We have now 3 options: None, Male, Female. I would be so happy to see the a 4th option: Custom Gender.
I think it would be wonderful to let many user express their identity on Subeta. I see Subeta as an open-minded place where everybody can feel free to be who their are and express it.
Update: The "Other" option that has been suggested is fine with me and understandable too.
It's always bothered me to see only 3 options for gender, it's time to change it!!!
On FB for example, they have this option and it's very successful and made so many people happy!
So what do you think? :)
I assume any user-input would be censored if neeeded, so I don't really see any reason we shouldn't have this.
I don't see the harm in it, and anything harmful/questionable can always be removed just like anything else.
oh I'd love it! But I can see some drama caused by it. Like... some people would use it as a joke, and a other group of people who use it to express their actual non-binary gender would feel offended and start a very ugly discussion....
this was suggested back in september.
I'd definitely support Other, but I'd think having a write-in field would be too much potential for drama.
My opinion is still the same as in September, no support for a write-in field. An "other" option is more than fine.
echoes Sopheroo. My opinion is the same as when I posted in the September thread. I'm fine with an "other" option, but not a write your own field.
If there was a write-in space, I'd just put penguin and proceed to argue why penguin is my gender.
I'm kidding, btw.
I support having an other selection. Monitoring what people type in seems like too much of a hassle and waste of time imo.
come on guys. we don't live in stone age anymore to stuck with only the male, female and other gender. let show the world how progressive we are. how cool it is to be identified with dragon or tupperware gender!
A fill in the blank would definitely cause unneeded drama. I can see people actively abusing it.
"Other" would be a nice option, and people can always use their descriptions to specify pronouns :)
I whole-heartedly would support 'other' as an option; the write-in unfortunately has too much potential to backfire, at least at this point in time. i think the user description is still probably the best place to go into personal detail, since that's where folks will likely end up specifying their pronouns anyhow!
as it is right now, currently i just set mine to 'none' to signify 'other', although tbh i'm agender so it honestly serves it's purpose for me just fine LOL but that's not the case for everyone sadly!
I'm fine with the Other option too.
I understand the fear of the drama or the jokes. but hey guys! we are not at the 90s anymore! They can block all the "bunny, dragon" and the rest of the jokes it can give "ERROR: Bunny is not a gender!" and only accept words from a specific list.
Support. I don't see why Subeta should have to deny genderqueer/nonbinary/etc. users the ability to proclaim their gender just because of the potential of a few users abusing a fill-in-the-blank gender option to make fun of it. Let 'em yuk it up and they'll get bored after awhile. If someone keeps doing it, users who are bothered by it always have the option to block them.
I would be wary about allowing free-reign with a a fill in the blank option. On some level, I'm fine with adding in "other" as an option (I'm surprised that is hasn't happened already), but I'm not wholly comfortable with lumping in all non-conventional genders as just "other". What we need is a more comprehensive drop-down list to choose from, which can allow users to be as open or as quiet about their gender as they like.
In the meantime, if people really want to go into specifics, the profile allows you to add in as many write-in boxes as you desire (although it isn't quite the same as being able to put it next to the official gender heading).
People using Star/Stars/Starself as pronouns are infinitely more damaging to non-binary fellows than anyone on this thread. A star is not a gender. I personally find nounself pronouns a mockery of trans people's struggles.
