Whoo, finally got my pumpkin carved and entered for the contest, I'm pretty pleased with how it came out. Not sure if we're allowed to show them here before the contest is over, so I'm gonna hold off posting any pics for now.
Anybody else entered? Did you add a lot of decorative elements to your punkin or just went straight to the carving? I just carved mine, and submitted it with a lit and an unlit picture in the same submission.
I really, REALLY need to get going on that !!

I'm going to enter :D I was gonna get mine down during the weekend, but I haven't been feeling well over the past few days so that didn't happen. I'll work on it tonight or tomorrow. Probably just gonna do some good ol fashioned carving, no decorations.
I need to go get a pumpkin. I kinda wish the deadline was closer to Halloween night, so I could display it that night. Hopefully it won't rot before then.

Yeah I had intended to get mine done over the weekend, but it wasn't until monday that I had the time to get anywhere with it. Boy was I kicking myself for getting the ginormous punkin! I swear, it was at least 35 pounds. Eshh, it about took me longer to clean out the inside than it did to carve it!
I've picked up my pumpkin and finished my sketch, but I probably won't get to the actual carving until Thursday. Most likely no extra decorations for me either.
I hope they release a gallery afterwards like they did with the cake, I can't wait to see what everyone came up with.
So are we allowed to carve characters from subeta and then spice them up or would that not count?n
It should be fine. It's a subeta-related pumpkin carving competition afterall.
I got mine finished awhile ago and submitted it. I just carved mine. I took an unlit and lit pic only because what I did worked better as a lit pumpkin. I really don't have hopes that mine would win, I just wanted to try out something and the contest gave me a good excuse to try it out.
Hopefully I won't need any other pics because two days later I carved the other side of the pumpkin as the Welcome to Nightvale eye. Since then as we've had very warm temps the pumpkin has shriveled and rotted. lol Usually it's been cold enough that they last a lot longer then under a week.

I finished and submitted mine last night. It's just a straight carving, and I didn't light it because it's a Funkin, not a real pumpkin, and I didn't want to risk lighting it on fire :)
I'm very grateful that the contest allows fake pumpkins, because I don't have the workspace to clean out a real one at the moment.
I did one too. :) Just carving, no extras! Mine is simple yet cool, so I am really hoping I can chosen as one of the winners! Good luck to you, too!
I've never tried working with a funkin, was it pretty easy to carve? Are they already hollow inside? I bet a small LED or battery type pumpkin light might have worked for a lit effect.
Good luck to ALL of us! I can't wait to see what makes the top 3 and yeah, I'm really hoping for a gallery so we can see them all.
I'm not sure if the fake pumpkins I carved before were Funkins, but mine at least were a bit hard. I had to use a exacto knife with a sharp blade. I don't know if it was just me but, they are dangerous to carve. lol I cut my finger pretty deep because I was having a hard time trying to cut a curved area out.
Another thing is they're not forgiving of mistakes like a real pumpkin. When you lop off a wrong piece on a real pumpkin you can always use a toothpick to put it back.
One other thing I don't like about them is when you look closer at them you can tell they're fake. The insides give it away.

I've never actually carved a REAL pumpkin (when I was a kid we painted ours), but the Funkin was surprisingly easy! The shell is about an inch thick, and it is indeed hollow. I bought the specialized tools to go with it, and had no problems. They're more expensive than I expected - it was $29, but I got it on clearance. But it looks very realistic and will probably last multiple years.
I think the info that came with it said no light stronger than 5 watts.
My wife and I finished ours last minute tonight. (procrastination FTW) I am pleased with how mine came out as I don't really consider myself artsy but I do enjoy pumpkin carving. Her's came out very well, she always has such nice creative ideas. And because we're just a tid bit redneck, next sunday we'll be using them for target practice, and maybe mine will see how many firecrackers can fit in it :D. Can't wait to see how everyone's came out and to see the winners. All the contests so far have showcased some real creativity, I have big hopes for some neat subetan pumpkins.
I REALLY wanted to enter this contest, but I haven't carved a pumpkin in yrs and I live in a tiny apartment--which wouldn't have stopped me when I was young. Were you happy with your finished product? What did you think of the winners? Would that be off topic here?
I wanted to enter just to see what items all the entrants rec'd. I noticed has that very cool title that she said was from entering the contest. I had to ask her cause I never think of the obvious, lol!!
I really loved the one of the reborn Tigrean. I also thought the one with the 4 tiny pumpkins with Jaxon's minions was really great, a very creative idea. That Tigrean was especially cool with the tip of the tail flaming, just like the actual pet.
I've actually never heard of a funkin-- I'm very out of the loop. What are they made of? So IS there a gallery of all the entrants? I only saw the 4 that were chosen. Does anyone know?
I was pretty happy with it, here is the pic. As for the album, it's posted on Subeta's facebook account.
Can't complain (much) that I didn't win, the ones that did were pretty awesome and yeah..that Tigrean was amazing.
According to their website, Funkins are made out of low-density foam designed to mimic the consistency of a real pumpkin. The walls are about half an inch thick, and they don't go bad, of course.
Now what am I going to do with my Terracoon Smashing Pumpkin for the next several years? :P
Oh wow that red one is amazing!! How did you accomplish that?
OK, thanks! :) I'd like to see a photo of the terracoon smashing pumpkin, I LOVE that mental image! :) I think I'd keep it nearby as a shrine to subeta crashes, lol!!
Thanks! The red effect is just from having used a light inside the pumpkin. I cut it open from the bottom rather than the top, hollowed it out fairly thin, scraped the surface rather than cutting all the way through using wood carving tools. Once I had that done I nestled it into a black towel and hung a black cloth behind it to take the first picture, then we put a small electric light inside it, shut all the lights off and took the one that shows the light glowing through. Lastly I popped it outside with some other pumpkins to be carved later.
Heh, I finally got rid of it after it started getting all moldy (eww) rolled it down the hill into the woodline for the critters to nibble on it.
