Omgoodness Holden, Cactus Wrens are the awesome! I call them 'crazy birds' because of they way they sound and move. They fling leaves, debris and even rocks with their bills to find bugs to eat. They hop around all crazy, run sideways, just so funny! I have lived around them for years and they still make me laugh every time. I really enjoy their company and they look like little bandits. LOL
I had lived back east for a bit and the one thing that I do miss seeing are the cardinals. So very pretty. :)
I would LOVE to see a eagle just hanging out!
I watch these guys everyday. :D These owls are about to branch.
They're so cute
Edit: Forum point - yeah
Yes! They're so pretty! And they always travel together which is so cute. We have a pair that I've seen on and off for a year and a half now and I always get super excited whenever I see them, to the embarrassment of my friends. :D
Lmao I got a forum point too!
In Central Texas: Turkey vultures. Turkey vultures everywhere. All day every day.
Every now and again, I see a Red Tailed Hawk in the sky, but most of the time it's vultures.
Also, lots of deer, raccoons, rabbits, and opossums, both living and dead. A lot of the times, dead on the side of the road. Which is why there are so many vultures. They're very hard workers.
I've also got to see some garter snakes and even managed to rescue a baby that was basking in the middle of the parking lot (I moved it to a bush).

I live in NW Oregon, about an hour from the coast. I live in a suburban/urban area. I have recently seen: Canadian geese, mallard ducks, teal ducks, pintail ducks, finches, goldfinches, european starlings (pretty but a nuisance), red-breasted robins, seagulls, sparrows, deer (usually staring from the side of the road), blue herons (all over the place!), garter snakes, squirrels. I used to live in the country/rural areas closer to the coast line, and I miss the larger variety of wildlife.
Living in the country in Ohio. We've got deer that show up in the yard fairly often, and of course raccoons, groundhogs and rabbits. We've got mourning doves, cardinals, blue jays and owls nesting in the yard and wood line. This morning I walked out onto the back porch and startled a groundhog into running out across the yard, scurrying for cover. It was so caught up in watching me to be sure I didn't chase it that it smacked headfirst into the side of the shed before diving for cover underneath.
On my drive into work I usually get to spot herons and kingfishers stalking the small ponds, crows of course and there's a nesting pair of bald eagles I sometimes see perching along the treeline. A flock of turkeys lives in the woods nearby, I sometimes spot them racing across the roads, and there's a small family of foxes that I absolutely squee over every time I spot one.
I haven't seen much wildlife since moving to this city but what I have seen has been pretty exciting because I'm living on a different continent than I used to and every animal I see is very different. Even the squirrels are really different than the ones I'm used to.
If I may ask, which continent did you live on? Which one do you live on now?
- I used to live in California, in the United States, and now I'm in Europe so I'm pretty far from home.
I used to live overseas for awhile. Lived in Germany. Most awesome place. In any case, there was a Rosengarten that I would go to like nearly every week and there were peacocks that roamed the park freely. Beautiful!
That's actually where I am now! :) I haven't seen any pearoosters yet but lots and lots of swans in every body of water I come across. Also the hooded crows are really fun to watch.

There are also foxes, coyotes, flying squirrels, various owls, and a host of other animals in our area, but you rarely, if ever, see them.
Oooh thank you for sharing those baby owls! It's a few weeks later and apparently they've come a long way. :D
What are your new squirrels like? I once had a roommate from Florida who had never seen fox squirrels before. She said they were freaky, and that they were like the size of human babies. Never thought of it that way before lol. They do get so fat living around college campuses.
Wow, lovely list! That's native America for you. I've also heard rumors about foxes and coyotes living in my area but never seeing them in person. I guess you have to be really lucky and in the right place at the right time.
The other day I saw a couple of northern flickers (which are like speckled woodpeckers) in a mating dance. They flitted around on the grass and also between branches, until they flew away. Makes me wonder if I made them too self-conscious. Just like every other human interaction I have lul ;_;
- These ones aren't huge or anything, haha, but they're this pretty red-orange color and have fluffy tufts on their ears? I think they're called the European red squirrel but I'm not 100% on that. They're very cute.
I did see coyotes once, so big I thought they were wolves, but there are no wolves in my area. I'm not a fan of coyotes - I'm 99% certain that they're the reason three cats I used to have are no longer with us...but those cats were ferals, so it's not like I could keep them inside.
Giant flying cockroaches, ants, and flies. Woo.
I really hate living in the middle of a huge city. I love wildlife, but I don't get to see any unless I drive at least an hour away. ;~;
I love them! They are really smart when it comes to food. Years ago I used to hand-feed this squirrel who'd visit my house. A neighborhood blue jay caught on and would watch whenever I went outside, hoping to get some peanuts.
Aw. Hope you get more chances to get out now that it's nicer. Do you have a lot of pigeons where you live?
I live in the 'burbs in Arizona, so I don't see too many different kinds of wildlife. Every time I go out though, I do see at least one wild rabbit hopping about. And a few weeks ago I saw a small group of coyotes crossing the parking lot I was in, I wish I had gotten a picture. There are always black birds around, though I don't know enough about birds to identify their species.
birds are amazing :D Blue Jays are just so pretty too, with their blue feathers. The other birds I see in my yard are Carolina Wrens and American Robins, both extremely common in comparison. I haven't seen the Blue Jay back since I wrote that post so it was more of a treat that I got to see it for a short time.
