I brought up the idea on the pet slots thread last month, and I'm not giving up on it!

But

Collective sitewide challenge LASTING AT LEAST ONE MONTH where the site must do as much quests as possible. I don't know how many quests are done in a day, but my original idea was 1 million quests / 45 days

We're talking quest point giving NPC quests, meaning Wizard, Saggi, MoNori, Maleria...excluding Carl So, I think it's 9 questgivers altogether? I'm not sure, I need to double check.

For each milestone (50 000, 100 000, 250 000, 500 000, 750 000, 1 000 000), everyone that did a fair share of effort(like not just one quest, clearly, but not an absurd amount either) get a boon. Either a title, a rereleased retired item or something. No new items, just old stuff.

And, if we manage to hit 1 000 000 quests in the period or time (or whatever staff decides is the top tier, idk how many quests are done in a day, probably a friggin lot), people who again did a fair share of effort get a loyalty totem, an achievement and a nice title for their collective effort.

No teams. No high scores. Just everyone pushing in the same direction to get things done.

i do like this idea, a site-wide participation event. and i'm not using "event" in the way the cruise or blake steele's plot was an event. i'm talking a regular, weekly or monthly feature that continues for the forseeable future, changing its goals as necessary.

at the risk of saying "another site i play does this, subeta should do it too," another site i play does this, and subeta should do it too. they basically put forth little week-long challenges for the users to accomplish (win a certain game 200 times, delete 400 items, etc) and each challenge corresponds to a certain site-wide boon, like shop discounts or battle experience bonuses. if a challenge is completed, the entire site is rewarded for the effort.

subeta could likewise adopt a similar system that could be geared toward whatever needs to be worked on that particular week or month (however big you want to gear these challenges). work on sp inflation? get users to collectively spend 1 billion sp in the MC. too many free beers on the site? delete 1 million free beers that week. want more user participation? complete X quests. there's a lot of opportunity for group-effort events to be a regular feature of the site working toward the benefit of the site's economy and activity levels.

unfortunately i'm kind of drawing a blank as to what the appropriate rewards would be. if anyone else wants to put in what they'd like to see, i'd be glad to hear it.

I have absolutely no use for this, and I typically dislike doing quests, but damn I love the idea of the site working together on a goal like this. Ugh just nothing like the SUPER USER fiasco; so stressful

Let us never hear the phrase free beer.

I am all for this - It brings back memories of the 2k users achievement and how we all worked together to auto-refresh get users on at the same time and alert people when the numbers got large enough to warrant excitement.

We were tossing around the idea of giving users individual challenges each week for achievement/prize (like do x quests, play x games, etc) but I really like the idea of making you guys all work together in a way to do it!

It reminds me of when we did the Centropolis Cleanup, where everyone had to chip in to clean trash, plant things, etc etc.

I also like the idea of giving everyone the same reward (everyone gets a title or a wearable or something) instead of tiering it out like top 10 get x etc.

yeah tiering prizes is better suited for competition, and i feel like this would work a lot better if it was less competition and more cooperative. especially if it's established from the start that everyone participating gets the same reward (preferrably also clearly presented from the start), then we dont run the risk of people pouring their heart into the event only to feel like the effort wasn't worth the reward.

anyone who thinks it's a worthwhile effort can participate. those who don't can refrain. in the end, no hurt feelings.

As long as it doesn't break the site I'm all for it. :D You know how crazy we can get when we're given something to do.... Ha-ha. But I love the idea, would give me more reason to keep questing every day. So it would be fantastic to see what can be done with this.

I just did some basic math. For a situation like this, there would technically be 8 quest givers available every day that give quest points, if you exclude Carl (b/c Omen Islands), since you can only do either all Mori, all Nori, or a combo of both to the max of 10 for non-GA, and 15 for GA members, within a day. And you could either do Saggi or Sarah, but not easily both :P

So. For argument's sake, let's say everyone participating is a non-GA member and does all 10 of their 8 possible quest giver's quests a day. That gives us 80 quests per day, per user. That times a month is 2.4k quests per user, for a 30 day month. That times, say, 500 users, gives us 1,200,000 quests in a 30 day month. That is assuming that every user is a non-GA with ten quests, but that they complete each. So we could take into account that many users have GAs and thus have 15 quests per day, and would of course have to quit some. Even with those variations thrown into play, I think it's very reasonable to say we could do it! Probably more likely, given the participation of GA users and non-GA users.

Yay boring parts /hi5

Also I really, REALLY like the idea of more sitewide cooperation things vs. teams and stuff. As long as there are no hidden prizes. Gdi I am still feeling rage at how badly I need the Seed Planting Journal for a TC and that I was literally like 8 seeds away from it, and just didn't do it because I was bored with it.

It's a great idea as long as it's not:

  1. deleting items
  2. auto-refresh (snowball war)
  3. top 10

It must be something that we need to do with features of Subeta like getting a certain score in a game, popping X number of minions bubbles.. well, there are many option :)

I love this idea. Something that everyone can realistically participate in (since there aren't personal tiers).

Yes, please this x100. I really don't like events where we have to choose sides and I think it would be great for site morale if everyone could work together. Every once in a while it's a nice twist to have opposing sides, but so many events in the last few years have had teams/sides that it's just overdone at this point. And (as I said on the other board where this came up), I love the idea of giving out prizes for big site-wide participation events.

I don't think the minimum should be super high (it should definitely exist though). More importantly: I think staff should make it clear that there won't be special prizes for the biggest contributors (assuming that is the case). Users should participate for the benefit of everyone without the idea that there are special top tier prizes. Making the event into that kind of competition would go against the idea/feeling of a cooperative effort.

But yeah, total support for this!

This sounds cool. Community building is awesome. However I have to disagree with the general sentiment and say that people should be encouraged to go above and beyond in things like these. Though for a quest thing you can't exactly do more than all of them every day.

One bad day where you have to decline more quests than you accept because paying 700K for Saggi quest or 70K for Quentin is absurd could ruin your chances at a top price.

It's literal RNG and I'm not at ease with top prizes awarded for going above and beyond to something that's widely RNG based.

it comes that way, at least that's what they say, when you play the game!

But in any case, it wouldn't exactly make sense like that for a quest goal anyways i think, since it's already got a hard cap and there's really no way TOO go above and beyond, I just meant more in general which I meant to convey with my last sentence. I'd hope and wish and think that if something like this happened, it'd be such a wonderful success that it'd be applied to other things in neat ways as well :D.

Sidenote: 70k quentin? totes worth it!

Yeah, I get what you mean, but prizes to go above and beyond would just cause people more harm and grief because of the random number god, and I can see people complaining a lot about things.

I could see people giving up as soon as they get a less favorable day. People are quick to give up if things do not go their way

I'd just love to have a little more cooperation and a little less competition, for one. Hell, I like things like restock wars and stuff, but yeah.

Love this idea. I don't really like competing against other users and I hate the Top 10 thing that happens in those kinds of events, but I like when there's an event to participate in. Cooperation is the best!
