That makes sense. What other dead cat related items are there?
These were also the comments that helped me: "I love the idea of Mathis seeing someone hurt an animal and going complete John Wick on their ass."

So I'm still confused, what exactly is the solution?

Is it just having a dead minion attached and losing a battle? Because some people said that wasn't working...
And I still don't get the connection between the dead minions and losing, like you're not losing because of the minion, so why does that matter? What exactly is his fear/thing he hates? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. No wonder I couldn't figure it out at all.

Simply having a dead minion and losing didn't work for me. I just kept losing without changes

Fish Bones, but I haven't changed it, it didn't work on the first few tries and I did no changes after that

I've done everything listed above so far, and I'm still not getting him as a challenger. I've battled and lost 10 times. I guess I'll keep battling...

I've been working under the assumption that unlocking him had to do with how you treat your friends, and in this case it's referring to our pets. So I was looking for ways to be "mean" to them, be a bad friend in order to pick a fight with Mathis. And I thought it was pretty awful for me to send a Tier 1 pet up against a strong opponent in the Coliseum. Giving dead minions to our pets seems kind of mean, in a way. Reminds me of some old, awful dog training advice I once heard.

Did you lose with that pet and is it your active pet? Makalu was my active pet at the time I got him. I did it just in case but that might be an actual requirement

Weapons don't matter. Hitting or not doesn't matter. Pet tier doesn't matter.
If it's not working for you, it appears that repeated losses will get you there.

Maybe the dead minion has something to do with his past? He got so caught up in battles and or work that he neglected a pet, it passed away and he has felt guilty ever since... so it is something he tries to avoid now?
I dunno clutching straws here.

Try the zombie kitten, that was the original item I used
So then having an active pet has nothing to do with it. I was doing a lot of trial an error with her, that's why she has so many losses so maybe it is number of battles related
How many battles do you have with you pet that unlocked him?
Does Tier matter? Hanuel has the Zombie kitty right now...and do I need to use low tier weapons?
: It doesn't matter. I used T6 with my reg T6 set.

What I did
Gave Dominant Tier 10 a Fish Bones...
Made Dominant my active pet...
Picked Maleria's Familiar as the challenger I wanted to lose to... (Since I had already done so a few times last night while I was trying to figure it out...)
For the first fight I had his pets as Dominant's friends and had a pending friend's request with him.
After reading a post here though, I removed his pets from Dominant's friends and cancelled the friend's request...
I lost two more times before he popped up.

not sure, people did try with different tiers from what Ive seen, I used t1 because its my Hipottu which i thought maybe has a connection but it didn't.

Yeah, IDK those explanations sound like kind of a stretch. I guess we'll see once his fear comes out later this month. I still think it's a weird solution though.

Gonna try in a bit. Are we sure it has to be a cat-related minion or is it any dead minion? I'm still not 100% sure about that part.

I racked up quite a lot of losses trying to figure it out. After I added the minion, it may have been about five losses or so? I honestly can't recall the exact number.
I only took two losses with Jackals and his dead minion, but he wasn't my active pet so that probably skewed things.
