Help! I need somebody (Help!) not just anybody (Help!) you know I need someone Help!

I have been playing Subeta for 14+ years now, with varying levels of activeness. And throughout that time I've been been training my main pet fairly regularly. So much so, that this is where he's at:

However, I've never really gotten into battling before. So I have a tier 12 pet for no particular reason. Recently I have decided that I would like to be able to battle which (beyond the easiest opponents) requires that I know what I'm doing.
Up until now, whenever there's an event or something I'll battle the easier and maybe medium opponents by just throwing some of my weapons at them. So I decided to read both Subeta and user-made guides to start to figure things out. But I have some questions including set advice.

Weapons

I don't really have the sP to buy a bunch of weapons right now, or really any that cost more than 500k - 1m sP. I do, however, already own many weapons, several of which are pretty decent. So I tried looking at some of the set advice, but in most cases I don't know what makes one thing better than another or which things can easily trade places with another, etc.

So I'm hoping someone can look at what I do have and try to help me make a set(s) out of it.
my weapons
Here are the weapons that I have already in my armory.

And I dug through my wardrobe and pulled out these items. It's possible that I missed some, I mostly only looked through the held category.

Scrolls

I have to admit, I'm a little confused about scrolls. First of all, I'm not sure how they work with the AP and all anyway. But also, I made several at the Secluded Shrine, but I only seem to be able to make up to level 3. I'm assuming/hoping that in order to be able to make higher level ones I just have to keep making lower level ones for a while? At first I assumed it only went to level 3, but then looking through some of the set advice it looks like it can go up to level 5 at least??

my scrolls
Again, I don't have the sP currently to buy $$ ones.

Potions

I don't understand how this works??!!?? The things that I assume are potions take a regular weapon slot? I know the guide is undergoing a revamp right now, so maybe all of it will be explained when it's done.

Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to battling! Denizci is certainly very strong, great job there; the most time-consuming job is done :D [sup]Well nearly; there's still T13 xD[/sup]

Weapons Building a set is a little more complicated at the higher tiers because of the variety of opponents. Generally speaking you want: a 100% freezer and a shield/bomb for turn 1 2 set-up weapons/bombs for turn 2 (since the opponent is frozen we get a free turn), anything that buffs you, or messes with your opponent is good 2 infinite use weapons (or 3 if the opponent can steal), preferably ones that defend the icons your opponent uses most. Bonus points if they have a % heal and high icon damage (around 30-40 for the higher tiers) 1 really big heal, and another situational item (or a 2nd big heal)

weapons you have Obviously there are a lot of upgrades you can buy, but these 8 actually make a pretty decent set

Great bomb, especially for longer battles because of it's 100 turn curse (curse damage cannot be blocked)

a 100% freezer
a bit of a low tier, but it's a decent weapon, and the 7% heal is nice
will turn 1 weapon of the opponent into junk, fantastic set-up item (they try to use the junk item still, so it reduces a lot of damage)
negates all damage you take for 1 turn, decent if you need to heal and not die, or if you need just 1 more turn to win
these are both really expensive (consider me jealous xD) the Chancellors blocks all Dark(:dmg:dark: and Physical(:dmg:physical:) damage, and the Mirroring all Light(:dmg:light: and Physical:, great for opponents that deal those icons
a great weapon! will probably be your main attacker for now, I copied the stats from SubetaLodge: Attack: 7-8 Magma, 10 Wind, 16 Dark, 7-8 Water (40-42 icons) Defense: 7-10 Magma, 7-10 Dark (14-20 icons) Curse: Riftborn: 2 Magma, 2 Dark, 5 turns Blessing: Lucky Strike: Defends 5 light, heals 140hp, 4 turns Other: Heals 9%
You are missing a big heal, which should be your absolute first priority, unfortunately because you have so much HP any cheap heal isn't going to be worth using - I would save up for the Phoenix Quill, which is a 100% Once per Battle heal that you can find in the Millionaire Center

Your 2nd priority would be to upgrade the Gutting Knife, unfortunately Infinite Use weapons that are better than it are quite expensive to buy. Being at T12 stats should let you just muscle past most things under Impossible difficulty though, even without defending properly ;)

[/spoiler]

Scrolls Each scroll takes up some AP to equip, and you should have 1 AP for every 16 points of intelligence (so 167 for Den - you can find AP on the Pets page under his stats), if you don't have that you'll need to read him a book to make it update his total. From what you said about the Shrine either his AP isn't updated, or you don't have him set as the Active pet (the shrine looks at the AP of your active pet only - 20AP should let you craft everything), for now though I'd leave the shrine alone.

Sadly a good scroll set can be very expensive ('cos you eventually want a lot of OPB freezing scrolls), but all you really need is 1 Infinite use scroll (with a % heal at your Tier). If you can muscle Saggitarius and the Gate Keeper to 35 wins each they drop that you can make into at the genetech lab, which is decent enough (Your Mirror Shield should help you a lot with Saggitarius :))

One Use Things I guess by 'Potions' you mean the empty box under your weapons in the UI? Any one use (not the same as OPB. You use these items in battle and they're gone forever) items go here and you can use them with your 2 weapons and scroll on your turn. Your Glaciating and Negating Pylonic are one use things but there are a lot more. The only guide I can find specifically for them is a bit old - [topic not found], or I filtered the Subetalodge weapon list down to single use things https://www.subetalodge.us/weap_list/use/sing/icon_type/dark.attack

I could go on with advice on more progression, but I don't want to overload you with information, so feel free to ask more <3

OMG, thank you so much. This is incredibly helpful.

I have several follow up questions/comments. Feel free to answer as many or as few as you want.

I did consider buying the phoenix quill, but it's summer stock and I don't have it in me to pay the extra 2mil right now. I've gone through I think over a billion sP reading books to Denizci and am currently very low for me. I still have 100 mil, but I will need to spend around half of it on the fall books in the MC. Normally I'd sell csc for sP but the price for csc is unusually low right now. I may end up selling some anyway. Maybe I can suck it up and buy it anyway.

When I am able to upgrade Large Gutting Knife, what do you recommend I go for?

So for the shields, I should alternate which one I use based upon what type of damage my opponent uses? Also, I've had them for ages. They were waaaaaay back in my wardrobe. I assume I bought them when they were released in the cash shop because they look cool. I am confident I didn't pay 3000 csc each for them so they must have been cheaper. As I'm sure you noticed, I had quite a lot of weapons in my wardrobe! Also, when would I use them?

Speaking of weapons being in my wardrobe, do you mind telling me which weapons should live in my armory just in case and which are fine going back into my wardrobe because I won't ever use them? If that's too complicated, no worries.

Could you elaborate more on "set-up weapons/bombs"?

I'm assuming the 2 infinite use weapons are the knife and rift staff? What would be the third choice for when I need 3? And what would I pull to equip 3?

Denizci is not my active pet, so that explains why it didn't show more options for the scrolls! Duh! Are there any scrolls I should have (that I can make) until I'm able to make myself the protector one? And are there any others in particular you recommend that I get when I have more sP or am able to earn them myself?

So for potions, I have to equip them directly to Denizci through my inventory?

Quote
a 100% freezer and a shield/bomb for turn 1
2 set-up weapons/bombs for turn 2 (since the opponent is frozen we get a free turn), anything that buffs you, or messes with your opponent is good

So are these generally the first two steps to any battle?

Again, thank you very much.

Liquid Fire Torch would be a very cheap upgrade for the gutting knife.

I think I saw a Champion scroll that you already have. Champion isn't great but if memory serves it has a percent heal. That would be better than nothing for now.

@ ColdDragon I think they must have changed the Champion Scroll - Subetalodge has the wrong info on it It's a 12HP heal

@ Zabrie No worries <3 Doing these in an oddly random order as the answers come to me xD

Yup

Quote

Correct. The Twisted Rift Blade isn't that much different from the Gutted Knife, so that would be a nice backup, I'd pull either the Temple Shard, a Shield that isn't going to defend anything, or the Deluxe Death Shard if the opponent has freezing disabled.

Quote

Also correct, though you wouldn't ever use both on the same turn, because they deal no damage. I would use them A) If you're taking a decent amount of the damage they block, and B) You are steadily losing health through your weapon heals. If so, you'd use one in place of the Gutting Knife, since it's the weaker weapon.

Quote
So are these generally the first two steps to any battle?
Any battle that you don't just crush, yes (the little guys aren't worth the extra clicks)

Quote
Speaking of weapons being in my wardrobe, do you mind telling me which weapons should live in my armory just in case
Both Shields, the Rift Staff, and the Rift Blade for sure, until you get a bigger armoury collection. If you wanted to battle with some smaller pets then the Balrog, Eternal, Hydra, and Icekiss are ok things, but not for Den. The Forj Tempered Kusarigama is decent for a budget T4 also.

Quote
Could you elaborate more on "set-up weapons/bombs"?
elaboration got long xD So a 'bomb' is any OPB weapon that deals a lot of damage for it's Tier (hence why they're made OPB) - 63 total icons + 100 turns of a 3 icon curse - 30 to 140 total icons + increases strength by 250 for the battle - 30-45 total icons (massive for T4) Because we only get 1 use per battle it's nice to use them when we've frozen the opponent, so they can't defend any damage from them.

A set-up item is anything that is going to make the battle easier for several turns. - both turn 1 of the opponent's weapons into junk - boosts strength, defense, and speed by 250 for the battle, and has a blessing and curse - defends 6 Dark, Earth, and Wind, and heals a bit for 10 turns (really nice for the early tiers)

Because opponents get really big in the endgame, bombs that don't also have lasting effects lose some usefulness (even a 120 icon bomb doesn't do much to 25k HP monsters). My serious battles start like this: Turn 1 - + Opponent is frozen (and I can't be for 2 turns), and I get a huge stat boost and a blessing, the opponent gets a curse too Turn 2 - + 2 weapons are now junk, and I get another blessing from the tablets, and the opponent gets another curse With that ^, I have a decent chance of the opponent using a junk weapon on a turn, and I have more stats than normal, and the curses are dealing extra chip damage each turn, which makes the whole battle easier to win.

However, I also have rather expensive scrolls to defend myself on turn 1, and to heal myself on turn 2. Without scrolls you would use the Freezer with something that reduces damage.

Quote
When I am able to upgrade Large Gutting Knife, what do you recommend I go for?
has a nice one there :) and it's actually getting cheaper as more people get it from the event Daemon; defends 40 fire icons too The cheapest kind-of endgame things are the , followed by the There's a lot of weapons that drop from challengers unlocked from past CSC items, which get re-released on Black Friday (I think they still do anyway), including the Paintbrushes From a pure end-game perspective my next stop would be the which is usually the cheapest of the big weapons

While saving though you can also work towards some free upgrades from the Battle Shop: You'll want to beat up Aboxcalypse (the punching bag) with 2 pets to get 2 of these:

then upgrade like so at the genetech lab All the components are in the Battle Shop, so you just battle stuff for the tokens (Easy opponents give Easy tokens, etc)

50 Easy tokens Combine with to make

50 Medium tokens Combine with to make
50 Hard tokens Combine with to make
75 Very Hard tokens Combine with to make
75 Extremely Hard tokens Combine with to make

Keep 1 Helmet 'cos it's a sweet freezer (it's blessing prevents you from getting frozen for 2 turns), then slowly earn impossible tokens

100 Impossible tokens Combine with to make

The Robot potion in there is a pretty nice bomb too, if you find yourself with spare tokens for it

Quote
And are there any [scrolls] in particular you recommend that I get when I have more sP or am able to earn them myself?
Annoyingly most are very expensive :( The big Infinite Use scroll that most aim for at the end is which drops from Crithbolcon (a CSC challenger)
For cheaper Infinites and can be made at the shrine cheaper than the user price (I think, might wanna price check that) They aren't terrible, but you only need 1 infinite scroll; Terra heals for 10%, Divine for 5% but also defends 3 of every icon
If you can get 10 wins on General Error you get a a OPB freezer, which is a nice start to the freezing scroll hoard
The is also at the shrine OPB, defends 75 Fire, Earth, Light, Physical, and Water icons

Sending you to replace gutting knife. If you beat Sophie 5x you’ll get the paintbrush blades for free and in my opinion they’re an endgame weapon.

Also sending you This will be your main scroll for healing/damage until you can upgrade to aftershocks.

Good luck!

Need these, please hit me up!

No problem at all; always nice to have a new battler :) We tend to hang around on the Battle Chat 2021 Part 4 too. (We exploded the last 3 xD) There's a bunch of nice links in the 1st post and you're always welcome to come chat with us. [sup]I promise we don't bite... only at the opponents anyway <3[/sup]

(I knew there was a cheap scroll I was forgetting! XD)

Yeah, what others were saying, you can&;t really go wrong with Critical and Blessing crystals you can get in the battle shop. I typically put one of each of those, and then 1-2 of if the weapon has the slots for it. Perilous Whirlpool is a decent scroll that can be made relatively cheaply at the shrine, it has a low freeze chance and blocks fire. Gale Force scroll in the battle shop heals and has a low freeze chance. Shriek of Despair is the highest rate of freezing scroll, it&;s pricey, but worth it (and also, hopefully you&;ll be able to earn a couple during morostide from battling night lady). You can earn a Psycho Smasher scroll (also high freeze rate) by beating General Error 10 times (and again at 50 iirc)

Hi hi! Hope you&;re both having fun!
The season of freezing scrolls is nearly upon us - both Den and Gremlin should be able to beat the spider lady (unless I&;m remembering her power wrong haha), yay for free Shriek of Despair Scrolls 🎉
