Server Issues
Resolved - We&;ve pushed final changes to the servers and rewritten a part of the new donation code and think we&;ve found the culprit.
Sep 12, 12:11 EDT
So, if we are to go with what the status site says, no one from staff is doing anything to deal with the lag and errors that have been occurring since 12:11 EDT... is that right?

We're aware of the degraded performance :)
💖 ✨ 🤗
I think the point was that in the "Past Incidents" section, it says that the server issues have been resolved when clearly they are not.
I don't get why the staff STILL hasn't learned to use the news (or that blue bar thing) as a space to tell users what's happening. It would have taken all of 30 seconds to put something like "We're aware of the issues. Please check the status site [link] for updates".
I had no idea there was a link in the footer because you never advertised it. I had no idea there even WAS a status site because you never advertise it! Talk to your userbase!
I've browsed through many posts but have not been able to find a clear answer to a few questions.
What makes the site dysfunctional during almost every planned event?
How is the server strain issue (especially during events) going to be resolved in the future?
Will Subeta enter into future events with the 'We can fix problems on the fly' mentality or will the same issues (that cause the site to go down) be addressed before initiating a plot?
I'm most definitely not the only one who loves playing Subeta. It's challenging, fun and emulates real life in many ways. This is the reason why it disturbs users like me when things aren't running smoothly. It's no secret the time and effort put forth to run and manage this site are gargantuan. It's got to be frustrating at times yet immensely satisfying knowing ideas and hard work has produced an entire online world with so many loyal followers. I'm old enough to know not everything is simply cut and dry but I, for one, would appreciate a better explanation of what exactly the problem is with the site - other than 'We're aware of the problems' and 'We're working on it'. Is it the coding? Is it the servers? Don't be ashamed or scared to admit the problem, even if it's human error. Maturity and elegance never happen without growing pains.
I really would like to know why staff continually make events that require massive amounts of refreshing to the point that the site goes down, is nothing but errors, etc. Its bad enough with things like flowers and kissing and dancing. But the donation drives have been insane! We're already putting extra strain on the servers having to F5 constantly to try and catch "activities". Then the donations just kick it into high gear. They're nothing but refreshing. Refresh to buy, refresh to donate, all day and night. Thousands upon thousands of refreshes and page views for vending, searching, buying, trading, organizing, adding/removing from shops or galleries or vaults, donating, checking progress. If you aren't refreshing or loading pages in some form you're not participating.
How did no one on staff think that this might not be a good idea? How did this get through every stage of idea, brainstorming, and approval? During the Sephora donations the site was nothing but 502s for the vast majority of time I was awake. Since I had nothing to do yesterday I was here all night with auto refreshers to buy and donate. The page titles were almost always 502 errors to the point that Chrome's most visited sites thing on new tabs thought Subeta's website name was the 502 error message. This isn't the first time that's happened, or the first event to cause it.
Its really hard to believe the constant oh we're fixing it, oh this server move will change things, oh this coding change will help. Even if those things make a small difference on the back end it looks exactly the same to us. Events are never without errors, lag, and downtime. Subeta is how many years old? Why does this always happen? I can't think of any similar sites (pet/avatar) that buckle the way Subeta does whenever an event happens. I don't know of any similar sites that have to have a dedicated status site because they have so many problems. Heck, I can't even think of a single non pet/avatar site that I know of that has a status site because they're so unstable.
I'm not even going to bring up the complete lack of communication. Everyone else covered that well.
I thought I would add my thoughts - I don't voice them very often (at least I don't think I do... :P ).
I really enjoy site events and really appreciate the time and effort that staff puts into creating them. Unfortunately, this is totally lost and forgotten to a lot of players when issues happen. Frankly, it sucks the fun right out of it. I'm sure staff is then understandably frustrated because there is a whole lot of complaining - in this case from both teams who feel it is somehow a disadvantage or unfair.
I'm already getting 504 errors and the site strain atm is low. I find it very annoying to have to slow down what I am doing to a snails pace and use only one tab and one click at a time to actually accomplish anything - I do multiple things at a time and immediately start getting 502 and 504 errors. I took a 3 year hiatus and imagined that issues would be fixed but have found they are not.
Lack of communication. I know this has been repeated time and again on this board but please, when there are major issues like glitches that affect an event for HOURS - address it. Apologize. Explain what happened, how it was fixed, what was done to remedy the situation so that everyone can see the actions and results taken. A team was held up due to a glitch for over 5 hours. Nothing was announced, no apology, no explanation of why the team was bumped up or how the new location was calculated. No apology for the lost hours and general affect on team morale. I can't speak for the other team, but I know if my team had won after the other team was hindered in such a fashion it'd feel like a hollow win. One of the benefits of Subeta is the positive small community feel. This is being lost as communication to the community wanes. There are now bitter feelings between teams, not because of anything that either team did but because of issues and no communication from the site itself.
Please, please, please work on these things so that we can thoroughly enjoy all the time and hard work being put in by the staff. We want to love and enjoy this event - it's just really hard atm.
Also, being aware of =/= doing something about: That was my point.
From what the status page is showing players, it appears that while staff may know that Subeta is running poorly (which would be evident to anyone trying to use the site to do quest or restock, but I digress), they aren't actively doing anything to fix it making the page fairly worthless.
Seriously, I may just have to avoid the site if we're going to have another item donation drive. How much longer is this going last?

Oh, that's what I thought it was. For some reason I thought I read that they were putting announcements in a footer and since that doesn't change I was confused. Nevermind me!
I also think it's kind of lame that staff was blaming most of the server errors on the item drives and people donating so much, and yet all of that is done with and the site still keeps crashing.
Staff: "Everything you need is on the status site, which has now been added to the footer."
Me: Experiencing some bad lag today, so I check the status site:
"Problem Loading Page"
slow clap
Now the irony is how many times the site crashed before I could get to his page to even type this B)
Seriously though, what the hell is going on?
You guys kept blaming the site errors on the donation drives, but that's over now and we're still getting a million gateway errors.
And the status site just says the same message about investigating for the past day, so that's pretty useless as far as updates actually go.
Come on staff, you usually do better about communicating. What's the problem now where you can't seem to do that effectively during this event?
No donation drive, no mass quests, nothing that would strain the servers and the site is STILL eating itself. This really, really should not be happening and again, no response or explanation from staff except "oops sorry (:"

lmao
To be fair, "omg there's NO extra strain on the servers" is wrong. There's still extra strain on the travelling step. People still have to refresh a bunch to try and catch activities. Obviously that's a LOT less strain than donation drives or mass quests but still. Its not a normal day.
(The site should still work though.)
I understand that much. But from some of the staff's comments, they made it seem like oh the errors are just because the mass donating puts a lot of strain on the servers. When clearly there are some other issues going on.
Also the fact that they still seem to be under-utilizing the status page.
honestly this whole status site is ridiculous. the only positive thing I can see that's different from yesterday is the little blurb about taking the site down. otherwise I don't need to know about what your individual servers are/doing, I just care about how you're FIXING them. And the facebook/twitter account linked have literally no information regarding anything about this either. and that's not even going into the whole "we won't post any news about anything because it changes" thing...
finally, with regards to the footer at all, my 15in LAPTOP screen is at 120% zoom and the text is still nigh unreadable, it's so small.

ahahaha EXACTLY! Okay cool we now know that YOU know that the site is acting up. ....Thanks? That doesn't convey any sort of information about why or what you're doing about it.
I don't know why I keep getting surprised by the lack of staff communication
lmao this is how I feel most of the time on threads like this. Like users opinions are getting dismissed entirely because "well this is how it is." [small]especially when talking to Keith.[/small]
you're a damn hero. Doin gods work and all that XD
[small]love that I got a forum post for badmouthing the site owner XD[/small]
