Ones that you don't see mentioned a lot or maybe EVER but they're extremely good

Despite its sort of mixed reception, I 100% unironically enjoy Deadly Premonition and think its a really good game. It's charmingly weird and genuinely funny, and the characters are great and extremely memorable. It's a shame that it doesn't have more fans, although I guess I can understand why it doesn't have a widespread fandom considering the combat sections are hard to sit through (but that's not really SWERY's fault; combat wasn't even supposed to be in the game) It's basically a Twin Peaks video game though, so what's not to like!

The only mention of Heart of Darkness I've ever seen is from popular Youtubers who are also bad people playing them (probably because it's a difficult game, and they know frustration is entertaining to watch), and seems a little underappreciated compared to Another World. I've always thought the animations and environments were really cool. I've figured why it gets mentioned less than Another World is because it's sillier than the former, but it's a kids game (gruesome death animations aside), so give it a break! Speaking of the death animations, I feel like if that's the reason anyone knows about this game, it's usually because of that.

Both Cytus and Deemo are really good mobile rhythm games and have a LOT of good music in them. They're hard, but really fun to master. Deemo's actually getting a release for the PS4 too and Cytus has a sequel, although I've only played the first games because my tablet is broken so I can't play them anymore. :( I miss playing these games, lol

Also, it goes without mention to talk about the MOTHER of all great obscure games.... Yeah, that one by Shigesato Itoi. Yes, the one that isn't localized in America. The one that's everyone's favorite........ The one, the only......

ITOI SHIGESATO NO BASS TSURI NO. 1!

What, did you think I was going to say MOTHER 3 or something? Look, I love that game too, and the whole series but everyone and their grandma wanted to pick that as answer. Seriously, any series that has not one, but two characters in SSB is probably not THAT obscure.

Jokes aside though, MOTHER 1 gets the short end of the stick when it comes to the whole series even though the story is no weaker than the rest of the trilogy. If anyone has a complaint about the series, chances are it's going to be about MOTHER 1. Some people even advise others to skip it entirely and play the rest of the series. Where is the appreciation? :( (Wait, is it cheating to mention a game that's only obscure because it's the black sheep of the family?)

So, what is a fave game of yours that gets overlooked a lot?

I’m a really big fan of Fragile Dreams - farewell ruins of the moon. It came out for the wii in 2009 and though it never really got a lot of attention I thought it was really beautiful!

I’m also a fan of some games that aren’t regarded as great but they’re weird enough that they got my attention: illbleed, a really bad Dreamcast horror game, is one of my favorites. It’s absolutely bizarre. Another would be the D series. D and D2 are two completely different games that star the same main character, Laura, who the developer viewed as a ‘virtual actress’. She appeared in his games. D is locked on a two hour time limit I think?? And D2 is a survival horror game. Really weird but definitely worth a watch of a play through!

I'm not sure if 999 (Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors) counts as obscure since I see its series for sale all the time in game stores, but the fandom seems fairly small so I guess I'll count it? I haven't played its sequels yet but I thoroughly enjoyed its fucked up, absolutely gruesome nature, as well as its non-linear sense of time and space.

Also, it seems like a chore to find anyone who's played a Tales of game that's not Symphonia, Abyss, or Vesperia. Where's the Tales of Graces f love? Graces hands-down has the best battle system in the entire series, and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise. (Not really, but I do love it that much!)

Finally, I grew up playing the DOS platformer Commander Keen, and boy, do I have fond memories of dying every five seconds in those games. Seriously though, they were tons of fun, and Secret of the Oracle was my favorite by far. I own the complete series on Steam now, and I'd love to try finishing a CK game for once... if they would run properly on my computer. >:K

I don't know if this really counts as obscure but I absolutely adore everything about the indie horror game Ib. Several youtubers played it years ago but it has a special place in my heart, everything about it is amazing from the story and characters to the background music. The graphics are kind of old school and there's like 3 primary characters and about 8-9 different endings but I wish it had become a big thing. It's so good <3

Lost Kingdoms ( both the original and the sequal) for Gamecube. Even with it's control scheme I have fond memorys of it and the monster collection aspect of it is nice, plus From Software made it before the Souls series and it kinda shows some of that early stages of the difficulty they are known for.

Chrono Cross for ps1. This might be less obscure but the Chrono Trigger fanbase is kinda devided on it from what I've heard. I was drawn to it's loads of charactors though after getting the guide first ( used to own guides to read for enterainment before actually getting into gameing) and any game with a NG+ is a win for me as it adds to more playability.

Jade Cocoon for ps1. Another "monster collecting" game. The mechanics for fuseing are abit complex, plus tank controls ( But hey might get me used to playing RE and SH one day) but the soundtrack is catchy and the gameplay is pretty simple but fun. Shame I'm stuck on the last boss though >_<

If illbleed wasn't so rare now adays I would be tempted to own it if I ever got a Dreamcast XD, I've watched afew Walkthrews and the game's pretty fascinating.

Has all 2009 strains, all 2010 strains, all 2011 strains, all 2012 strains, all 2015 strains, all 2016 strains, all 2017 strains, all 2018 strains, all 2019 strains, all 2020 strains, all 2021 strains, all 2022 strains, All 2023 strains, all 2024 strains, all Vial strains, Biodoominessence, Batnip, Cakewalk, and Stalacbite,

Etrian Odyssey series, Zero Escape trilogy (999, ZLR, ZTD) and I guess most Japanese horror games like Tsugu no Hi [The Next Day] (a scrolling horror game that changes by day), Mirare [Watched] (literally the one that calls out players that constantly saves, this really made it memorable for me), Kiyoku Shoujo [Girl of Memories] (uses real footage sometimes which makes it spooky), Kai Shoukougun [Strange Syndrome] (a very long novel-esque RPGMaker horror game, it follows through Japanese urban myths that started turning to reality with a girl and a detective investigating the strange happenings ) and Wachtraum [Daydream] this game isn't scary but for people with phobia of extreme silence and white bg and black outlines (which I sadly have) it really turn your paranoia up to a thousand LOL)

OMG YOU KNOW 999? AHH OMG. I always thought it was obscure then Pewdiepie picked it up which gained some popularity hh. I still feel bad with how ZTD kinda ended in a rushed way tho.

I swear no-one ever talks about this game. It was my very first PS1 game I got for Christmas with the console. I've spent countless of hours playing it and still absolutely love the colorful and whimsical worlds and to this day I still haven't beaten it. The last few levels are hard!

FUN FACT: a used game store near me has a copy for $130. It's definitely way out of my budget but every time I go in I stare at it longingly!

I've seen it only once at a local used game store here and it was roughly 110$-130$.

I did get one rarer then that at the same store but only due to store credit ( ps1's Valkyrie Profile ) >_< but yeh..... out of my range for a game that's not going to be played in the near future. I've only went 100$ on collecter's edition stuff.

Edit I just got Illusion of Gaia and Heart of Darkness added to my game library recently ._.

The King's Field games by From Software are by far my favorite, not-well-known series... the PS1 ones are clunky but I still love them with all my heart. ;o;

Some other notable little known favorites of mine would be Legend of Legaia (PS1), Lux Pain (DS), Okage (PS2) and Robotrek (SNES)!

Turgor! Oh God, Turgor. I've never played and probably never will but I love it with all my heart and have no idea why. It's by Icepick Lodge, the group that made Pathologic (which is probably also obscure tbh), and is also known as The Void I think? It's on Steam and, honestly, I have no idea how to explain the plot. It's weird and has a lot of body horror kind of? It's so.. trippy. It gives me a vibe where there's a metric butt ton of symbolism that's just under the surface and just aching to be discovered that I, unfortunately, can't really interpret. Oh, and the game is also really hard apparently? So be careful if you do decide to play it.

Idk if it counts since they've got a new one coming out and it's looking so sleek and sexy and all, but Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines ♥. I'm one of those people who loves reading about tabletop games and watching other people play, but doesn't actually have the time or friendships required to play lol. So, I was obsessed with it. It was before we had Critical Role and all. Dark times. But I still love that game and can't wait for the new one.

Back in my day we didn't have shows where good-looking voice actors would play these games. We had to just play whatever video game adaptations we could get. By ourselves, in the dark, alone, and we liked it.

I had a friend who was really into Illusion of Gaia, but I never had a chance to play myself! (I couldn't borrow the cartridge and it wasn't available for rental.) Definitely inspired to seek it out now that you've reminded me!

My all-time favorite series is Lufia - in fact my Escalade, Sir Dekar, is based on my favorite character from the series! I still have some old carts, and I play them as often as I can... I really love them!

I don't hear many people talking about this game but Ghost Trick will forever be one of my favorite games!! I love the creative puzzle solving gameplay as well as the colorful characters and amazing plot writing! It's such a good "detective" game that feels like its fits right at home with the Ace Attorney series but has more "interactivity" in terms of gameplay style.

Omg I'm so glad I'm not the only one who felt like the last game was kind of clunky/rushed ;v; the story was still really interesting but I felt like the full 3d animations were a little awkward and that there were some confusing points in the plot that left me with a lot of questions haha. But otherwise I'm still happy they even got a 3rd installment to the series~
