oh i know (and i'm super glad it's not an end-all be-all, i trust you to work with the community)! i meant mostly on the not-staff side, i think if we come up with suggestions on how to clear up the rules for ourselves, this will be easier on everyone - for you to apply, for us to use, etc! much like there had to be feedback for the new cw system, i think we should be trying to work out how to make it better :Ia if that makes sense
What an extreme response for something so minor. Unless the foreign word is legitimately offensive, (like a swear/serious slur,) I see no reason to even address this non-issue. Not to mention it's doubly racist to call a Kimono a "gown" or "Robes" just to try and avoid an already appropriated culture. Like, kawaii has become as common as "cool" and what have you. Who's complained to the point where this had to become a thing? Why is this even a thing????
this needs more attention. There's a google poll going on in the first post of this thread. Basically, the staff is considering banning ALL foreign words from CW names due to some denial drama in CW's. This will effect practically all creators and any potential ones too so please go to the first post and vote for option 2. (You must be signed into a google account to vote.)
Hello sorry to come back, I realized this would be a problem if option 1 is accepted
with a word like sakura that has an english translation, but what about hanbok its not in the merriam-webster but its still a traditional clothing style of korea that doesnt have an "alternative english name" if its name is banned ppl will be forced to call it alternatives and not what they are, or they wouldnt be able to find future submissions of hanboks
its why i think a blanket ban wouldnt be effective or useful

Please read the first post. Vote for option 2 will let us have the freedom of name our items how they deserve when there's no an english word for them to represent them. Thanks.

whoaaaa thank you for the ping I'll go vote.
An idea if the vote is to allow foreign words there could be a place in submission that allows for what the language and meaning is to be checked? Just an idea ♡
I just wanted to say thank you for all that you do. (And that’s a lot of CW names to try to keep straight.) o_O Your job can be tough enough- I don’t understand why people are trying to make it so much more complicated by closing off the naming to just English words.
After reading these posts (and some in the past) it just seems to me the best thing is to keep allowing foreign words. Decide case by case as is done now if I’m reading that correctly. I voted- allowing for foreign words.
Honestly the Subeta world itself is filled with ethnicity- why would we restrict the possible usage of a particular word just because it’s not English....

I'm not sure what prompted such a reaction but, I think a news post announcement pointing all fellow users in the direction of the poll, and a time extension on the poll to last into Masquerade, when most users will be online for sure, is in order. Every Subeta user should be able to have their answer recorded and have a say in this matter.
Please don't get angry with me, as I'm only wondering why this matter isn't more site wide than just this forum thread?
You all do CWs and should have a say in this. Please ping others that you know that make their own CWs.

As someone who is amused by this whole situation: This is a knee-jerk reaction to a few complaints. It's presumably hoped that most people are reasonable and will reject option 1 so the status quo can continue (and so staff can be 'in the right' when reviewing CWs), but unfortunately many humans aren't reasonable and CWs may be backed into an illogical corner over this. Plus it's just stressful for users.
As a linguist: this reeks of prescriptivism and isn't even reasonable to monitor - English is full of words from other languages, with more being added all the time. No one knows all words in the English language. Not all dictionaries are the same. Etc.
As a user of the site: not everyone subscribes to this ping, and going offsite like this is very exclusionary, particularly when actual onsite systems exist. This is unprofessional.
Not looking to fight or be pinged, just giving my opinions. c: I have nothing against Jessi.
After reading through all the posts on this thread, it's my perspective that opening a poll for this was an extreme reaction over ONE incident in a CW submission denial regarding a foreign word. I feel like this incident should have remained a one-on-one issue to resolve and that it was unnecessary to involve the entire Subetan community to vote in a poll where I think it's obvious what the result will be. As others have said, the poll isn't even really a fair option here, as I think it's obvious that most users will vote for option 2.
Voted in the poll. I'm fine with foreign words in CW names. I have a couple of objections to banning them: 1) the question of what to call articles of clothing with no English name or items named things like "purrito" (derived from a non-English word that is common in English). 2) I don't see how foreign words would be any more confusing for users than any other unusual clothing names. IMO, the official item "Bowl of Bloody Worms" is a lot less intuitively named than "Strawberry Mochi Strands of the Kuudere" (to totally make up a CW name). This point also falls flat for me because CW shops have full-body previews of all the items anyway.
If the current naming rules have worked for 55k+ items, then I say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies. Rejecting items on a case-by-case basis is fine by me, as is the "only one foreign word per item" rule someone suggested upthread.

I definitely think foreign words should be allowed. Not every is a primary English speaker and it seems... like, xenophobic to deny every other language (even if subeta itself is a majority English site).
I voted, and I'm A-OK with foreign words in CWs. Previously, I've been shy of saying anything, but I'm seeing increasing frustration directed toward the mods over the foreign language rules. English isn't my only language, but this still makes me sad.
From what I understand, the site rules are designed to allow reasonable expectations of its small staff. Now, this is our choice: we have to accept that a small team of people will do their best. If we can't accept that, then there will simply be no allowance.
I've said it before, but there's probably legal reasons this rule has to be enforced. Because taking responsibility for a public forum/space and being liable for everything that happens here means that if something were to occur in a language the mods didn't understand, they are still legally responsible lol. They also probably want to avoid lawsuits (iirc that's the 10-change reason behind tribute items). This extends into CWs and seems annoying to us, but it's part of just enforcing the rule equally over all parts of the website.
for what it's worth! I too always like to work things out one-on-one whenever possible, which is why I encourage tickets! It is the easiest way to walk through things with a person and hopefully find a resolution. In this case, I have been lead to believe it is more than one issue with this due to broad complaints. Unfortunately that is all I have to go off of.
Also, more of a general reply, but I've already written up some really great clarifying things that I think will help all this immensely. I said I would leave the poll up until Sunday morning, and I want to keep that promise, but I want to assure everyone that I'm prettyyyy confident things will work out okay :)
I vote for opinion 2, part of the name of any item on subeta is attached to its culture. Seriously being attached to its culture is part of its identity. Seriously losing identity to a culture, is a lose of culture. Which we need to preserve in any way we can, whether here or in RL.
I am American but pro culture and identity for any nation in the world.
come read first post and vote if you like
Don't know what originated all of this, but voted for option 2. I hate close-mindedness in any form.
