I have always been a-okay with how you decide on which foreign words/phrases are fine and which aren't and I'm sorry that people are making it seem like there's lots of folks from the CW community who're having tons of issues with you/CW related stuff. I haven't really seen that from my end and I do see a lot of group conversations and such that really do not indicate to me that "most" or "lots" of CW creators/releasers are having problems, so I really don't know where that whole idea is coming from.

ANYHOW, on point, I hope option 2 wins because I love to use Latin words for stuff sometimes (especially when naming my colors after plants).

I'm not even that interested in CWs most of the time, but I came over from the feedback thread to vote for option 2 just because the first option seems so silly. I don't really understand why a whole rule would need to be changed in such a major way just because of the complaints of what seems like a very small number of people? Anyway...

Really, this entire thing reads like a reminder that, if you have/had any issue & you think it should have been fine, bring it up in a ticket & find out more/why.

I think of Subeta as a world site and I think if someone wants to name their CW a name from their country they should be able to. I think the variety of names from different parts of the world makes our site unique.

This seems... extreme, and I agree with others that it doesn't actually present a real choice. I don't usually have a problem with foreign words in CWs, but if change is necessary then would it not be easier to just run a submission with foreign language in it by another staff member, who isn't as familiar with the language itself? Or something? There are so many other, simpler solutions.

Tbh all I really want is consistency across item names. The example I gave in Discord of "cherry blossoms" vs "sakura" works just as well here, but things like "midori" instead of "green" or "shiroi" instead of "white" just seem pointlessly complicated without a color tag system in place to be able to find items that are named by color in a different language. :'(

I voted for but I think if happened we'd have to have a lengthy discussion on "no exceptions" since the English language is chock full of loan words and phrases. I'm obviously not going to argue with anyone here, but I think that certain words (if not easily identifiable as a loan word) could be rejected. Like, on the other site a pet got an Ao Dai and I had to google what that was, but one of my Vietnamese friends knew right away and was excited. So like, a little googling is ok I guess, but if you have to google a word that's not immediately obvious, maybe reconsider it?

I think maybe the main point of this poll is to acknowledge and agree that by voting for option 2, we continue to allow Jessi to use their own discretion as to what foreign words make sense to approve and which ones would cause too much confusion, especially in regards to 's example above in which accepting "shiroi" instead of "white" would be confusing when trying to find "white" items in the wardrobe. I think Jessi will do their best to make that determination, and as Jessi stated, if anyone has an issue with a CW denial, they can send in a ticket.

I was alerted here by a group ping and I'm glad I was. I kinda wish this was an official site poll instead of a google one but still I voted to allow all words. I'm not sure of the context or anything (I pretty much keep a low profile and spend my time in my wardrobe) but I appreciate people's creativity with use of other languages in place of more common words. Plus it allows the people who create the CIs to be a little more flexible with creating something unique. With so many CWs on the site, its honestly a wonder such a small team pulls it off.

I appreciate all the work that goes in to CWs both onsite and off-site by artists, shop owners and staff. People make mistakes and all it takes is a ticket, some patience and understanding.

Hmm. I'm kind of ambivalent about it, leaning slightly toward using foreign words being okay. I mean, we've literally have a pet color that's a Japanese word since... I dunno, practically the beginning? At least over 15 years, since Chibis existed when I started playing. It seems kinda silly to want to whine about foreign words being used now.

And the English language itself is literally a mishmash of foreign words that were squashed into a weird ass druggie's parameters for a language and then put into production. Do we really need to join a group of whiny Karens and nitpick "this is an English site so only use English!" rants?

Option 1 is not really much of an option.

Unless a specific online dictionary that everyone can access is chosen (and most of those do include some 'foreign' words--the US Merriam-Webster that tossed out there sure does), this has amazing potential for wank regarding the issue of when a loanword becomes part of the English language. English and Japanese are two languages that beat up other languages in dark alleys to steal their words for their own use (and they often use them in really weird ways).

Loanwords come from another language but they're also legitimately part of the language that 'borrowed' them. Café and burrito and fiancé are English words, now. There's not another word for 'burrito' and most people don't say 'betrothed' anymore :)

I would argue that some Japanese words, such as 'kimono', 'anime' and 'sushi' have already become loanwords. What else would you call those things?

Other Japanese words, such as 'kawaii' and 'chibi' are well on their way to becoming loanwords.

People who don't know as much Japanese as I do use words like 'chibi' and 'kawaii' because they express a concept that there isn't a single English word for. 'Chibi' is more than just 'small', it's 'small and rounded and cutesy'. 'Kawaii' is more than just 'cute'. For one thing it also means 'pretty' and there are many things that are cute but not pretty.

There's a difference between 'Hang Dao', 'Katana' and 'sword'.

'Sakura' refers to the cultural significance of the cherry blossom, and 'hanami' doesn't just mean 'going out to look at flowers' (which is a lot of words), it also refers to a specific cultural tradition. These are the kinds of words that I don't think should be denied.

That said, there have recently been several items that went through with names that were completely in Japanese.

Please note--everything I'm saying here applies to all foreign languages, not just Japanese! But Japanese and French are the only languages other than English that I can read at all well, and Japanese is the only language that people on the site are currently using to this extent.

If the name of your item is something along the lines of "blue and green shark" in Japanese, I kinda think you should just call it "Blue and Green Shark". Or "Cerulean and Chartreuse Shark" if you want to be fancy.

Since the concepts you're expressing are easy to express in English, very few English speakers are going to use those words or understand the name of your item. I've had a couple of people ask me what 'kuroi' means recently. It means 'black'.

Most people don't know it unless they've studied Japanese, because, unlike 'kawaii', there's no good reason to use it in English conversation. We don't need to use Japanese to describe colours, animals not endemic to Japan/Asia, or common objects. In those cases, I think a denial is justified, and I'm surprised that it doesn't happen more often.

And since we don't let people converse completely in another language on this site (for the very good reason that the mods can't tell if the rules are being broken or not), I don't think we should have items that are named completely in another language, or use Japanese words that have exact equivalents in English without any cultural connotation or extra levels of meaning.

I might be a little salty about this because I got a warning for 'posting in a foreign language' (Spanish) when I was quoting a Taco Bell commercial that has become a well-known meme.

I definitely think that people are more likely to get away with using Japanese (and to a lesser degree, Korean) on this site (as long as they use the English alphabet) than they are to get away with using words from languages that are far more common among the site's userbase, like Spanish and Chinese. And I'm not sure that is entirely fair.

much as I would like consistency in names too, it just isn't going to happen, there are so many different shades of each color all with their own names, and that's not even counting people assigning value judgements to the colors, like "wrathful" "lustful" "corrupted" "flirty" "pure" etc. So foreign words are just one more thing and not all of them even refer to color either. A red is never just gonna be "red" here.

I personally don't even see how option 1 is an option considering how many words describe items from other cultures in which there are not other names. I personally have cast my vote for continuing the use of foreign words in the creation of CWs and I hope my will too. The pole is in the first post. =)

At first I thought I was one of the persons who never had a problem having my CW names all in English, and then I realized that yeah I have submitted my fair share of common foreign words that I forgot weren't english' like 'matcha' or 'kawaii' and lets be real 'loot box' doesn't strike the same primal fear than 'gacha' does. I'll definitely try to be more mindful going forward. There is no english equivalent for a tsundere WHAT DO I DO?

I'm really sorry that some people seem to have a problem with this and for what it's worth I thought you were doing a great job where approval/denial or foreign words are concerned and never had an issue at all! I really think it would be such a shame to ban the use of all foreign words and I think it's gonna be a pain to enforce as well (everyone would be filing tickets about 'sakura' and 'chat' and 'blanc' and 'noir' and so on and so forth) Making the rules for banning ALL the foreign words is far too much work for not a lot of gain!

Lastly in terms of consistency in searching for items of the same color (Black instead of Kuro/Noir) I personally have released probably over 20 white items and I don't think a single one of them has the word 'white' in the name. Most people use different words like pure/ethereal/or if you're me, whatever random word of the day you like because it sounds nicer/more creative. While I do admit sometimes it might be nice to type white and see every white wig on subeta we've long passed that station, this is not the hill to die on.
