Personally, I don't believe the item/description needs to be changed. It's a cute item itself, and the description is definitely a reference to an internet meme. I don't feel it's malicious, or attacking people with diabetes.
Two admins have already told everyone to remain on topic. Now here's the forum's MM saying the same thing. :) If OP wants it locked, OP can request their board be locked. If you absolutely must continue discussing other topics, you are welcome to take your conversation to mail or comments, not throw OP under the bus as a guise for continuing to derail their board.
this is pretty common in the forums tbh, why are people allowed to make snowflake/triggered jokes at people who are very politely asking a question?
I do think the item description needs to be changed, even if it's based on an old joke, it's SUCH outdate humor, we can do better.
Hm. My knee-jerk reaction was to say it's obviously not intended to be about type 1, but then I thought about it.
Even though /I/ know that, I think when we make jokes about diabetes in general, it contributes to the misunderstanding about Type 1 vs. Type 2. Obviously people don't intentionally joke about Type 1 IF they know the difference, but many people still DON'T know the difference. As OP said, more and more people, especially children, are being diagnosed with Type 1. These jokes contribute to stigmas held by uneducated people and directly contribute to more misinformation and confusion about a subject that's becoming more relevant in our society.
For this reason I support the item description being changed. It's not because it's inherently offensive, but because it contributes to a continued misunderstanding about a disease that, unlike most others, has 2 different types/causes that are still often misunderstood. We shouldn't contribute to that, in my opinion.
lol I know I am late to the party as always buuuut...
I don't see the issue here. This is a sticker about sugar therefore the description chose to be about a contributing factor of type 2 diabetes, which is diet and excess sugar, which contributes to insulin resistance. I don't think this sticker owes anyone an education about the types of diabetes, because it's not a diabetes sticker. It's a sugar sticker which is being conflated into being a diabetes / diabetes representation sticker.
I also don't think a subeta item description is the place for health education. I thought that's why we don't have the debate forum, because the logic behind that is well, there are better places than subeta to debate hot button or heavy topics. So I don't see why this frame of logic cannot apply to item descriptions. Besides, if you were to educate about type 1 diabetes, you should by the very token of being inclusive, educate about other types of diabetes like diabetes in pregnant women, MODY, LADA, etc., or at least be stating upfront there are also other forms of diabetes, not just types 1 and 2. But again, I really don't think subeta should be the public health platform. If this is seriously being considered, I think the debate forum should be brought back because the reason to close it would have been a moot point.
To add, let's not forget that humor is considered a mature defence mechanism. Not that humor is the reason the OP wants the sticker changed, but thought I would mention that.
So yeah, while I'm happy that you are more educated about diabetes, and unfortunately through personal circumstances, I still don't see how this sticker discriminates against diabetes or owes diabetes anything.
That's kinda like saying you can't say a cigarette can cause lung cancer because there are other types of lung cancers when like yeah there are other types of lung cancers, but ... cigarettes are still contributing factors of lung damage and cancer. And I think people should educate themselves about their own biases if they think that only cigarettes can cause lung cancer i.e. only one thing causes another.
