles! (I’m sure Shoebox has some somewhere)

[box=orange]Time: This is how long a single training session will take, which is determined by our pet’s Level; reaching certain levels results in longer training times (users with an active Gold Account have 15% lower training times, so your number may be higher). Cost: This is how much SP we have to pay to train our pet, and is always our Level x 45. [/box]

> Training Times by Level

[box=lightgreen]Dropdown: Here we can select which stat we want to train, with some restrictions - each of our stats can only be trained to 2.5 x our Level (except Intelligence), so some stats may be missing from the dropdown until we raise the pet's Level.[/box]

[box=lightblue]Train your Pet button: Clicking this will enroll our pet in a single session for the stat chosen. We will need to come back once it’s over to train our pet again.[/box]

[box=plum]Autotrain button: Autotraining is a special service that will give our pet 24 hours worth of sessions in our chosen stat, so they can keep training even when we’re not around. It does, however, cost an extra 25 CSC to use. We can see the details of what Autotraining will give us under the buttons.[/box]

Whether we choose to use autotraining or not each training session will gain our pet 1-3 points in our chosen stat once the session is done, which will be our main method of gaining stats for a long time, so get used to checking in every so often to train.

Because Shoebox’s Level is so low we can only choose to train them in that. We could choose to autotrain Level, but we only need to gain 1 point to be able to train their other stats (5 x 2.5 = 12.5) so I’ll choose a single session and return in 51 minutes to train them some more.

Mr. Flibble meanwhile can train his Defense (195 x 2.5 = 487.5), and I want him to keep training while I sleep, so we’ll spend some CSC and put him in autotraining. This will give him 14 sessions of training, so he'll gain 14-42 stats, depending on our luck. Note that he will keep gaining Defense even though he will have over 487.5 points before the 24 hours are up, so don’t worry about wasting any CSC because of that.

> Should I train X stat more? Often debated is whether it is better to train stats evenly or not. This is entirely up to you, but it is generally recommended to train them more or less evenly through the early Tiers, especially if this is your first battle pet.

That being said, you can do quite well by having a high HP or high Strength build, it's just less complicated to keep them all roughly the same. Just don't neglect your HP or Strength too much and you should do just fine.

You can check out section 4.3 for more information about different builds at the end-game, as this is when you should start thinking about your final stats.

> Is Autotraining worth it? Again this is a matter of personal preference; if you want to train a pet through the lower tiers quickly and don’t mind the extra expense then it’s a great way to do so. It does become less and less efficient as your Level increases, however, as you will have less sessions per day but it will still cost you 25 CSC to use.

Many battlers choose to stop autotraining at around Tier 5-7, but it’s entirely up to you how, or even if, you want to use it :)

Thankfully our pets can still battle while they train, but they will need some weapons to fight with before that. [sup](I guess bare fist fighting must be against health and safety)[/sup]

1.3 Weapons and the Armory

There are a number of places where we can get some weapons to fight with, but if you’re just starting out battling (and haven’t visited the page before), head on over to the Beginner Guide to grab a set of free Tier 1 weapons.

While our friend Kain is very modest about them, these weapons aren't bad (and they’re free!). They get sent to our Inventory so we will first need to move them to our Armory in order to use them in battle.

Clicky clicky!

With that done let’s head on over to our Armory to have a quick look at our new toys. Your page should look something like this, only less cluttered (I have been collecting weapons for a while).

Weapons are alphabetised for your convenience

On this page the usual item hovers are replaced with special Battle ones, so you can easily see what your weapons do. If later on you decide that you don’t need a particular weapon any more you can click the Remove button under it, and it will return to your inventory. For now though let’s look at what Kain gave us.

The shield's information is currently incorrect (but has been reported)

Though the new item hovers may look confusing at first glance we don’t need to understand it all yet. Here’s a very quick run-down of our weapons: [box=lightgreen]Rainbow Star Rod: Our Star Rod is an “Infinite Use” weapon so we can use it every turn in a battle if we choose, and it will deal 8-10 icons of damage on each use. (Ignore the different icons for now; we’ll look at those in section 3.4).[/box]

[box=lightgreen]Pea Bomb: Our bomb has a “Limit 1 Equipped” restriction, so we can’t bring more than 1 into battle with us. Unlike the Star Rod we can only use our Pea Bomb “Once Per Battle” (OPB), but it will deal 14 icons of damage to make up for that. We can also modify this weapon, but we’ll talk about that in section 3.5.[/box]

[box=lightgreen]Bronze Quill: Our Quill also has the “1 Equipped” and “OPB” restrictions, and will only deal 4 icons of damage. The good thing about this weapon is that it will also Heal(:heal:) our pet for 25 HP when we use it, which is a lot of HP for Tier 1 pets.[/box]

[box=lightgreen]Evergreen Shield: Finally we have our shield, which is a "Semi-Breakable" weapon, this means that it has a chance of breaking each time we use it in battle. It only breaks until the end of battle, so don't worry about losing it. It doesn’t deal any damage, but instead it will block 2-3 Physical, and 2-3 Earth icons of damage, provided our opponent uses those icons. This means we will take less damage (and lose less HP).[/box]

We can bring up to 8 weapons with us when we enter a battle, and we can use 2 of them each turn. Since we only have 4 right now it would be a good idea to add some more weapons, especially since we only have 1 Infinite Use weapon.

The easiest way to find weapons to use is to consult the weapon list on SubetaLodge.us, which has up to date information on every weapon on the site (though brand new ones may still be in testing). Even using the search filters, however, you will notice that there are MANY different choices, some of which are not that good or are very expensive, so we’ve taken the time to pick out some decent Tier 1 weapons for you to choose from. With the exception of the amazing Phoenix Quill these should be reasonably cheap, and perform very well for their cost.

> Tier 1 weapons Remember that you can only take 8 weapons into battle, so you don't need all of these, choose whichever you like ;) Infinite Use Weapons 12 icons of damage 10 icons of damage 4 icons of damage and heals 10HP 6 icons of damage and has 1 modification (or mod) slot 5 icons of damage and has 1 mod slot
OPB Bombs 14-16 icons of damage 13-15 icons of damage, won by beating Buttwing Bomber 5 times (Tier 1 pets can do this!)
OPB Healing Heals 20HP, nice if you can't afford the Phoenix Quill below yet Heals for 100% of your maximum HP This is BY FAR the best OPB healer in the game. It costs 8mil sp from the Millionaire Center (10mil outside of summer) and I highly recommend that you pick it up as soon as you can afford it. You will use it from Tier 1 all the way to Tier 13, so it is well worth the investment.
[box=LightCoral]You do NOT need expensive weapons to battle! The difference between the most powerful option and a cheaper version is often very small and not worth the extra expense, unless you are battling at extremely high levels, or trying to beat an opponent early. The stats of your pet will always be more important than the weapons you use.[/box]

Now that we have some more weapons (remember that you will need to add them to your armory) let’s put them into a premade Weapon Set so we don’t won’t need to select the ones we want to bring with us all the time. Head over to your Armory and hit the Create Set button near the top.

The page can look intimidating if your armory is rather full, but all we need to do is select our 8 weapons with the checkboxes underneath them and hit ‘Edit Set’ at the bottom of the page.

We can also give our set a name (I name them by their Tier for simplicity) and reorganise our 8 weapons with the little drag icons, just remember to hit Edit Set again once you’re done to save your changes. Regular users can save a total of 3 weapon sets, while those with an active Gold Account can save 5, and we can view all our sets at the top of our Armory.

Power looks so good when it’s organised...

Easy right? Weapon sets are especially useful later on when you have a lot of different weapons cluttering up your Armory. Note that you can use the same weapon in multiple sets, so all your pets can use the same Phoenix Quill.

Weapons are not the only things we can use in battle, however, and we will significantly increase our chances of victory if we bring a Scroll too.

1.4 Scrolls and Scroll Sets

Scrolls are essentially a 3rd weapon that we can use each turn in battle, which makes a huge difference when trying to beat opponents. Like our weapons there are Infinite Use scrolls that we can use every turn, and ones that are OPB. Unlike weapons, however, they are not restricted by Tier, but by our pet’s Intelligence stat.

Each individual Scroll requires a certain amount of Alchemy Points (or AP) to take into battle, and we gain 1 AP for every 16 points of Intelligence that our pet has, and the easiest way to gain Intelligence is to read books to our pet (it’s also the cheapest, until you run out of cheap books to read).

You can easily find cheap books to read with SubetaLodge.us buy filtering the item list to books and ordering by ‘User Shop Price (Low to High)’ (this link will do so for you). Be sure to check which books your pet has read first though (go to Pets, then click the link in your pet’s dropdown menu), as they will only read each book once.

More powerful scrolls cost more AP to equip, so we will eventually want to read a lot of books, to gain a lot of Intelligence, to use more scrolls. For now, however, we are going to gain enough Intelligence to use a single Champion Scroll, which needs 3AP to use, or 48 Intelligence.

Here’s hoping you know your 16 times tables…

The Champion Scroll is Infinite Use and will deal 2 icons of damage and heal 12HP every turn in battle. While it isn’t the most powerful scroll it will serve us well until we can gain enough AP to use other ones. You can look at all the scrolls currently available on the Scrolls List at SubetaLodge.us, but we’ve highlighted a few here that are commonly used.

> Some good scrolls Note that many of these can be either won or built for a lot less than their user shop price. Also you do not have to get these any time soon, as many will only become useful in later Tiers!

Infinite Use Scrolls

OPB Scrolls

Freezing Scrolls Also OPB, but freezing is such an important mechanic that they deserve their own section ;)

As you may notice scrolls can be rather expensive, especially when you consider that seasoned battlers will have multiple copies of powerful OPB scrolls so they can use them turn after turn. Some scrolls though can be created for a cheaper cost at the Secluded Shrine in Saherimos, as long as you have enough AP.

Our Champion Scroll is one of these, but because it requires 10AP to make we’re going to ask a smarter pet to do it; many battlers are more than willing to make a scroll for you as long as you can pay for / provide the ingredients, so don’t be afraid to ask on the battle forums. :)

> Making a scroll To make a scroll simply head over to the Secluded Shrine and find the scroll you want in the menu. The Champion Scroll is a Level 2 Light scroll, so we’ll find it there.
There are 5 levels of scrolls at the Secluded Shrine, and every 5AP your pet has will allow you to see another level (the pet needs to be your active pet in order for it to register). Once you have 20 AP (320 Intel), you can see and make everything in the shrine.
Clicking the scroll will bring up a list of ingredients that we will need to make it. These ingredients can either be found in the Spells Galore store or bought from user shops. Once you gather all the ingredients simply click ‘Make Scroll’ to receive your new toy. (And then be happy because you probably just saved a lot of SP!)
Hurrah for savings!

Once we have our scroll we will need to add it to our Scroll Library and make a scroll set in order to use it, exactly as we did for our weapons. While we can temporarily swap the weapons we’re using just before battle we cannot do the same for scrolls, so we need to make a set.

After moving your scroll from your Inventory head on over to the Scroll Library and click the Create New Set button. Then, just as before, select the scroll/s you want in your set, hit Edit, and then give it a name and rearrange the scrolls as you desire, and finally hit Edit again.

To remove a scroll from your set simply uncheck the box - hitting ‘Remove’ will move the scroll to your inventory!

And that's our set done! As with weapon sets regular users can save up to 3 scroll sets, while GA users can have 5. You can view all your scroll sets at the top of your Scroll Library, and you can edit them as your pet gains more and more AP to use more / better scrolls.

Only 2,320 more Intelligence to use our main battler's set, thankfully we won't want all that for a long time yet!

Now that we’ve looked at our pet’s stats, put them in training, and gathered some weapons and scrolls for them, it's time to try some battles. Or at least it would be, only Shoebox is still trying to find some muscles. So we’re going to get our good friend Okkoto show us how it’s done, as they’re a few days ahead of Shoebox in training and will probably have an easier time.
We’ll be that strong soon, just you wait and see!

After all that preparation let’s take a look at how we actually fight and (hopefully) defeat an opponent. We’ll be using Okkoto for this example, but you can follow along with any pet you have, even one at base stats (just be aware that you’ll have an easier time if they’ve had a little training first).

Okkoto has had 4 sessions of autotraining to raise his HP, Strength, Defense, and Speed, and has also read 48 books so he can use a Champion Scroll. This is a nice stage to start battling at, and he should be able to beat a fair few Easy level opponents, which Shoebox might still struggle with; not having trained their other stats yet.

2.1 Choose an Opponent

Let’s head to the Challenge page to find someone to fight, either from the Sacred Sands, or the link in the Battle Pet widget.

Let’s pick an Easy challenger from the Normal tab. Aboxalypse isn’t a real challenger (since he doesn’t hit back), so we'll be trying to beat the Buttwing Bomber instead.

[box=orange]Opponent Tabs: There are 5 types of opponents on Subeta: Normal challengers that are unlocked by default, Secret challengers that are unlocked in some special way, Cash Shop challengers that are purchased with CSC, Super challengers that are unlocked by reaching Tier 13 with a pet, and finally Event challengers that are only available during site events. Within these tabs they are ordered first by difficulty, and then by name, so when you see the alphabet ‘reset’ (eg. Willowisp to Cursed Irion), you’ll know that you’ve reached the next difficulty of challengers. The difficulties are Easy, Medium, Hard, Very Hard, Extremely Hard, and Impossible.[/box]

[box=lightgreen]Pet Dropdown: Here we can select one of our pets to battle against Buttwing (in this case Okkoto). Remember that pets that are Hungry or Unhappy won’t be able to battle.[/box]

[box=lightblue]Choose Weapons button: Clicking this will bring you to a page where you choose which weapon and scroll set you want to use to battle Buttwing with. We’ll also be able to choose a different pet, in case we picked the wrong one in the dropdown by mistake.[/box]

[box=plum]Battle with Defaults button: Clicking this will immediately start a battle with the Buttwing Bomber, using the pet selected in the dropdown and your default weapon and scroll sets.[/box]

2.2 Choose Weapons and Scrolls

Let's hit 'Choose Weapons' to make sure we have everything correct, which brings us to this screen:

[box=orange]Start Battle button: Does what it says - clicking it will start the battle. There's another start battle button at the bottom of the page.[/box]

[box=lightgreen]Opponent: Here's our opponent (in case we forgot who they were), and their BASE stats (opponents will get stronger as we defeat them more). Don't worry if they're higher than yours; we can often beat opponents with 100s more stats than our pets.[/box]

[box=lightblue]Pet and Preselection: Here we can change the pet we're battling with, in case we forgot/ignored the dropdown before, and change our Preselection settings. With Preselection ON, the first 2 weapons and 1 scroll in our sets will be automatically selected each turn in battle, which saves a lot of clicking. You can toggle it by clicking the 'here' in the sentence, but most battlers leave it on.[/box]

[box=plum]Weapon and Scroll Sets: And here we can pick the weapon and scroll sets that we want to use. In this case we're picking the Tier 1 set that we made for Okkoto, since he's a Tier 1 pet, and our Champion scroll, since he doesn't have enough AP for more yet.[/box]

Everything looks good so let's see if we can beat him.

2.3 Battle Time!

After starting the battle we end up on this page, which we refer to as the Battle User Interface, or Battle UI for short.

It's fairly empty for now, since we haven't made our move yet, but let's break it down. [box=orange]On the left we can see our pet and their HP bar. Once we make our turn the results will be shown in the box underneath.[/box]

[box=lightgreen]Beside us we can see our opponent and their HP bar. They too have a box that will show their turn once we make ours.[/box]

[box=plum]Finally on the right we have our weapons and scrolls (or 'spells', as the UI calls them), where we decide what to use on our turn. Because we have Preselection turned on our Shield, Pea Bomb, and Champion Scroll are selected for us already.[/box]

We could change our weapon choices by clicking different weapons, but this looks fine; let's click 'Make Your Turn' and see what happens.

(As before you can ignore all the different element icons for now - we will be discussing them soon in section 3.4. Just know that there are no ‘type interactions’ as there are in games like Pokemon.)

It seems that Buttwing lost all his health so we did very well! As exciting as getting our loot is, let's break down exactly how that happened before we continue. [box=orange]Outlined on the left we can see the damage, defense, and healing that our weapons and scroll did. Because there is some fancy maths involved (you can see it in section 4.4 if you want) our total damage and healing is calculated for us at the bottom. In this case we dealt 26 damage to Buttwing, and healed ourselves for 12HP.[/box]

[box=orange]In the center (also in orange) we can see some extra flavor text about our actions. Amongst this we can see that both our Shield and our Pea Bomb "broke for the remainder of the battle", so we can't use them again in THIS battle. Because we have more speed than Buttwing, our flavor text appears before his.[/box]

[box=lightgreen]On the right we can see what weapons Buttwing used on his turn, along with his total damage and healing. We can see that Buttwing dealt 11 damage to us, and didn't heal himself at all. Buttwing's damage would have been higher, but we used our Shield to block some of it.[/box]

[box=lightgreen]Buttwing's weapons this turn don't have any special effects, so his flavor text is simply that - for flavor.[/box]

Because we healed for 12HP against Buttwing's 11 damage, Okkoto managed not to lose any health this turn. Meanwhile Buttwing didn’t heal at all and only had 15HP to start with, so our 26 damage was enough to bring him to 0 and end the battle.

We can see from this that our training and gathering weapons and a scroll really paid off: Our high HP meant that we would have survived Buttwing’s attack even without healing, and our high attack allowed us to deal more damage than his HP, so we don’t need to make a second turn. Having full health because of our scroll is also very nice (since we may want to try another battle and it’s always best to start at full health) so we don’t have to waste time visiting the Healer.

Let's click ‘See Results’ for our rewards (the best part!)

Nice! As we can see this was Okkoto’s first victory against Buttwing Bomber, for which we earned an Easy token, 1000sp, and a Buttwings item. Okkoto himself also earned 39 Experience (EXP) points. (We’ll take a look at how we can spend our tokens and EXP in section 3.2.)

At this point we could choose to battle Buttwing again for more rewards, where his stats will be slightly increased to make things harder for us, or we can go back to the Challenge page to find another opponent to beat up, again for rewards.

Each opponent will continue to give us SP until we achieve 10 wins, with some special items dropping on the 5th win (usually ones that can only be dropped by that challenger). After our 10th win we will no longer gain any SP, but can keep fighting them for more tokens, EXP, and items.

For now though that’s all we need to know to beat most of the Easy challengers (except perhaps Eclipse, who has a nasty surprise that we’ll discuss in section 4.1), so feel free to try beating some more of them before coming back to the next section.

Remember to visit the Healer after each battle if your pet gets hurt or loses a fight. Losses are nothing to be ashamed of on Subeta (even the top players have many losses on their records), so don’t be upset if you don’t manage to beat an opponent right away - you can always try again.

And again... and again...

-- Section 3: The Next Steps --

Alright, so you've trained your pet, given them some weapons, and even ran through a quick battle or three. But where do you go from here? That’s what this post is for, where we’ll be looking at daily challenges we can complete and how to spend our rewards from battling, as well as learning more about our weapons and how they work.

3.1 Battle Quests, Farming, and Statistics

Located in the Sacred Lands - next to the Coliseum - is a place where you can put your pet’s new skills to the test by doing some daily Battle Quests! There you will meet Reischen, a retired warrior who will challenge your pet to take on 30 of the nastiest, ugliest, and most vicious beasts known to Subeta.
Battle Quests (BQs) start off with the tiny Easy opponents and end with the super powerful Impossible level baddies. The wonderful and amazing has a post detailing BQ opponents within her Comprehensive Guide to Battle Opponents (v2), that will not only tell you which baddies you might encounter, but also give you some insight into what their stats and weapons are like. All opponents you face in BQs will be at their base stats, so you don’t need to worry if you’ve already beaten them a lot outside your quests.
If you find that you’re struggling against a particular opponent, Rei is kind enough to provide you with the opportunity to ‘skip’ a quest (though it’s more of a reroll than a skip, as you stay on the same level) and fight a different challenger in their place. Players with regular accounts are allowed to reroll 1 opponent, while GA players are allowed to reroll 2. Try to conserve your skip/s for as long as possible, and only use them if you really cannot put a dent in the challenger chosen.
For each BQ you complete your pet will earn a set amount of EXP (and occasionally a battle token), and Rei will give you a random item. Every 5th battle you will face a boss of the difficulty level you are currently on, which you’ll earn a lot of EXP for defeating, before moving onto the next difficulty of opponents. Rei keeps giving you opponents all the way until quest 30, which is the very powerful ‘final boss’ of BQs.
> EXP rewards for each quest

I highly recommend doing your BQs every single day, as the EXP that you earn really adds up fast even for the lower quests, so don’t be disheartened if you can’t complete all 30 levels yet!

Farming Opponents If completing BQs hasn’t satisfied your thirst for carnage you can always head back to the Coliseum and battle more challengers for extra SP, EXP, Battle Tokens, and loot.

Each time you battle an opponent they will gain 10% of their base HP, Strength, and Defense for each win that your pet already got against them, like so:

Note that their Speed will always stay the same

For the first 10 wins your pet gets against an opponent you’ll get some SP and a decent amount of EXP, with the largest EXP amount given at win 10. You’ll also get some special item drops for your 5th win, which are usually exclusive to that opponent. Occasionally, beating an opponent for the 5th time will also net you an achievement, along with an extra special item that you can only get this one time - if you sell or lose it you’ll have to buy another from a user shop.

You’ll get a small, set amount of EXP for each additional win after the first 10, along with some different loot. Opponents that are not unlocked with Cash Shop or Millionaire Center items will also drop stat boosting items at a high amount of wins (which we will discuss in section 3.3).

No matter how many wins you have against an opponent you’ll always have a chance to earn a Battle Token after each win.

You can find out what each opponent drops from the spreadsheet linked in the 1P Loot tracker - Collaboration Project.

Overall Statistics If you are ever curious about how your pet is doing at battling, or just want to check up on which opponents you still need to battle, make sure you check out the Statistics page!

At the top of the page you can see your overall totals for the wins, ties, and defeats that your pets have managed, then you can check out each of your pet’s individual records on the left (to see which pesky opponent you still need those 10 wins on), or you can view your records for a specific opponent on the right.

If you ever notice that you have a challenger missing from your statistics page then it means your pet hasn’t fought them yet. You can also check out ’s Comprehensive Guide to Battle Opponents (v2) for a list of Secret and other challengers that you can unlock so you can battle them too.

3.2 The Battle & EXP Shops

The Battle Shop is a special store where we can spend our hard earned Battle Tokens on items like weapons, scrolls, and weapon modification crystals. We can’t buy more of these tokens from other users, so we must earn them ourselves by battling.

As mentioned before we have a chance to earn a token each time we defeat an opponent. Each level of challenger difficulty has their own level of token; so if we want to earn Hard Tokens, we will have to defeat Hard opponents.

If we click the ’Token Trading’ link at the top of the shop we can break down some of our higher level tokens into lower level ones. Unfortunately we can’t convert tokens upwards - we’ll have to battle the tougher opponents if we want the higher tokens.

There are a lot of items in the shop that we can buy, but the Parched Baguette and Blessing of Natural Armor crystals are of particular note, as are the stat boosting potions, which we will move onto shortly, but first we have one more shop to discuss.

The EXP Shop We can head over to the Spend Experience Points page (nicknamed The EXP Shop by the battle community) to turn our pet’s precious EXP into stats.

The more we complete our BQs and the more we battle, the more EXP we will earn and the more stats we can buy!

Let’s go ahead and click on the link under Haluk to see what the EXP Spending page is like.

On the left we can see Haluk’s EXP, their current Tier, and the amount of stat points left until they reach the next Tier. Next to that we have a form where we can decide how many of each stat we want to buy, along with how much EXP each point will cost us.

As your pet’s Tier increases, so does the EXP cost of each stat point. Health is always slightly more costly while Level is slightly less.

> EXP prices per tier + spending strategies

How should I spend my EXP? There are (as always) different thoughts on this. As HP has a higher EXP cost, some players choose to spend their EXP only on Strength / Defense / Speed, as they get more stats for less EXP. Others chose to spend most or even all their EXP on HP because Health increasing items cost more than items to increase other stats, making HP more ‘valuable’.

Some players hoard all of their EXP until they reach an amount that allows them to skip a Tier that doesn’t have a noticeable power spike in weapons, or that they can’t defeat any new opponents on. Others prefer to spend EXP as soon as they can to take advantage of the lower prices and get through the early Tiers faster.

An interesting point to note is that the EXP costs for Tiers 10-12 are the same, while Tier 13 is much more expensive. Many battlers would choose to spend their EXP before reaching Tier 13 because of this.

How you spend your EXP is up to you, but most battlers chose not to spend EXP on Level, as boosting level doesn’t make your pet any stronger in battle.

Let’s raise Haluk’s Defense stat by a couple of points, which will cost us a total of 4000 EXP, and confirm by hitting the green ‘Spend EXP!’ button.

And ta-dah! Haluk’s Defense has been instantly raised by 4 points and he’s that much closer to reaching his next tier. He’s still got a long way to go, so let’s start looking at other ways to raise a pet’s stats apart from training and spending EXP.

3.3 More Ways to Raise Stats

If we have a bit of luck (or are willing to spend some extra SP), we can get hold of several items that will boost our pet’s stats even further (we call them ‘Stat Boosters’, for short). Some examples would be the Limitless Endurance Potion and Tome of Fire, but you can find a full list on ’s Stat Booster List v2.0.
It’s up to ourselves when we want to use these items, but as training goes much faster in the lower Tiers many users choose to save any boosters they get for later on. [box=LightCoral]Some stat boosters are also food or books, so always make sure that you click ‘Use on Pet’, instead of Feed or Read to Pet.[/box]

Here are some ways that we can earn some free boosters or stats:

Opponent Loot: As mentioned earlier, opponents not unlocked through Cash Shop or Millionaire Center items will often award a stat boosting Tome after a certain amount of wins, so use your pet’s Statistics Page, along with the 1P Loot tracker - Collaboration Project’s spreadsheet, to earn as many as you can.

Shinwa: Complete Shinwa's quest each day (before your other NPC quests) and she may just grant you a free stat booster. An easy way to tell which of her rewards are boosters is to check the User Shop Price - anything over 100k will be a booster ;)

Quentin: Completing Quentin’s Quests may reward you with a Mage Amulet, which you can turn in to The Mage for a chance to get a Tome. [sup]General opinion is that you get an average of 1 tome per 8-9 amulets, but it never seems to feel that way somehow![/sup]

Job Agency: Give your pet/s a job and collect their salary from the Job Agency and they’ll occasionally be granted a bonus point in a random stat.

Scratchcards & Coin Machine: Scratching Scratchcards, or using the Coin Machine may give your active pet a random stat boost. It’s not very reliable, but if you get a free card or coin it never hurts to try.

The Oracle: Occasionally The Oracle will pop up and ask you for a cheap item. Get it for her and she’ll reward you by increasing one of your active pet’s stats by several points! It’s highly recommended to have the Oracle widget in your sidebar, so you don’t miss her.

Finally, you may get a random event that will boost one of your active pet's stats. If you ever notice a discrepancy in your pet's overall stats you can probably chalk it up to a random event that you didn’t notice.

3.4 Weapon Icons, Bonus Effects, and More

This section is to help you read a weapon’s most basic stats, as well as introduce some of the extra effects they can have, and how they appear on the Battle UI.

Element Icons Weapons on Subeta can use 9 different elements, namely: :dmg:dark: Dark, :dmg:earth: Earth, :dmg🔥 Fire, :dmg🧊 Ice, :dmg:light: Light, :dmg:magma: Magma, :dmg:physical: Physical, :dmg:water: Water, and :dmg:wind: Wind

Each weapon will either attack and/or block these elements Attack icons will appear as plain icons - :dmg:water: And block icons will appear with a red X - :block:water:

There are no super effective or other such element interactions as there are in games like Pokemon - If you need to defend fire damage (:dmg🔥), your weapon must block fire icons (:block🔥), not water icons.

The icons that weapons use appear in the sidebars of the battle UI, and it’s really important to pay attention to what elements our opponents are using. If you find an opponent’s weapons mainly block Earth icons (:block:earth:), like Terrafirma for example, you won’t do much damage if you use a weapon that attacks with Earth (:dmg:earth:). On the flip side, if your opponent attacks with a lot of Ice (:dmg🧊), like Ice King or Mama Mush, it can really help to bring a weapon that blocks Ice icons (:block🧊).

The higher our Strength and Defense stats, the more damage our icons will deal and block, so it is still important to train our stats, as even the large 50 Icon block will not defend much damage if our Defense is low!

Weapons do more than just attacking or blocking icons, though. Some weapons freeze, heal, and/or have curses or blessings that have a chance of activating. Some will boost your defense/strength/speed, and others will scale with your pet’s tier. This section will cover all of these.

Scaling Weapons Some weapon’s icons will scale (or change) depending on your pet’s Tier or stats. Some scrolls can do this too (the Emerging Rifts scroll for example). Here we can see the Forj Tempered Machete, which scales from Tier 5 to Tier 7:

The higher your pet’s Tier - the more icons the machete will have and become better!

Weapons inside our Armory only show their base icon amounts, so Scalers are only discovered through research and testing. Some weapons may also scale / change in more complex ways, such as having a higher Strength than Defense. The weapon database on Subetalodge.us will indicate weapons that scale, and how.

Healing Healing in battle is what keeps your pet healthy and able to survive. Weapons and scrolls will indicate if they can heal your pet by having the :heal: icon in their hovers or the battle UI.

Healing comes in two types; Fixed heals, which will always heal the same amount, and Percentage (%) heals, which will heal your pet for a % of their maximum HP.

As your pet gains more and more HP your % heal weapons will heal for more, this is why your pet’s HP is often considered to be the most important stat.

Some weapons or scrolls can have a negative healing effect, which will lose your pet HP when used, though they will generally deal a lot of damage for their Tier, or have a powerful effect to make up for this. If you have a lot of HP, the small damage may be negligible, or there may be situations where healing is disabled in a battle (we will discuss this further in section 4.1), meaning that the drawback of the weapon is eliminated.

Freezing Some weapons and scrolls, like the Reborn Icewand of Doom or the Shriek of Despair Scroll, have the ability to Freeze your opponent.

A successful freeze is indicated by a snowflake icon under the opponent’s health bar, or under ours if we are the one frozen! This icon means that on the next turn that fighter cannot use any weapons or scrolls; leaving them helpless. When the icon disappears they will be able to take their turn as normal.

If you freeze an opponent and then continue to use weapons, scrolls, or one use items to keep them frozen then you have what’s known as a ‘Chain Freeze’. The longer you manage to chain freeze an opponent, the more damage you can do to them while they cannot do much to you!

Unfortunately our opponents can also do this to us, but there are ways to prevent this that we will be discussing shortly.

Blasting and Stealing Blasting and Stealing are similar in that they both mess with our opponent’s weapons, either by Blasting them into pathetically weak weapons, or Stealing them to use for ourselves.

There are only a tiny amount of weapons capable of Blasting, and only the Recycle Blaster and the more expensive Soma Tablets are very commonly used.

Blasting weapons can be very useful because on some turns your opponent might use the transformed junk weapon, which can give you a nice chance to heal since they do much less damage.

Stealing weapons, meanwhile, is a bit less useful than Blasting, as most opponents have multiple copies of their weapons, but it can still be useful if you Steal something powerful that you don’t want them to use too much. Many stolen weapons will also damage your pet for 100% of its HP when used, so doing so is often not recommended, but some of them are safe to use, and can be extremely beneficial. If the weapon has bonus effects like freezing, healing, etc. you can also get those benefits to activate too.

Just like freezing, there are also some opponents that can steal our weapons (don’t worry - you get your weapons back after the battle!), which can make us lose very quickly if they happen to steal an important piece of our weapon set. Thankfully there is yet to be an opponent that can Blast our weapons, but Stealing is still a frustrating mechanic to fight against.

Blessings and Curses We can use Blessings to protect ourselves from being frozen every other turn, or having our stuff stolen from us. A Blessing is an extra effect that benefits you in battle, either by protecting you from nasty mechanics like Freezing and Stealing, or by giving you extra defense or healing.

A blessing activates the turn after it’s icon shows up under our pet, and will last a set number of turns; some only last for 1 turn, some for as long as 100 turns!

In the example above Teba used the weapon Shrine of Apollonia, which will always activate Apollonia’s Blessing. It will give some mild protection from Dark, Earth, and Air icons, and heals 20HP for a few turns.

Curses differ from blessings in that they deal extra chip damage to our opponent for every turn that the Curse is active. Like Blessings, they will activate (and start dealing damage) the turn after the icon appears under our opponent. Here we can see that Valtam has inflicted the Smoking Gun curse on the General, while they have inflicted a curse of their own; the Curse of Agony.

Curse Icons cannot be blocked in any way - so curses are a great way to deal damage!

Curses may sometimes do more than just chip damage, however, they may disable your scrolls or prevent you from using a 2nd weapon for a turn or two. You should always take your time to examine the UI when you get cursed, to make sure one of these extra nasty effects isn’t happening before making your turn.

Some weapons like the Shrine of Apolliana or the Rapier of Error have Blessings/Curses built into them (which will be noted on the Subetalodge.us weapon list), but we can add some more through the use of Mod Crystals, which we’ll look at after we cover two more effects.

Stat Boosts in Battle Some weapons, like the Forj Tempered Machete, will boost your pet’s stats during battle every time you use them. So if your pet has 50 Strength and uses a weapon that boosts Strength by 25, then after 5 turns they will deal damage as if their Strength was 175.

These boosts do not stay after the battle has ended, however, so you still need to train your pet!

As always, your opponent may have weapons that boost their stats too, like the Dust Bunny above, which can make them very dangerous after just a few turns. Be wary of them!

Critical Hits Finally we have the very basic bonus effect of a Critical Hit. Scoring a Critical hit (or Crit) will double your damage for that turn, and is often shown near the top of your battle flavor text.

The chances of you or your opponent scoring a Crit are tied to your pet’s Speed (though we can also use a certain Mod crystal to increase our chances). Pets with lower Speed than the opponent will receive more crits and only have a 10% chance to deal one of their own. On the contrary, a pet that is faster than their opponent will never receive a Crit, and will deal them more often.

As you can see, our weapons are already quite powerful, but we can make them even better by modifying them with special items known as Modification Crystals. Read on!

3.5 Modifying Weapons and Single Use Items

If you’ve gone past 10 wins on some opponents you may have picked up some pretty Crystals as part of your loot. Or you may have noticed the Parched and Blessing of Natural Armor Crystals in the Battle Shop.

So pretty!

These are Modification Crystals (often called Mod Crystals, or just Mods) that you can attach to your weapons to give them extra damage, defense, or Blessings and Curses. The power of the Mods you can earn from battling opponents increases with difficulty - so Easy opponents will drop the weakest crystals, while Impossible opponents will drop the most powerful. You can also buy them from User Shops if you like.

You can find a full list of the different crystals and their effects in ’ beautiful The Guide to Mod Crystals, but here are some that are commonly used/recommended.

> Crystals 10% chance for the Parched Blessing, which prevents Freezing for 5 turns

10% chance for the BoNA Blessing, which prevents Stealing and Freezing for 3 turns

2:dmg🔥 3:dmg:magma: and 8% chance to inflict the Singed Curse for 5 turns (3:dmg🔥 6:dmg:magma:)

5% extra chance of a Critical Hit

Weapons that can be modified will have Mod Slots, like our trusty Pea Bomb here.

Once you have some crystals you can start to power up your weapons by heading to your Armory, and clicking on the Modify Your Weapons button at the top. [box=orange]You will need to have the Mod Crystals in your Inventory, and the weapons in your Armory, before you can modify them.[/box]

Once there you’ll see a list of all the crystals and weapons that you have on hand. It may be a long list, so you can hide weapons and crystals you don’t want to use yet with the ‘Hide’ links.

Under each Crystal you can see the effect it will add to your weapon. In this case an Earth Brilliant Crystal, that adds damage and has a 4% chance of Cursing the opponent, and some Parched Baguette Crystals, that also add damage and have a 10% of giving us the Parched Blessing.

To add Crystals to your weapons simply drag each Crystal to the ‘Empty Slots’ (there will be a confirmation popup for each Crystal you place). You can also overwrite any greyed out Crystals that are already attached, though this will destroy the previous Crystal!

> Alternative Method (Many Weapons / Touchscreen Friendly) If you’re on a touchscreen, or just want to quickly add a single Crystal to a weapon you can click the Crystal in your inventory to use the ‘Modify Weapon’ link.
Then you simply place it on the weapon you want, or replace another crystal with it, again you will have a confirmation popup.

Once you are happy with your changes simply hit ‘Apply Modification Changes’ at the bottom to save, and ta-dah!

Our Pea Bomb now deals an extra 5 icons (and a chance to Curse), and our Pistols will give us our anti-freeze blessing 19% of the time, and also deal an extra 8 icons.

Higher Tier weapons will often have more Mod slots for us to alter so find and collect as many different crystals as you can, and customize your weapons to do whatever you need!

Equipping Potions and Other One Use Items There are a few interesting items you can manually equip to your pet so they can bring more into battle! There are items such as Life Death Shard, Glaciating Pylonic, and Acidic Throwing Vial that you can give to your pet to use one time in a battle. Once used in battle, it is gone forever. But you can stock up on a lot of these and just equip another one.

You can equip one of each of these single use items to your pet via your inventory, so if you want to equip all the throwing vials, you may do so. You cannot bring five Acidic Throwing Vials into a battle at once though.

A new Section 4 will be coming shortly! Please hang tight until then!

-- Section 4: Strategy and Misc. Topics --

4.1 Opponents That Disable Things

Coming soon! Preliminary

Sometimes when you go into battle, you may notice something very off, such as your 100% freezer not freezing your opponent. We know some blessings can prevent freezing, but it's the first turn and it should be freezing them! Or you notice as you battle, you're losing too much health...none of your weapons that heal you normally are working, and you're not even cursed! What gives?

Well, when this sort of thing happens, it is a good indicator that the opponent has a certain battle mechanic disabled. An opponent like Daemon for example disables healing. No matter what you do, your phoenix quill will not heal you in a battle against her. This can be pretty difficult at times!

The following mechanics can be disabled for an opponent: healing, freezing, stealing, scrolls, curses and blessings

Sometimes an opponent only disables one of these mechanics, sometimes they can have multiple mechanics disabled! Jess' comprehensive opponents guide can shed some light on what your opponents have disabled. This way you can prepare your weapons accordingly and adjust to a different scenario. For example, with an opponent who has healing disabled, that means weapons that have a negative heal, such as Psycho Smasher Scroll, are not going to hurt you now when used. ;)

4.2 Notes on Abandoning / Transferring

Sometimes, you might want to start fresh, or even leave Subeta, but still want someone to take care of your battle pets so their legacy can continue on even without you. Others may train pets with the intention of re-homing to those who would rather adopt an already-trained pet, rather than raise their own from scratch.

There are, however, two restrictions to battling with transferred pets - A 30 day wait period, and a Stat Reduction Penalty for pets with high stats. These restrictions were put in place to discourage pet lending for major battle events, like the Gelatin War.

30 day Wait Any pet transferred directly to you from another user must wait 30 days before being allowed to battle, while a pet adopted from the Adoption Center will be allowed to battle right away.

Stat Reduction Any pet that is either abandoned to the Adoption Center, or transferred to another user, will have any stat over 2000 reduced by 10% (excluding Level and Intelligence). If only some stats are at 2000 or more, then only those specific stats will be reduced; any lower stats will remain the same.

While you still can, of course, gain a battle pet in this way, you do rob yourself of the valuable learning experience that the beginning opponents provide, not to mention the time you would have had to save for weapons - buying a set for Tier 9 is more expensive than Tier 1 or 2! You also lose the satisfaction of having trained for and beaten everything to a pulp yourself, which we all know is the real prize 😉

4.3 Battle Formulas

If you’re still wondering how exactly your Strength and Defense affect your damage and blocks, this is the section for you. Be warned that there is maths involved (though nothing too complicated), so if that really isn’t your thing feel free to skip this explanation - all you need to know is that bigger numbers are much better. 😉

Our damage and defense are determined by two formulas; the Attack Per Icon formula, and the Block Per Icon formula. This means that for each Icon that our weapons deal or block, our pet will deal or block a certain amount of Damage.

Here are our (mercifully) simple formulas.

Attack Per Icon (API) (also called 'Damage per Icon')
Block Per Icon (BPI) (also called 'Defense per Icon')
Not too hard, right?

Note that our API formula divides the square root of our Strength by more than the BPI formula does our Defense, something that becomes important when planning our pet’s final stat build (see the next section).

These formulas also apply to our opponents, so we can easily (with a calculator of course) find out exactly how much damage they can inflict with their weapons.

To look at these formulas in action we’re going to use Tarrant and Vryce, who have very different stats, along with a Bronze Clockwork Grenade and a Chimerical Cloak to demonstrate just how significant that difference is.
Using our formulas we can calculate that Tarrant has an API of 14.31, and a BPI of 15. While Vryce’s API is 6.46, and his BPI is slightly higher at 6.78.
> maths Tarrant API = (square root of 3610) / 4.2 API = 60.0832755 / 4.2 API = 14.3055417, or 14.31 after rounding

BPI = (square root of 3600) / 4 BPI = 60 / 4 BPI = 15

Vryce API = (square root of 736) / 4.2 API = 27.1293199 / 4.2 API = 6.4593618, or 6.46 after rounding

BPI = (square root of 736) / 4 BPI = 27.12933199 / 4 BPI = 6.7823299, or 6.78 after rounding

If then, they were to attack each other with their Grenade and Cloak, this is what would happen:

Tarrant would deal 401 damage with the Grenade, and block a total of 600 damage with the Cloak And Vryce would deal 181 damage with the Grenade, and block 271 damage with the Cloak

This would result in Tarrant losing no health, since he blocked for more damage than Vryce could inflict. Meanwhile Vryce would lose a total of 130 health, since his low defense could only block 271 damage.

> maths again Plus or minus 1 point, since I did some early rounding 😉

Tarrant Grenade Damage = 14.31 API x 28 icons Grenade Damage = 400.68, or 401 after rounding

Cloak Block = 15 BPI x 40 icons Cloak Block = 600

Vryce Grenade Damage = 6.46 API x 28 icons Grenade Damage = 180.88, or 181 after rounding

Cloak Block = 6.78 BPI x 40 icons Cloak Block = 271.2, or 271 after rounding

Final Outcome Damage to Tarrant = 181 damage - 600 blocked Damage to Tarrant = 0 health

Damage to Vryce = 401 damage - 271 blocked Damage to Vryce = 130 health

Aren't you glad that all this gets calculated for us?? 😂

Even though they were using the same weapons we can see that their stats made a huge difference to the outcome. In fact, Tarrant could use a tiny 12 icon block and still take no damage from Vryce’s attack, which is why training our stats should always be our top priority!

4.4 Planning Your Final Build

Overall, an evenly built pet is still sort of viable despite power creep over the years and I do recommend it if you are starting out. A broad armory and consideration of a slight uneven build (one that favors high HPs and Str that is a greater than Def and Spe combined (HP = Str > Def = Spe)) might be the better build to start out with to see widespread success early on.

However you wish to train your pet, keep in mind of how the level stat affects the length of each training session (higher pet level = longer training times). Regardless of which you choose to do, ultimately, there will come a point where the training center will be obsolete and your pet will be competent enough to branch out into any build they so desire.

Use of leeches to lower the main 4 stats or stat boosters to raise the main 4 stats are crucial in curtailing your battle pet's build and your own experience of the hobby.

4.5 Further Help and Fun Stuff

Tips for success:

  • READ TO YOUR PET. More intel means more AP to use more scrolls. This is critical.
  • Train and gain points in stats every day. Whether that's through the Training Center, spending EXP or using a stat booster, your pet needs to earn at least 1 point in a stat every day. It will add up before you know it.
  • Pay attention to your opponents weapons! You can't always win by bruteforce. You have to change up the weapons you're using against various opponents. You don't want to bring a pure ice blocker when your opponent does no ice damage.
  • always try! Even if it doesn't seem like your pet can beat an opponent, try. You might be surprised.

Question on increasing AP... What is the best cheapest way to increase AP? (not with book reading) and is there a cap on AP? Thanks!

No current cap on AP...but theres an unintentional cap from scrolls crashing at a certain amount..

There really isn't a cheap way to increase intel. You can get it from your pets job randomly but pretty much tomes will be your cheapest guaranteed route (after you've read all books up to that price point)

Thanks for answering that! I think I'll add that to my guide, since I had no idea about that. Never thought about if scrolls were capped or not. xD

Thanks! Interesting about the scroll glitch The tomes from the Mage that you can get from turning in amulets, correct? The Mage does not like me, turned in around 8 or 9 amulets and no tome, ugh... lol

Yep - those tomes :P.

There's some other intel boosters but there's so many tomes available any given day the cost is pretty standard and a good price point to place a sP cap on what you'd pay for the others.
Guide to Stat Boosters Take a peak at the other intel ones.

Your going to be paying over a mil for each intel point in the end game.

What number of scrolls are we allowed? Was it ever set?

I don't think a limit's ever been hard set yet. Bug referenced a nonprohibitibe number like 100 but I haven't seen any follow ups.

the scroll limit varies depending on what scrolls you use. Things start to uncheck themselves / crash in the 40-60ish range. I havent' checked this in months but I assume it hasn't changed.
