Dang, took me a few tries to remember my Google password.
Definitely going for option . A little freedom to be flexible is far better than a blanket ban. "Foreign" words are best approved on a case by case basis.
Some people will undoubtedly get their undies in a bunch over a decision they don't agree with.., it's inevitable, human nature and human error being what it is, but that is what the ticket system is for.
In case you weren't already aware of this issue, please read the first post and consider option 2 so we all can continue being creative.

Voted for for so many reasons. Primarily because we don't need unnecessary rules that limit freedom of expression and creativity. Also because it's respectful in certain instances: you should be able to call an item of traditional culture-specific attire by its proper name, which might be a non-English word.
Banning the words outright seems so... I mean I know this isn't the intention but it just feels like it would be a weirdly xenophobic move to me.
Thanks for asking the community!
Voted for the 2nd option. Cause I think that variety is the spice of life. I firmly believe that interest in other cultures starts from the mixture of words specific to one's language and images that represent these words (at least this works for me). And some currently existed CWs beautifully represent this idea. As a result, some users who are not initially involved in some cultures concept could find themselves wondering and even researching about it after just a brief interaction with a certain CW. And I think it's wonderful! Of course boundaries are needed. But as far as I see (a common buyer/wearer of other's CWs) the moderation of staff members is working great. So I see no point in banning all foreign words.

i'm totally fine with staff making judgement calls a la option 2; i personally feel confidant that i could open a ticket if i didn't agree with staff's call on one of my items and have a discussion about it (and i'm not good at tickets-- anyone on staff can pretty much confirm i overthink everything and link 2598295 things lmao ;; ).
I DO agree that the enforcing of this rule has been more lax recently than it has been in the past, however this hasn't personally bothered me at all. i thought it was cool that so much freedom was being given in the naming & descriptions of items lately. we have a lot of users from a lot of different places.
my only 2 cents is that i think when folks are using foreign words in their item names, sticking to just using nouns rather than nouns + adverbs is probably easiest! there have been a couple of items with extra adverbs/descriptors that have come out to be a bit of a mouthful when added to the english component of the CW names, even if the reader understands them.
I share in the sentiment that this should really be a regular-site-poll with a news post. If I wasn't part of a couple ping groups called here I would not know this conversation was happening.
Option 1 is so narrow. There are so many words we borrow from other languages, sometimes without even realizing it. This seems like it would disallow way too many words to be reasonable.
Just thinking to myself since I saw this post yesterday - I studied Spanish in high school. I know loads of people who didn't take Spanish, but they still know hola (hello) and adios (goodbye) or si (yes) or caliente (hot).... It doesn't make sense to ban these words because there is a chance 1 person is going to name an item something offensive.
So option 2 makes more sense to me. Case by case decisions.
I'm sorry if I shouldn't have pinged any of these groups.... but this topic needs some more attention. :) Please take a look at the first post and consider voting for option 2.
Thank you for the ping!
Those CW makers among us, please check out the poll. :)
This is so subjective, but fine, if Subeta wants no foreign words period, guess I'm going to self freeze because my name technically is. And since the CW community tends to run this place anyways...

well in case you haven't seen this, see the first post for the poll. I went with option 2, keeping foreign words. How would we say baguette otherwise? French breadsword? (that's one for you ;p)
I voted for option 2 because while I haven't made a CW in several years I can't imagine a new user coming to the site and looking to buy a CW and searching something like "Kimono" and thinking there are barely any when instead all then newest ones had to be described as "Wrapped Garment".
Also one of those people that's a little biased because of my username haha

I say option two is the best option because English has borrowed words from other languages and some foreign words are commonly known to the masses. If the foreign word is commonly known it makes sense to accept it to me but if its one not many people know then a name adjustment is needed if that makes sense.

I can’t be the only one who just wants to know what HAPPENED! lol the issue couldn’t have been this serious.
Agree that this should be a news post and an official site poll. I think there have been too many decisions made by groups of Subeta players offsite lately. Thinking of the recent volunteer groups that you had to have Discord to be a part of. If we all have a Subeta account, why make things harder by requiring us to have an external account just to make our opinions heard?
Back again to add my support that there should be a news post about this linking to the thread. This is too important to take a chance that we'll reach a high enough percentage of the userbase just with pings. It's not fair if only a small percentage get the vote.

I'm voting Option 2. I have no problems/issues/concerns about foreign language.
When pigs fly, I want to ride one.
I have a comment about how some users here think that this should be a huge deal public poll.
I have moderated some boards and sites in the past, and literally (seriously, I did the math and the statistical analysis, it's very close to) ninety five percent of the people are only interested in the actual subject of the board/site. The other five are ...problematic. They want to throw a big tantrum about every detail of the Rules and who gets to make them and they want to do it in public so that everyone can admire their transcendent skill at screaming. Anyone who expresses the least bit of displeasure at this and can we get back to having fun? They also get thoroughly ranted-at.
My solution, and the solution of many of my co-moderators of these sites/message boards has been to make a public place asociated with, but separate for them to scream in. Otherwise, they're pretty relentless. Not all of them deserve the banhammer, and because they do care (a lot) they're otherwise a virtue and a benefit to have them around. Subeta already does this, this should not be a surprise to anyone.
's decision to limit the ability of these folks to dramaqueen insures that only people who are paying attention and really do care about "how the rules work" in addition to "let's have some fun" can have an opinion. She has given plenty of time for the word to get out. It is IME a good decision.
I may be misunderstanding your post, and if I am, I'm sorry! The title of this thread is a little misleading but this poll is about CWs specifically. Your username and other aspects of the site would not be effected. :) (I just didn't want you to be worried, if you were!)
Huh, I didn’t think of it like that. That makes sense as much as I don’t want it to, ha. tbh from the outside looking in, getting pinged to this from a random ping group and having very little information to go off of.. one of the main things for me was that this was a.. non-issue that was also somehow made an issue, and now there’s a poll offsite that will decide whether CWs are allowed to use ANY “foreign” words, which is a real slippery slope and an issue the site has a pretty poor track record on. I’ve been making a stink about the whole offsite communication thing for a while now as well, it’s a bit exclusionary and for a decision as important (and potentially influential to future site-wide rules) as language allowances to be made offsite, even if it is a non-issue that is also somehow an issue. Just cuz this poll was mostly for show doesn’t mean the next one will be, y’know?
IMO it is a non-issue. Your concern is a valid one and is appreciated by me.. I like it when other users love this site as much as I.
IMO staff here do care about what people think. I haven't seen any evidence that Jessi doesn't. If any other issue is a big deal in the future, it is my own opinion that she will open it out in the way that you have suggested, because y'know she's cool like that.
If I recall correctly, I think that Subeta has a rule about the use of foreign language being used in forums/threads???? Is this correct? I don't want to post something that is incorrect. If this is correct, I understand the point of this, as Subeta was created by an english speaking person/group of people and it is the language most widely used by members. However, I also know that Subeta is a site widely used by people from many countries around the world and english is not their first (or primary) language. While I know that this topic is about CWs and not forums, I think that if this is something allowed for naming items, it should also be okay for people to (sometimes) converse in their native language. We may all be able to learn new things.
I (being American and english speaking) feel that it would be in poor taste to the members here who are not American or primarily english speaking, to not allow them to impart a piece of their culture into the CWs that they work hard to create. CWs are the work of members on this site and as PEOPLE, we all have traditions and practices in our cultures that we are proud of. If someone wants to share that with others, they should be allowed to do so.
CWs are a way for members to express themselves and they are not items that members have any obligation to work to get. I think that if we are all going to be part of this community, we all need to be accepting of each other. Making this site's fundamental culture revolve around one language means we are excluding many, MANY cultures and also not acknowledging the importance of other languages and cultures that create the world that we live in.
So, I did vote! I think that words/item names should be allowed in other languages. I think that this will keep this site inclusive of all members from around the world and give them a place that they are accepted and they feel they belong. I do not think it is right to put up a language barrier and restrict so many people from sharing who they are and where they come from.
I don't know the backstory on how or why this issue arose, or maybe someone was upset because somewhere along the way a rule changed and they got upset for whatever reason.... I can honestly say that I have had my upsets on Subeta as well. However, life goes on. The staff does a great job with the site. NONE of us can ever fully know the time and effort put in behind the scenes. And YOU as well as the rest of us, are only human. Keep your head up! Keep doing the best you can do. We all have good days and bad days. Not everything in life works out in our favor (and it can be very upsetting and frustrating). But we can choose how we handle these situations. We all appreciate that you (the staff) have allowed us to have a voice in many things that go on here, but unless this situation is something that has been widely argued over, I don't think that one or two people being upset about, whatever they are upset about, the use of certain words as items names, warrants going through the trouble of changing a whole set of rules.
