Okay! You did answer my question. Thank you.

I have a question about whether something is a recolor or edit.
In the intro to CWs page it says "You can change the color of an item, the pattern of an item, or add any unique textures."
I'm wondering what unique texture means VS the next section that says
"What if I want to add, change or remove some features of the CW?
Any changes to the shape or form of the item are called edits. This includes any changes to the lineart (outline) or silhouette of the item. These must be submitted as entirely new items."
And the example it provides really is a huge difference that changes the style of clothing completely. vs
Ultimately my question is like this, vs is this an edit or a recolor? I see a lot of CWs with studs and hanging strings like this, and I was wondering if that was significant enough to be an edit or just a recolor? I'm thinking edit but I don't know, so I'm asking.
That's a great question, and it is honestly sort of a grey area. With those dresses, I would have considered them a recolor just because the edits are SO subtle. I'll add this to my future to-do list as something to try and give more clarifying examples of!
I have been slowly going through my remaining designs & recolors after a hiatus I took this year and I recently discovered I have an unsubmitted design that I commissioned sometime before my hiatus but the artist for the design has left the site (self-froze) before I came back from my hiatus and I just wanted to check what the current rules about submitting designs by frozen users are? I'm a bit hazy with the rules since I've come back from my hiatus. I feel like there used to be a rule about not being able to submit designs by frozen users, I just can't remember where it was.
Thanks for the assistance.
I'm going to add this to the FAQ today (along with a few other things), but! If a user self froze and has no warnings for art theft or was previously banned from CWs, it is okay to submit items by them (if they gave you permission to do so). If a user has been frozen for rule-breaking OR has any art theft warnings/an active CW ban when frozen, you may not submit items from them.
I hope it's ok to ask here instead of a ticket. I have and I requested edits with similar CI's but different edits. Do I submit these as recolors or as a "new" cw? A few friends also have this question since they also have done the same where the custom image is similar but a different edit of the custom wearable: A different item like my penguin and chick, and a different image on the custom image.
cws and cis

I’d also like this rule to be clarified as I have some items where lineart will be edited and I’m unsure if this counts as a new CW or not. My understanding from before was that if lineart is changed and it’s not just a recolor it has to be submitted as a new item, but I’m unsure if that’s still the case.
I'm really interested in this too. You've seen the horns I've released. They have one piece of line art change. I did submit them as new CWs, like before. I wonder though, with the system being so new how many people could be submitting a bunch of simple line art changes and paying full price if they've changed. I'm a nobody and even I've thrown out 3 colors of each design. I can't imagine how many recolors/simple changes releasers and artists like you have put through.
As an example and [Item=Flirty Horns of Sweet Tarts] I've got a few colors of each out now, but the only change is the heart/snowflake.
I'll give a detailed answer soon (at work!) But - the price doesn't change whether it's submitted as a recolor or a new item, so that part doesn't make a difference.
Consider me properly doofus'ed, see what I get for opening my mouth before rechecking my facts? Um, I'll be over in the corner pretending not to exist (Thank you Jessi for the answer, I mean that!)
Thanks for your patience! The past few days of work were really rough.
I have been hemming and hawing about this because I don't think it makes sense for things like the sweaters holding different animals to NOT be considered recolors. It's hard to figure out a way to make it sound right in writing, haha. I would consider these sweaters to be recolor, because the basic shape is 100% the same - it's an 'internal' detail that is changing. I know this isn't particularly clear, but I'm hoping over the next few days I can get some visual aids to add to the FAQ that may better help define it.
Thank you so much for the answer to our question. It'll help for visuals for others who might not understand as well. Thank you for taking the time to look into this for us :). (and I hope work gets back together for you)
IMPORTANT
I thought this was clear, but I'm concerned now that it's not. So I want to state it again and make sure everyone is aware of this.
If you did not draw or recolor an item, you cannot put yourself down as the artist.
I know some of you have permission to recolor items from other artists (like if they left the site, retired from CWs, sold you their .psd files, etc). In this case, if YOU did the recolors, you can put yourself down as the artist -- but you need to include in the submission notes that so-and-so was the original artist. Likewise, if another user recolored it for you, you may put them down as the artist, but the submission notes still need to clarify that so-and-so was the original artist.
However: If the original artist did the recolor for you, you CANNOT put yourself down as the artist just to claim a lower-priced artist copy because they are not on site.
If you have been doing this, please stop. If you are thinking about doing this, don't. If you've done this and plan to keep doing this and we find out, you will receive a warning. Falsifying the artist information is not allowed
The artist listed on the item must have had something to do art-wise with said item. Even if the artist has quit the site or is frozen, if they did the artwork, you don't get their copy. In the spoiler tag are examples of what is and isn't allowed.
SPOILER (click to toggle)
- drew a custom item for and then decided to quit the site. However, is still doing recolors for off-site. must still list as the artist, even if has quit. This is acceptable.
drew a custom item for and then decided to quit the site. However, has told they can do recolors of the item on their own if they wish. recolors an item themselves. They submit it with listed as the artist, and in the submission notes state that did the original but gave permission for them to recolor it. This is acceptable.
drew a custom item for and then decided to quit the site. However, has told they can do recolors of the item on their own if they wish. has do a recolor. They submit it with listed as the artist, and in the submission notes state that did the original and did the recolor (with permission). This is acceptable.
drew a custom item for and then decided to quit the site. did not give permission to do recolors. does it anyway and lists themselves as the artist. This is unacceptable and can result in an art theft warning
drew a custom item for and then decided to quit the site. is continuing to offer recolors off-site for . However, when uploads a recolor, they list themselves as the artist to get the discounted copy since doesn't play anymore. This is unacceptable and will result in an item denial. If it happens again, it will result in a warning.
Oh yikes. I cannot believe folks are doing that =/
this is very niche so i apologize BUT i do want to make sure with this situation:
i have recolours i've previously purchased and not yet submitted, and the artist has given permission to recolour these files. even if i take it upon myself to personally tweak/edit the recolours for tone & minor colour adjustments, i should still list the original artist and NOT myself, correct? unless i did anything MAJORLY different to the files or created NEW colours, i should list the original artist.
Actually, per above, it IS okay for you to list yourself as the artist in this case...
If anyone has any advice on how to make this clearer, please tell me, because I'm really not sure how else to word this.
OK that makes sense, thank you! the only part i was uncertain on was if it was an already established recolour; the rest is perfectly clear! edit: established recolour as in, i didn't make it, i just altered it! sorry for my not-so-great wording
I think your examples are crystal clear, . I hope that everyone abides by the rules moving forward.
whoa I didn't even know you could get an artist copy if you did your own art! why are some people so shady?
