I don't think anyone is in the wrong for solely logging in to preserve names though... under the current system, they are their names and they are absolutely allowed to just have them sit there and held away from other people.
I absolutely agree that the names are theirs. I just think that if you do not intend on playing the site again, then why keep them?

Honestly I feel this very simply becomes--why not? I know I have some names I would hang on to even if I stopped playing entirely, if only to have them on the off-off chance I came back.
And, like Sopheroo said, it does not encourage a great mentality. We want people to forget to log on, etc, so we can have their names. And I know in general no one means it poorly--they aren't around after all!--but it does feel bad and I can 100% see people logging on to prevent rewarding this.
And I agree it's very frustrating to be active and lose out on names to this! Being upset by it is super valid. It's lose-lose.
It really is lose-lose BUT I think changing the way names work on here will be good for the site. I love being the only one that has a name (and I have good names imo) and I stuck around and spent money to get these names and I am still excited that others can get the names they want. And I can get a few I have wanted xD

It's totally lose-lose, that's well put . I would definitely log in once a year just to keep my names. I don't mind other people using my names, I'd love to have non-unqiue names so I can see what other people do with them. But if I came back to see all my pets with _345 on them it would really suck.
Agreed! <3 There are a handful of names I would be excited to finally get. And I can stop feeling bad about having blank profiles for names I have lol.
I really wish the news on this would just pop up. I am so curious to see what exactly staff has planned and keep coming back to check if there are any news already. XD
we're doing it, friends!
we've finalized our approach and are working on the edge cases and how to handle all of the things that are sure to happen, but we've settled on what we're going to do. a lot of the programming is in place and it's a matter of tying up the lose pieces.
once we've got those things tightened up I'll post here / news with the decisions. I know it's funny when we make deadlines, but I'm hoping to have this at least posted about in the next week

Another week? My heart cannot handle that. faints
But really, thanks for the info, it's appreciated.
Thank you for the update, very appreciated. Interested to see what you guys have come up with.
I'm really eager to know what Subeta staff have in store for us--biggest news of the decade in pet site history, if you ask me lol
Forgot to ask...
Can you tell us if we are getting a change to a real non-unique pet name system, or if you decided for something else (like nicknames or so)?
oooo
The only reason I can't wait to know is because;
nicknames: go ahead now and change names to less desired ones
non-unique: hold off so I can have names I actually want
(Sometimes I wish I hadn't trained so many of my pets. If I hadn't spent so much on training them I'd have most likely adopted them out ages ago. Of my non-battle pets I have eleven that are tier 6, seventeen tiers 3-4. I never got around to the rest before I gave up training any pets.)

I'm so excited. I will admit, I started this thread reluctant about parting with some of my names. But now I am just so excited to see what everyone does with their pets. Heck, it might actually make me want to start playing again (I haven't really been active and actually playing in a couple years).
...
Maybe it's just a friend keeping names for someone. Maybe they had fond memories of the site and left because of six one way half a dozen another.
Biggest point, really, is: the behavior of keeping others from enjoying a thing is why I really hope subeta makes the right choice here. Logging in for the single purpose of keeping a name from anyone else is no worse than hating the idea of non-unique petnames. It's exactly the same behavior. It's mine and no one else can have it ever.
Let's hope for a change and not an illusion that would remove that, albeit not intentional but nevertheless, toxicity from names and just let people have what they want so they can happily log in and be creative and have fun. And log in. And stay. And join. And have cause to subscribe. And and, and.
Ps: mildly suspicious of the delay in a formal stance but still hoping subeta makes the right call on this topic so we can all actually enjoy this part of the site.
My position on "clearings are stupid" is less about people logging it once a year to keep their names, and more because I want Subeta to thrive, and for it to be successful, well, it needs an userbase. If I wish half of the userbase away because they have desirable names, I'm just potentially dooming Subeta, right?
But anyway, glad that we'll hear something Soon(TM)
Definitely agree. If the business model is literally one half waiting for the other half to leave/get frozen then, yeah no wonder sub isn't a petsite anymore.
But hey, I mean. I have an alternative that's got cute pets, unlimited (free) renames, and hundreds of (20 slots = cost of logging in so basically free) pet slots.... yet stupidly I'm still sitting here waiting... going please subeta let me name my pet what I want so I can pay for that and everything else.
I did used to be against non-unique names for years (fully admit because I was being selfish) up until earlier this year when all the good points being raised here and in other threads changed my mind. Namely the current climate of other petsites, how it turns away new users, etc.
I never realized how hateful the whole "wanting people to leave so you can get their names" is, and ashamed that I've thought that while looking at names too. It really isn't a good culture for subeta, especially when it's struggling for players. Thank you for pointing that out. I hope more people who were against this will change their mind like I did.
And I do hope they implement fully non-unique names and not nicknames, otherwise, what in the world actually is the point? After years of adapting to alternate naming, I would just continue with that method alongside stalking the real names. It would change nothing.
