[item=1000% Sugar Sticker] Description: The beetus is imminent.

Being the parent of a young child with type 1 diabetes, I feel this item description was unintentionally ignorant. So many kids and young adults are getting diagnoses of type 1 on a daily basis and it’s actually very different from type 2. It has nothing to do with diet and exercise, it’s an auto immune disease with absolutely no cure. Until myself had my child diagnosed I knew next to nothing about diabetes but it’s very wrong to think that sugar had anything to attribute to it.

Don’t know if at any point the item description could be changed, just thought I’d give my feedback anyways!

This sticker doesn't seem factually wrong or accusatory to me. Part of this may indeed be words, but IMO not like the OP is thinking. Diabetes type 1 and type 2 have nearly the same name, but they're not the same.

Does beetus=type 1 always and forever to most people? Because to me, it's slang and like the slang word itis, it's just a descriptor of feeling bad after eating something and has no legal meaning or medical diagnosis attached. No MD will use 'beetus' or 'itis'. Also there seems to be a confusion between "cause a disease" and "feel bad because you have a disease already and then did something that aggravates it"

Diabetes 1 is not caused by sugar. Diabetes type 2 (a different disease with nearly the same name) may not technically be caused by sugar but the Standard American Diet has a whole fuckton of sugar in it so assserting that sugar doesnt cause it is a disingenuous lie and caters to the assholes in the sugar industry and food manufacturing industry. The assholes who would make a profit from us buying their food add sugar. They add it to recipes that you or I would not add sugar to if we made them ourselves, and most Americans willingly eat these ready-made foods in quantity. So eating-sugar is relevant to the cause of the second mentioned disease..

If anyone with a disease or not eats something with a sticker on it that says it's 1000 percent sugar they will get the beetus. Even folks who don't have type 1 or type 2 will get logy after eating lots of something sugary. And diabetes type 1 is not caused by sugar, but it most certainly is aggravated by it. Diabetes type 2 which in all practical purproses is caused by sugar they are aggravated by eating sugar and anyone with these problems will feel the beetus (and likely worse!).

I don't think someone who has a kid with diabetes needs a lecture on the specific causes of diabetes. And the sticker isn't about the problem of too much sugar in western society's food industries, it's literally just some lighthearted joke sticker. If it was in any way actually intended as educational or some kind of social awareness it could just say there's too much sugar in most processed foods, or even just "You really don't need that much sugar." It doesn't need to be diabetes specific to have the same joke.

it's a cute sticker but if i'm being completely honest, i also wasn't a fan of the item's description when i first saw it. i'm not like, Heinously Offended over it but it admittedly kinda bummed me out :/

These complaints are more geared toward the problem of diabetes itself and not the sticker, or even the joke behind it. This is literally the same thing as complaining about someone eating too much food or being grossed out by something and saying they've got the "itis", and then swearing up and down that you're making fun of people who have eating disorders or an immunodeficient system. When its just not what that is. Ugh.

I'm sorry you feel that way.

I don't honestly think I've ever heard a joke made about children suffering from type 1 diabetes. I mean I've heard plenty of jokes about other terrible things. I've heard plenty of jokes about type 2 which is definitely what the sticker is about since an excessive intake of refined sugar likely contributes to it's development.

It's also partially a Wilford Brimley joke. He's got type 2. I don't think I've ever had a non serious conversation about diabetes without pronouncing it diabeetus or beetus. It's an old old old old joke.

i really don't like to get involved in discourse on a website for virtual cartoon animals and dressup dolls and i'm not gonna name names or ping pings but it seems wildly inappropriate to lowkey insult the parent of a diabetic child by implying they're a "special snowflake". this is the feedback forum, not the debate forum and OP was completely polite. kind of weird how some of you are more offended than OP seems to be? Just @ me next time home slice. But you know what, maybe I was insensitive. Let me start apologizing. I'm sorry OP's child has diabetes. I'm sorry that they have to suffer any kind of stigma or hate because of it. And I'm sorry that an item on a website for virtual cartoon animals and dressup dolls was enough to make them feel like it was not only targeting their child, but the whole of the diabetic society. Truly I am.

Now here's a quote from OP's post:

Since OP knowingly pointed this out, this sounded like the start of a debate over a harmless word, not actual genuine feedback. You know what happens when people get angry at slang words or other things used for fun? Pepe the frog becomes racist.

EDIT: Also as someone else pointed out :

EDIT: Also as someone else pointed out : since when is calmly pointing out that an item on a website may contain unintentional ignorance not the literal definition of feedback? they're directly referencing the content of this website and giving their opinion on said content. and nice try but uh, you're not going to bait me into a discussion about... the alt-right's usage of memes (?!) i'm also not sure where you're picking up that anyone's getting angry because it certainly isn't anywhere in OP's post ¯(ツ)

as for your edit, i can read the topic on my own, but thanks i guess! i have no idea why you feel the need to point this out to me considering i have absolutely no stake in this discussion, seeing as i'm neither personally affected by diabetes or someone who feels compelled to valiantly defend the internet's apparent sacred right to make 'beetus' jokes. anyways, i'd rather not derail any further from the topic itself so i'm gonna peace out and drink some , since we're all linking items. cheers!

With truly no offense intended, I think because your child is suffering from the illness, the description hits closer to home (understandable). The item to me seems fine, as it appears to be a reference to a series of fairly well-known diabetes-related commercials. Furthermore, to me, this item reads similar to if there was a cigarette item that says 'the lung cancer is coming'. Because yeah, if you smoke cigarettes that's a risk. If your diet is ONE THOUSAND PERCENT sugar, you would also risk developing diabetes. I do not think this sticker is targeting children/persons with type 1 diabetes, just as the cigarette example would not be targeting people who have metastatic cancer in their lungs from lymphoma, etc.

Not looking for a debate or anything dramatic, just wanted to put my thoughts down that I support leaving the sticker as is. ^_^; Just my silly personal opinion is all...

Mm... If your first thought of someone giving polite feedback with their concern of an item, is to call them a special snowflake, I think it's time to take a step back and think about why that's your defensive go-to. This is the feedback forum, after all, if someone has a concern over an item, it comes here no matter how absurd one might think it is, imo. Times change, and sometimes things just come across a bit crass without that being the intent, even if the item in question doesn't change it's still valuable to understand going forward

That being said, I personally don't much care for the joke either, it's just not my thing. and considering both context and origin of the whole beetus thing I can see why this would come across a bit more distasteful to others.

The fact that everyone is more offended by me using the special snowflake item tells me something: I got worked up over a slang term on a sticker, just like the OP. OP I'm sorry that your thread turned into such a mess because of me. I got defensive because so many times people like to open with "As so and so, this is a thing I find problematic because xxx" and it leads into people just wanting to be right instead of wanting genuine feedback. I admit I got extremely defensive here, and sure, thats my fault for assuming. I'm going to try to relate here and say that I lost a family member to diabetes in 2017. He was my stepdad. He let his condition get so bad he got pancreatic cancer because of it due to not taking proper care of himself. I was quite upset at him because it put my mom in a bad position and I ended up having to take care of her. Which I'm not upset over at all~ However, if I were to tell someone about my step-dad passing from diabetes and they responded with "OMG HE DIED FROM BEETUS", I wouldn't be mad at the word itself, I'm going to be mad at the PERSON. Theres a time and a place to be upset about something that reminds you of a bad event or bad condition, and an item description on a petsite with 1,000 users isn't it. If someone were using this item maliciously and sending it you to make you feel bad, then that would be a whole nother problem. But there isn't a problem here. Just a light-hearted joke behind a disease that isn't so light-hearted, and I think its something we should try to remember: good can come out of bad. Your child is fighting and surviving, when it could be much worse.

Ahhh, didn’t intend for this topic to start a debate. It’s true the item description hits closer to home for me cus my four year old daughter got diagnosed less than a year ago, yes.

Whether anyone here agrees with my points or not - I just wanted to give my feedback. As is the purpose of this area of the forums.

I’m not necessarily ‘offended’ or seeing myself as not having thick skin. I just thought the description itself with the item wasn’t, for the lack of a better word, correct.

Thank you to whomever had kind words and sorry for any arguments that my post caused! Honestly was just trying to give my feedback haha.

Honestly, I hate the "beetus" jokes, too. And frankly for a site that often tries to paint itself as being more progressive it's just sad and distasteful. I'm sorry the thread has taken such a nasty turn.
