: Happy Birthday man!
thank you .... R u safe from the fires and did u have your power turned off

: We were safe from fires this year, though a couple of years ago, there was quite a conflagration nearby that threatened our safety.
Bass Lake Fire

Where I live, in the Glen Meadow Watershed, in the foothills of Central California, was surprisingly free of big fires this year, although the big power company did shut the power off is several areas of California, ours was not one of those areas. PGE doesn't supply the power to our area anyway.
I watched a documentary on the California fires, and from Montana we have had our shares of while fires. Remember the Yellowstone fire in 1988, well that same year my Dad had fire on his property and he lived out in a mountainous area.
One mistake many people made was thinking the fire isnt near me I am okay. They didnt understand, just a strong wind changing directions can /did put them in danger. Please for God forbid next wildfire season have essential packed by the door including important papers, food and water for family and pets. Have house pets crated and by door. Back your vehicle up to your home, it will shave minutes off the time you need to get to safety. Basically just keep safe as you can, and have battery operated radio, and walkie talkie for each family member to have if you have to use separate vehicles to leave. Be as safe a you can be.
BHH

: My Author had three very close friends who survived the California Firestorms last year, but only just barely. Celeste got out with her dog after making sure that all the patients in the Feather River Hospital in Paradise were evacuated and safe. She lost everything, she didn't have time to go to her house to get photos, medications, important papers or clothes, she fled the fire from work. She posted a terrifying video of the Skyway, jammed with cars, some on fire as she drove through and at the end of her video you could see an overheated, 500-gallon propane tank exploding right next to her car. It was like watching a traffic jam in hell.
Karen got out with a little more, she managed to get photos, papers, meds and clothes, but she only had thirty minutes. From the time that the fire started until she got the evacuation notice was thirty minutes! It only took four hours for the fire to completely destroy Paradise.
Art and his wife were evacuated from their Southern California home after a thirty-minute warning and they were ready, but they lost their home, a car and all their musical instruments, including an heirloom Steinway, and several rare tubas and trombones. They set their goats and chickens free and they all survived and returned after the fire died down. That fire ripped through their neighborhood in minutes.
Three years ago, my author's brother, who lives in the Napa Valley, waited to be evacuated by watching the fires race up the mountain where he lived. The airplanes that drop fire retardant and water began their drops right over his house and on several occasions "painted the place red." He took a picture of his truck covered in red retardant. They never got an evac notice because the fire was contained. But, for a while it was touch and go as there was only one road down off the mountain where he lives and it was crossed by the fireline further down the mountain at one point and had he been on that road, he may not have survived.
We take fire seriously here. We have no delusions that we are safe at all times. We know the risks of living where we do. We have evacuations plans, we have preparedness packs ready at all times and we talk about the risks of fire, flood, earthquake, threatening weather and Donald Trump frequently with our friends and family.
Preparedness is a state of mind, and not only for those of us who live in a place prone to many natural disasters, but for anybody. Look what happened to the humans who lived in Oakland Hills, or those people whose homes were destroyed by a giant gas leak ( hmm...another PGand E disaster....Hmmmm...)?
Y2K was real and it taught us a lot about what it means to prepare for the worst. You never know when you might need to leave your home in a hurry. There was an incident a couple of decades ago in Fresno when an airplane crashed into a busy street and the fire destroyed an entire apartment complex. Or there was the "News Year Flood of 1997" when warm rains melted all the snow up in the mountains and overflowed all the dams on the San Joaquin river and flooded out hundreds of humans living along the river. They had 2 hours to evacuate. Having a preparedness plan would have saved many people a lot of grief in that situation. How do you decide in 2 hours what to shove into your car?
Welcome ! Hope you have fun here with us :)
