Hey everyone! We're trying something new with the Pet Spotlight, and we need your help to test it.

The Problem

The spotlight queue has gotten really long, with some of you have been waiting years for your pet to be reviewed. That's not fair to anyone, and it's not sustainable. I want to fix that!

The Idea

Instead of staff being the only ones who review pets, we're opening it up to the community. You can sign up as a Spotlight Judge and help review nominated pets. Esmerelda — yes, that Esmerelda — is running the show.

How It Works

For Judges

  • Visit the Pet Spotlight and click "Review Pets"
  • Click "Become a Spotlight Judge" to opt in
  • You'll be shown pets to review — up to 5 per day
  • For each pet, you check off criteria:
    • Visual Design
    • Story / Character
    • Treasure Chest (does it fit the vibe?)
    • Minion (does it fit the theme?)
    • Name
    • Completeness
  • Give an overall star rating (1-5)
  • Leave optional written feedback for the owner
  • Earn 50,000 sP per review
  • Work toward four new Spotlight Judge achievements

For Pet Owners

  • Your pet gets reviewed by multiple community members
  • You'll receive detailed feedback on what's working and what could be improved — delivered personally by Esmerelda (she has opinions)
  • Pets that pass community review go straight into the winner queue

The Rules

  • You can't review your own pets
  • You can't review your friends' pets
  • Your reviews build a reputation score over time — reviewers whose scores align with the consensus gain more influence
  • Pets need agreement from multiple reviewers to pass or fail (no one person decides)

This Is a Pilot

I'm starting with just 5 pets from the existing queue. This is a test run to make sure the system works and feels fair before we open it up to everyone.

We will honor the results. Whatever the community decides for these 5 pets, that's what happens.

We Want Your Feedback

After you've tried it — whether as a judge or a pet owner — please reply to this thread and tell me:

  • Was the review process clear and easy to follow?
  • Did the criteria make sense?
  • Did the feedback feel useful (for owners)?
  • Was the sP reward fair?
  • What would you change?

Your feedback will directly shape the final version of this feature.

What's Next

If the pilot goes well, I'm planning some improvements and changes to the system:

  • Seasonal themed spotlight competitions tied to holidays (Morostide, Luminaire, etc.)
  • Top 3 seasonal winners with special trophies
  • More rewards for active judges (reactions, avatar borders)
  • Opening the full queue to community review
  • Potentially moving back to more winners being drawn more frequently (we've got over 300 pets waiting to be judged!)

Head over to the Pet Spotlight to check it out!

I think everything makes sense, but how can clearly incomplete profiles be handled? I got one pet that had everything but a layout. i don't want to give a 1 star, I feel like that is insulting. I would remove the rating system maybe? Maybe have a question checkbox that asks: "Is this page completed?" Yes or no. If no, then you can write to the owner what is missing. If yes, then everything else can stay the same as it currently is.

Also i don't have an opinion really on the given sPs reward, I feel that's not necessary, but then again maybe it is an incentive for people! Also how is it handled that I don't review my own pets or a friend's pets? Is it going off my friend list?

I love this idea. I tried to review a pet and it says in red: "This pet is not currently in community review." So I do not know how to participate if it's got this glitch? :-D

I do love this idea though - it's a great way to improve this system and streamline it, while giving users a way to have a better stronger community feel!

I will say I think a rating system is good, as it gives honest feedback about completeness. Or perhaps a rating should be applied to each area of judgement so the rating (if low) can be applied to the one area in which it needs help. That would actually be more helpful from a user getting feedback standpoint.

THIS. Cause everything might be ready EXCEPT one thing, like a minion or a TC.

I'm also getting "This pet is not currently in community review."

I think it would be nice to also have a tiny bit of guidance on what is or is not necessary. We have a checklist for things like story, treasure chest, and minion, but does that meant that all those aspects are necessary or just that we need to remember to have a look at them? Could a pet still pass if it say is much more focused on art but doesn't really have a full-on story, just a little description? These rules might be somewhere, but it'd be a good idea to include them on the review page for clarity.

this is why i'm not asking everyone to do this — if giving rating feedback isn't your thing, that's completely okay! pet rating isn't for everybody and there's zero pressure here.

the star ratings matter though, because they're the backbone of the reputation system i'm building behind the scenes. if you're rating every pet a 1 when other users are giving them 4s and 5s, the system starts trusting your ratings less and less — and eventually it'll pull your rating ability altogether.

that kind of automated moderation is what's going to make this sustainable long-term without me having to manually babysit everything.

also! pushing a fix right now for the pets-not-in-review issue. so many of you absolutely flooded the system that a few pets got promoted straight to the main queue ahead of schedule — and i said i'd respect the outcomes, so those are staying. but i'm going to move a few more pets in and bump that threshold up by... a lot... while we're still testing.

seriously though, thank you all for jumping in so fast to help test this. 🙏

I replied to this on Kumos under the announcement, but my posts aren't showing up here. However, I also encountered the "pet isn't available to review" error.

Otherwise, as one of those who has been waiting for several years in the spotlight queue, I think this is a fantastic idea! I'm glad to see pets getting attention.

However, I do want to mention that with the Legacy layout changes, pet profiles are very messed up when viewed on Legacy. They seem to display properly on Kumos, though. I think before this new system goes into effect, either the Legacy profile issues need to be fixed, or else the system should show reviewers the Kumos version of profile and not the Legacy one. All my profiles in the spotlight queue look terrible on Legacy, whereas they were fine before the layout change, so if someone reviewed them right now on Legacy, they'd probably be rejected due to issues beyond my control.

For me, the most important aspects are a coded layout (I forgive layout errors as some of my stuff still isn't displayed correctly on legacy but is fine on Kumos); a minion; some items in a TC (doesn't have to be large, just fitting!); some kind of blurb of a story or something that makes the pet a character.

Art is totally all optional imo. But obviously the more one adds to their pet's profile, the more interested I am in them!

Okay for example: Ordinemon's profile on Legacy vs. her profile on Kumos

Issues on the Legacy version, which were not issues before the layout change, and which display correctly on Kumos:

  • Her pet image isn't centered, and it's cropped too much.
  • Column2 is too narrow.
  • Her minion's image isn't centered, and the box no longer fits the text.
  • The padding or spacing is changed on all the boxes so that the boxes are smaller. (They also look farther apart, but maybe that's just because they're smaller; I can't tell.)
  • Her TC images are smaller and therefore no longer fit in the box correctly.
  • In the text of her story (example) the paragraph tags no longer provide space between them; therefore, separate paragraphs are all smashed together with no spaces between them.

These issues are affecting all of my pet profiles, so I'm assuming they're global for the pet pages in general. I wouldn't mind correcting them, except I'm afraid that if I change them to be right on Legacy, then the Kumos version would be broken; plus, I don't want to put a lot of work into making them work on Legacy if we'll be moving pet profiles completely to Kumos soon anyway.

Basically... I don't mind the Legacy profiles being borked if I know that reviewers will be looking only at the Kumos profiles. That way, I could make the tweaks needed to make everything look perfect on Kumos, and change my pets' links to the Kumos versions on my user profile. But right now, I don't know which site to make the profiles work with, and I hadn't wanted to make any changes because of getting kicked back into the spotlight queue if any of my profiles had been approved.

That's not a problem now with the new review system going to speed things along! So tbh I'm happy to start fixing the profiles to work on Kumos, if I knew that the Kumos profiles are what will be reviewed.

eta: on Kumos, the pet profile links on the Pets page don't work. The format it's using is https://kumos.subeta.net/petinfo.php?petid=964164 which gives me a 404 for all pets.

Secondling a request for a “not currently finished” checkbox option please (maybe one was lacking a treasure chest, or something), as a 1 star would feel unfair….

I do get the point of one star being ‘not ready yet’ though, so maybe once we get used to the whole concept then one stars won’t feel unkind in the same way!

Does the system recognise what device / browser we’re using when we rate the profiles? Because if for instance using an iPad messes up the layout, and I rated it a 2 (as the layout was screwy for me) but someone else used a computer and rated it as a 5 (as they didn’t experience the layout screwiness), that would look like I’m rating things low on purpose. high brain fog today, so I hope that makes sense

I’ve been shown 4 pets to review and it now tells me “there are no pets waiting for review right now”

I felt a little bad seeing that some profiles were complete but had some misalignments due to the recent changes in the legacy code, but this needs to be fixed anyway and I added the comment. I didn't review the profiles on Kumos as I'm discovering right now that pet profiles work on Kumos, sorry. Overall feedback, everything went okay and solid. I also wasn't able to review the last pet but it could be because the owner is my friend. Not that I was able to see who.

Third to say that a confirmation checkbox would be great.

First, I'd like to say YES THANK YOU for all of this! I love this system and the idea that many people get to review a pet, give feedback, and select the winners.

I wasn't able to test the system, as it shows ''No Pets Available There are no pets waiting for review right now. Check back later!'' when I go to review pets.

I will echo what said re:profiles. All of my pets profiles are messed up on Legacy, similar issues to Balloon: overlays are cropped, text isn't being displayed properly, padding/spacing seems wrong in a lot of place, some columns have changed width for no reasons etc.

Here's an exemple of Andromeda on Legacy and Kumos:

Legacy (profile) vs Kumos (profile) (the spoiler tags I use to make open tabs don't seem to work on Kumos, so her profile is also partially broken there)

I'm glad that at least the profiles are working on Kumos, it means they can most likely be fixed on Legacy!

Really looking forward to testing this new Spotlight review, and it's certainly going to really motivate me into adding the finishing touches on a lot of profiles to get those pets into the queue once again!

Btw does the optional feedback textbox count towards our reputation score? Most of the time i have nothing to say, I'm just a quiet person.

This! I redid all my eligible profiles about 2 years ago during a summer. Spend many hours on it, and now they're all messed up again. All of my eligible pets had fully ready profiles, now none of them. Are we sure that no more changes will be made to them before I start redoing them all ... again? I'm not even sure how to fix them again. For example, all images appear under each other, instead of next to each other, without any breaks or anything between them.

Don't start redoing them! I'm hoping to get them closer in alignment today, and I'm going to link to the Kumos profiles as well (so that you can see them there - I think they're basically right) and then get back to making the legacy ones match how they're supposed to.

I removed over 10,000 lines of CSS from Legacy that weren't needed on most pages, but created cascading issues for the pet profiles, that you've all been dealing with for 10+ years. Things you just shouldn't have needed to do, and I think I can nudge things back to how they're supposed to work.

My real hope is that you shouldn't need to modify anything, and I should know for sure in the next day or two 🤞

Thanks for the heads up! I really wouldn't be happy spending more hours on them (while half of the time not knowing what I'm doing) and seeing it reversed again. I'll definitely wait to be sure that everything is stable around them before adjusting anything again.

I was going to try it, but the pet profile I got looked wonky, like it was probably suffering from the same issues pointed out above. It didn't feel fair to judge the profile for issues out of the pet owner's control.

I would really like that too! This is very in the weeds:

It's been a couple of weird things, so we're importing a new library (Tailwind 6) which sets some defaults that we wouldn't have, like making all of the images block instead of inline - which is why there are weird image issues around the site. In most cases this is a really sensible default, but adding it to a site that was doing it the old way for 20 years obviously... broke a bunch of things.

So my choice is: A: Override that, make images inline again (which is not the default in most browsers in 2026) B: Run around our 400+ pages and fix images to look better set to block

I will probably do A in most cases 😅 which will also mean fixes to pages like the pet proflies.
