I've no idea if this is against the rules or not to discuss or give feedback on site rules, so I apologize in advance if this isn't allowed. If not, please feel free to close the thread, mods!

"No Discussing Frozen Users Do not discuss or mention frozen users."

I've always been curious about this rule and why it is in place? Some players self-freeze for various reasons and that may cause confusion for their friends who suddenly notice a strikethrough in their username, if the self-freeze is randomly done. But because of this rule, friends can't ask other friends what had happened on-site; they have to ask off-site to get an answer.

Afaik this rule has been in place since forever, at least as long as I've been a player here. It's never made much sense to me, but maybe that's only me? Perhaps I'm missing the obvious reason? xD What does everyone else think?

Personally I suspect the reason for the rule is so that people (friends of the frozen in particular) won't get all bent out of shape and create threads and/or tickets complaining that their friend was frozen unfairly. Or spark discussion on if a specific rule is really fair. Or that they didn't really break the rule, etc.

I wish there was a way that distinguished between self-freezing and "official" freezing. I don't disagree with the main rule, but I think it should not apply to self-frozen people and only to officially frozen ones.

We already have a problem with people making false claims and speculations on why people were frozen offsite. I was not around when the rule was instated nor do I know why it was instated but honestly I can understand not wanting that conversation on here. No one needs to know why people were frozen for rule breaking.

I wouldn't mind if there was a distinction between self-freeze and rule breaking freeze on their freeze notice but there may be some users that don't want everyone knowing they self-froze, I don't know.

I've always thought that the rule was in place to prevent drama from flying around about possible rule breaking.

If users feel like they want to self freeze and want people to know that they have done so, they could always leave a message in their status saying good bye or something to that effect.

This rule comes from me, and it originates from a few places. Wow, it feels really weird to be talking like a historian now but HERE WE GO 🎉

Before Subeta, there were two major online communities that were similar, both of which I'm sure a lot of people here came from! They were Gaia Online and Neopets, and to me (at ... 14) they represented the two polar opposites of how to build a community (things I had to think hard about... at 14!!!).

On Neopets, you couldn't say that you were gay. You couldn't talk about anything, and couldn't swear. That made the forums ONLY about Neopets, because any real life discussion almost always made it to the realm of being against the rules.

On Gaia, it was the wild west, or felt like it. Some of the early Subeta users remember the drama squads on Gaia (and.. we replicated some of them here 💀), where someone being banned became THE TOPIC of discussion of the entire buying and selling forum for days. It could literally take the wind out of the sails of the in game economy for someone "famous" to be banned or have some kind of dramatic event on the site.

Neither of those were how I wanted Subeta to work. I wanted you to be able to talk about Subeta, your life on Subeta AND I wanted you to be able to make real friendships, right here on the forums. I also wanted you to be able to use the forums without the drama-of-the-day bleeding over and FWIW I think we've done an incredible job at this over the years. Yeah, you can go to an offsite tumblr to ask questions, but at that point 99.5% of the Subeta users aren't going to see it, and it's not disruptive (except to the people who center their lives around drama on a virtual pet site, in which case no amount of moderation is going to help them or the issue).

If someone gets banned, we just don't talk about it, we keep going on in our cool Subeta world. If someone self freezes, hopefully they told their friends. Maybe we can make the option to leave a comment or something when you self freeze, but this rule is unlikely to go away/.

Jovi's understanding of the rule is how I understood the reasoning for it too. It's also private information between users and staff that neither users nor staff may necessarily want out in the open in the first place.

With users that self-freeze, it's up to the user whether they wish to actually post that they are leaving or not since I'm assuming not all users necessarily wish to post that information in the first place. If they do, then they could post a good-bye message stating so though.

And, I posted too late since Keith posted already.

Thanks , I didn't really want to remember the Wild West that was Bragging/Complaining in 2008/2009. Man, that was extremely wild - there was a huge polarization in the userbase, so it was...extremely stressful, to say the least.

But anyway, I'm completely down with the current rule

Keep in mind that some users that self-freeze originally did it to hide the fact that they were breaking the rules. Didn't happen very often, but some people did try to use self-freezing as a shield from investigation.

Can't you even sent an smail to ask other friends why friend X has frozen themselves? In smail we can also talk in different languages. (I think) or just ask why user X is frozen. All in an s-mail. Not in a comment on someones profile.

[edit]

The answer is: even in an smail it is still a violation of the rules.

No, it's a rule that applies to the entire site.

is right, but just for future reference, if there's any confusion about a rule, it's best to file a ticket to ask if something is against the rules or not, so that a UA can clarify for you and no one gets in any trouble :D

Maybe there can be a way to distinguish self-frozen and banned users? That may help with some of the curiosity.

As an aside, I never really got into the Drama side of Subeta but I did find it amusing. The old B&C was truly a sight to behold.. always the juiciest forum to browse, lol. Nowadays I'm cool with less drama.

maybe give people who use the self-freeze page a different colored user icon? like silver or something but then again I guess there will always be -someone- who doesn't want others to know exactly what went on

It's kinda a breach of privacy to disclose someone self-froze as well :(

Oh, i'm glad I came on the forum today. I was also wondering about the "why" regarding this rule. Avoiding unnecessary drama is a good enough reason for this rule. Though, i'm pretty sure some users are curious to know the reason others get frozen, as to avoid making the same mistake. Though, perhaps their number is small.

I must say, for a 14 yo to come up with such a drastic solution, sounds quite like the mature thinking to me. Thank you, for clarifying this one.

Could always make it an optional thing at the time of self-freezing. That way it's on the user to let people know if they want to.

I think an option to note why you self-froze would be a good feature. For one, it'd be useful for people who are just planning on taking an extended hiatus for whatever reason, just to note that you plan on being back eventually. For another, for people who leave the site permanently, it might be useful for them to include other sites they frequent for any friends they've made here.

I admit I'm speaking as someone who made a lot of online friends over the years and who sometimes wonders what ever happened to the ones who I've lost contact with through various site closings and such. :< Closure is important to me lol.

Maybe a bit of a harsh rule so long as users aren't discussing with malicious intent.

I think this rule makes sense to me if it is referring to the forums, but I do feel that when a person's account is frozen, it makes sense that those of us that are friends of that person, are concerned. Of course we want to talk about amongst ourselves - why would that be a bad thing? Speculation is gonna happen anyways, why can't we talk about it on our comments? I have self-froze my account before, and did let friends know, but there were people that I interacted with that weren't on my friend's list who wondered where I had gone. They couldn't even ask anyone about it. Drama happens - it isn't always malicious.

It's been a while since I looked at someone frozen, but whenever you hover over a username and see their HA/pet/trophies/stuff... does the status show up as well?

If so: self-freezing users who wanted to give a heads-up to people could just do it that way?

If not: maybe that's an option to be explored? Where users who self-freeze would still have their status shown, and could therefore say "focusing on school back in june" or whatever? And if they didn't want to say anything, just leave it blank/a space (or idk, toggle... update and show your status y/n)?
