Not sure if this has been asked or mentioned anywhere but I'm a bit stumped.
How does one go about naming the peoples of different lands? Is there a method to this... Like for example you're Canadian, you're from Canada. You're American, you're from the USA. I get that but there's so many countries (and not all of them are of this world if you're working on your own realm) how does one find the proper term for a person from a set country/land/world/ect.
I've ALWAYS had trouble with this... I feel ashamed.
- I just take the 'earth' approach and generally add -an or -ian on the end of whatever the country/land/continent whatever, they are from. Like, in my one story, the continent is Sanrin, so the people would be Sanrians, and the country the main characters are from is Jelaya so they are Jelayan. Of course, you can always go totally random and have people from a country called Holland be called Dutch people :P If it's a fantasy world of your creation, I don't think there are any 'rules' that apply except the ones in your head :P
Aha well that does make sense, thank you so much. Sometimes I just tend to worry... I like to try and make things make as much sense as possible... xD but either way thank you kindly! <3
I am usually off in some sort of fantasy world so I have to come up with these fairly often. I typically just go with whatever sounds the best (after doing a bit of research to try to make sure I didn't unknowingly come up with something offensive) but I recently came across this Wikipedia article url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demonym[/url] about demonyms... That is, the names given to natives or residents of a certain place. There are a lot of different versions, from adding suffixes to using the root word of the place name to demonyns borrowed from the native language or another language, for various reasons (but usually it's the language of a foreign invader). In other words, suffixes are a great place to start since they are the most common method here on Earth but if your characters are telling you that they are called something different, they are probably right. You just have to figure out why and you are good to go. XD
[edit] Also, in various fictional sources, I have seen or heard of a place having two names for the residents or natives... One from a native language that anyone not from there can't pronounce properly and the accepted alternate... Which may or may not be used to comic effect. So there is that too.
Arg, snag in my camp plans, my computer keyboard has decided to go crazy, my 0, p, caps lock, F3, and BOTH command keys aren't inputting properly. I have to use the screen keyboard view to use those keys. Will go in to try and get it fixed, but not being able to type the letter p is really going to put a damper on my progress. Also, without command, no copy/paste! I hope it's fixable, and that it won't cost me hundreds of dollars :(
Yikes... damn unruly keyboards... I hope you can get it fixed without costing an arm or a leg.... Best wishes. I really hate when things backfire, specially when it comes to writing, it's a huge sucker punch to the gut. :(
I am sorry to hear that! I use an external keyboard (and mouse) most of the time because I have fairly large hands and the factory installed keyboard is just too compact. My external keyboard connects with USB but I think there are some that are completely wireless. I don't know if that's an option with your device though. If it isn't, then I hope the repair to your computer isn't too expensive and that you are able to participate in Camp.
Since I am completely broke right now, I'd end up having to use a notebook for my writing if something caused both the factory installed and external keyboards to mess up. -doesn't even want to think about that- I also would immediately give up on the idea of Camp, because random notes are the only thing I like writing by hand. (Anything else and I become keenly aware of how often I go back and rework my sentences/paragraphs as I am writing.)
---edits--- Because I wasn't fully awake when I typed this and I didn't fully finish my thoughts... Though I thought I had. Yeah.
- I have a desktop computer, and an external keyboard that I can plug in, but the whole idea of having a laptop is that it is portable, I can take it to write-ins and stuff. I guess a notebook will work for those situations. But participating in word wars will be more difficult as it will be slower, and have no way of counting my words other than manually counting.
Ah. Okay. That makes sense. I only have the one laptop which is too big for me to think about hauling around.
A few years ago I thought about investing in a mini laptop for my writing, but I decided it just wouldn't be worth it for me. I don't often get the opportunity to write when I am away from my computer so the plain ol' notepad I keep with me works well enough.
Oh man I know how that goes.. I usually am forced to give up my room for company for a few days and yet I have free time and ... it's like inspiration, motivation, and everything in between just goes "nope not happening!" it never seems to pan out. :(
The past couple weeks have been one thing after another and I am so not ready for Camp NaNoWriMo. (Namely, my bed is still sitting in my office space - with its slanted floor UGH - because I was an idiot. I didn't read the installation guide for my new air conditioner and it fell out the window. Yay. Now I am waiting for somebody to help me put in the replacement, which my mother had to help me get and I feel awful about that.)
Inspiration is a lot easier for me to come by than motivation, which I am being reminded of right now... My muse is screaming at me to write and I just... I just want to scream. Today is especially awful, because I've had two really rough nights and I haven't really slept well in a week. (I got one night before disaster struck again and I must have slept 10 hours.) I am trying to get myself get organized at least. Because I need to write... When I write: I feel accomplished, because I have something to show for my effort. I feel relieved, after getting the words out of my head because then I don't have to worry about forgetting the idea anymore. I just feel better. Knowing that is what helps me push through and write sometimes when I am totally not in the mood. In fact, you could say that inspiration is my motivation to write and I have never, not once, had it be the other way round. I'm not always inspired though so I've been known to go long stretches (like the whole of December 2014 and the better part of February, March, and April... event season here on Subeta) without working on my writing much at all really. And I don't feel bad about that, not one little bit. In fact, I kinda miss not being inspired. It was less stressful. -sighs-
- I'm not ready either! Finally had a chance to take my computer in yesterday, and it's going to be at least three days, more if they discover more damage when they open it. And now there's all these new battle challengers and stuff..
After my minor meltdown yesterday, I feel better even though I had another night of 5 or so hours of restless sleep. I decided to be more proactive (because obviously waiting isn't working)... I've got two different people lined up to work on putting in the air conditioner so hopefully one of them will show up this evening. (My cousin was supposed to help me but he's out of town because of his job and has been since last week.)
I'm also about to clear out some clutter that has been interfering with my ability to easily grab my story stuff. It's stuff I need but there are other places it can live besides right in the middle of my currently super-crowded office.
- Well that's good at least. The computer store called me and said they didn't find any signs of water damage on the inside of my computer (though that doesn't mean there isn't any) But it looks like it'll just be the keyboard that needs to be replaced. The other thing that is really putting a damper on me being productive is this stupid heat rash that I got late last week and while it continues to look better everyday, it becomes more irritating every day!
The air conditioner is installed! -dances around- The air conditioner is installed! This time I think it is installed properly as much as the window allows.
Possibly TMI... So I am hiding it under here...
Summer is usually miserable for me, as I am prone to heat exhaustion (thus the necessity of air conditioning especially on the hot, humid days we have been having here) and apparently I am very attractive to fleas and mosquitoes. I also get very minor heat rash on a regular basis, but between the fleas and the mosquitoes I barely notice it. Last summer I had an unusually bad patch on my leg though and it was awful. For me, calamine lotion really helped... That, and cold wash clothes, once I realized what it was, to take some of the heat out of my skin. Most of the time I use Cortisone 10, but it didn't seem to phase the heat rash at all.
- I'm not entirely convinced what I got is heat rash, cus usually when I get heat rash it's a big red patch with tiny little bumps, and they usually go away in a day or so. This one has lasted over a week now, and the blisters were quite large and numerous, but everyone I talk to is like, it's probably just heat rash. Haven't had a chance to go to a doctor, and by the time I do, it'll probably be gone.
That doesn't sound like heat rash to me, actually. It sounds more like hives caused by an allergic reaction or skin infection. I've only had my general practitioner definitively diagnosis me with either when I was able to get an appointment shortly after the symptoms worsened, mostly because I was able to inform them of circumstances preceding and not because of the appearance. Skin reacts the same way to a lot of different conditions so it's usually difficult to diagnosis.
(Also, though I'm more inclined to think it is one of those two... It may also be a reaction to stress. I get what my dad called a "nervous rash" when I get very stressed out and my skin, which is sensitive to begin with, can get to looking pretty rough because of it.)
[edit] Well, I finally started to work on my Camp project and I already have 2,142 out of 25,000 words. Depending on how my writing goes tomorrow, I may go ahead and up my word goal by another 5,000 to 10,000.
Hey guys, sorry for randomly dropping in...
I was wondering if anyone would be willing to glance over at my pet stories to see if I'm decent enough as a writer to finally make profit on my favorite hobby... And by making profit, I mean write pet stories for others. :O
Here's a few samples:
