So my boyfriend and I have this discussion a lot about how when you're young there are some words you READ before you've ever heard them ALOUD and so you tend to mispronounce them; sometimes even after years of knowing the correct pronunciation cause that's how it's always been in your head.

Some of mine are: "mishapen" (pronounced "miss-shapen," but I pronounced it "miss-haPPen")

And of course now I can't remember any others cause I usually think of it when I'm reading them but I know I have so many more!! Haha!

Anyway, what are some of yours?

I pronounce any word that starts with "H" as silent, Spanish speakng tendencies. I also pronounce "w"as "v". In some cases I do this arbitrarily, chair is che, door is doh, that's the schizophrenia talking. Though I'm used to people not familiar with Spanish to mispronounce my name, Germán.

[Edit] More recently I've been saying "ep" instead of happy. Partly from the first, and it was further abbreviated.

Old, and obsolete.

epitome! I always read it at the end of degrassi episodes "epitome pictures", and see eh-pih-tome and not eh-pih-toe-me. words are weird.

Oh man this happened so much when I was younger. Only one I can recall is the word ma'am. I saw it in some assigned reading book in elementary school, and mispronounced as "muh-am" until I heard someone say it aloud. Cringe.

Another one I remember my brother mispronounced after reading it in a Garfield comic was premise. He read it as "preh-mize." Lol.

As a kid I read "Kerfuffle" and it instantly stuck in my head as "ker-FLUFF-fle" .....which is so much more fun to say than ker-FUF-fle,

Deign - I always pronounced this is my head as rhyming with line (dye-n) but in reality it's dane. I still have trouble not reverting to the way i originally thought it was said. XD

I just learned this a few days ago and apparently gibberish is pronounced with a soft G and not a hard one. >_> Like "jibberish".

That sounds wrong to me.

oh man me too!! That's one I forgot until I just read your post hahaha!!! I read aloud to my boyfriend sometimes because it helps him sleep and I said "epih-tOme" one time and he was like "What was that word you just said?" The funniest part was that I had heard it pronounced correctly and would pronounce it correctly when just speaking about it, but for some reason I guess I thought they were two separate words lol

I struggled with the sound-it-out method, which was pretty embarrassing in kindergarten and first grade. My spoken vocabulary was always a few grade levels ahead though; I would usually recognize the word once the teacher finally said it and often I would even know the basic definition. Realizing I actually knew the word would just make me feel stupid, which is kinda backwards... The general attitude of the people at that school did not help.

Two words I know I'm saying wrong (because I regularly get corrected on them by my well-versed mother): Queue - I always say kw-AY instead of kyu. Mischievous - I pronounce it mis-CHEE-vee-us instead of MIS-chuh-vus 90% of the time.

Even though I know I am saying these words wrong, they are kinda fun to say the wrong way so I haven't really tried to correct myself. LOL

Fun fact: Because I have mostly learned my pronunciations from hearing other people, I've ended up with a few British pronunciations mixed in (I used to watched BBC a LOT)... Even though I'm not technically mispronouncing those words, I do get some weird looks from my family and neighbors.

thats AMAZING! I watch a lot of David Attenborough documentaries (any/all I can find I should say...) and the Great British Bake Off, and Brits pronounce some words differently, and it started out that me and my boyfriend would just kind of chuckle at the differences except now we have added some to our vernacular like "Slothe" (slow-th) instead of sloth, and Sir David says hurricaine like "hurr-i-kin," which we use. Also "maths" as a plural lol.

I also totally just remembered another one that I mispronounce! Gravely, I always read it as "gravel-ly" in my head instead of "grave-ly."

Normally I've always been good with language, so I can't think of many examples of this, but I thought the word "expedite" was "expediate" for the LONGEST time. Like, I didn't get that correct until a few years ago, and that was only because I was trying to google the definition.

As for the thing about mispronouncing "mischievous", that's a super common one. Mispronouncing it as "mis-CHEE-vee-us" is so common, I even see it in seemingly professional productions like games and tv shows. So you're not alone :)

For some reason, I pronounce salmon as "sal-mon". Even though I always hear it without the "l" and know I'm mispronouncing it, I can't get it through my head that the "l" is supposed to be silent. :x

I pronounce milk as melk. don't know why although that's actually how you say milk in dutch but that's got nothing to do with why i say it. and i pronounce burgundy as bur-GRUN-dy because i didn't really encounter it often as a kid and only saw it written down once or twice and misread where the r was. didn't realise either of these were wrong for a long time. i still refuse to pronounce milk the proper way coz i think it sounds weird when i say it but strangely not when others say it. burgundy i'll pronounce the proper way around people i don't know but around my family i'll still say burgrundy just for fun.

I'm pretty lousy when it comes to pronouncing things, tbh. Only from reading this thread did i realise it's "mis-chuh-vus",,, lmao

I always read "expertise" as "eks-per-tise", and for the longest time "hurr-th" instead of "harth" for the word "hearth". And I can't for the life of me pronounce "asked" for some reason . I always instinctively pronounce is like "axed".

This might be a common one but apparently, people say caramel as care-a-mel and I've always pronounced it as car-mel.
