We had planned for our non-unique name solution to go out with our revamped subscriptions (mentioned here) which have been put on hold as we try to make the process smoother.

What we'd like to do is have a nickname system, that can be linked to and displayed on profiles, as well as the 'original' name.

So I could have the original unique name 'Basilby' but his nickname would be 'Basil' and he would be linked to something like users/rah/pets/basil rather than his original name which would be users/pets/basilby. I could display pets by their nicknames on my profile, that's the hope, anyway!

Still working on it, tying it in to various parts of the site and seeing how well it works. It's still up there in my list of important things!

- It's what I've asked for, we are still deciding on the details! Money will be involved with the changing of nicknames, whether it be its own transaction or tied to a subscription, that's something we're still working on.

- I'd like it to work as an 'instead of' thing. Another word for it I guess could be a display name? I've been told it seems possible but I don't want to confirm 100% because, well, we've been down that road before on enough things that ended up not working out. STILL VERY HOPEFUL.

- If i'm understanding you correctly, then yes that's a good analogy that they'd be like a name custom overlay.

- It's more keeping in mind those people that would be very upset about losing their 'original' name. There will still just be the one person who can link the name without going through the username link first.

Also just to note, I did say that money would be involved in the changing of nicknames - not the creation of them! And also just tied to subscriptions in some way, I was thinking more a free name change(or multiple) with certain subscriptions. Plenty of tweaking still to be done, I really just wanted to update this thread with some information that it's not been forgotten and is being worked on!

- it can be quite difficult to give information that informs and satisfies while still in progress! I really didn't want to come here this time just with a 'we're still working on it!' line, but of course giving only part of the picture has its own downsides and can often be read as worst-case scenario.

- Oh no, names once there are to stay! (unless you want to change them)

- we've done private feedback before, that's something I could look into :)

we've finalized our approach and are working on the edge cases and how to handle all of the things that are sure to happen, but we've settled on what we're going to do. a lot of the programming is in place and it's a matter of tying up the lose pieces.

once we've got those things tightened up I'll post here / news with the decisions. I know it's funny when we make deadlines, but I'm hoping to have this at least posted about in the next week
