We're aware there was an incident that began around 2 AM and lasted throughout the morning. The cause was unrelated to the opening of the pawn shop. I'll ask if he can post a little more here about what happened (but please understand if he is not able to disclose more information)
Things seem to be loading decently fast right now though - at least on my end? Is that the case for you guys too?

I took the time to list how we've been communicating over this, so we can see what we did right, and where we dropped the ball:
12/2 - Brief period of 404 errors, addressed here.
12/5 - Keith posts a response with some questions about the lag to help him debug it
12/6 - Keith explains another fix he tried and people reply that they notice it helps a lot.
12/14 - Reya (one of our lovely minimods!) made a staff post as Keith and I were too busy coding during the week to post.
12/16 - That brings us to my update this morning and today.

Firstly... we want to thank you for sticking by us for so long.
You've seen us through 10 years, and that's awesome. It's been frustrating on both sides; sometimes we feel like we're in some kind of internet race where technology is moving so fast and we'll never quite catch up! But we're not giving up on the race. We'll be taking that participation medal, and we appreciate everyone that's helped us not give up - by being here with us.
What we'd like to say is... please don't give up on us. We're so close. You can see how close we are just on this topic - we've defeated the lag more than a few times, we just have to make it stick!
Please don't feel bad for using your voice. We care to see that YOU care, and you (all of you!) are the reason we keep trying.
I'm going to just say it: I started this thread in the hopes of helping the programmers track down the source of the issues, I would really prefer not to see it locked because it dissolved into jabs and insults.

Thank you for the update , today seems like the site's running much smoother, and hopefully today I'll be able to finish my quests ^^
Also, I might be tearing up a bit, thank you . No, I'm not giving up on you guys ❤️, but while I know things have gotten better, and the whole Team's doing their best to keep up and deliver us a better Subeta with each maintenance, update, and whatnot, sometimes it just feels like 'what's the point', because we still get the lag with not even that many people online. I think it was mostly the frustration talking yesterday: I had almost 12 hours to quest, and I couldn't even finish before getting busy IRL)
But yeah, I'm sticking around ^^
Ok... where the heck did this batch of lag come from the Site was working just fine and then BAM! Lag city... yikes...
I know this post was a little earlier in the evening, but I've been having off and on issues all night on my end. :'(
It's so bad now that the site is pratically unusable. I tried different browsers just to make sure but it didn't help. It feels odd to see you just go on with a new event - is that lag something regional? Does the site work fine for others? Must be that.
...... -sigh- I just didn't understand... ;-; the site was working fine enough and now it just keeps stalling... a lot....
Yes I noticed that too, a few minutes after two and it's like the site slammed into a wall ... D:
The lag is winning...can't do my gifting, or anything else for that matter. Looks like the Grinch has stolen Luminaire. (sigh)
When I first got on tonight I thought it was going to be really, really bad. Pages didn't want to load at all (everything was 'waiting on img.subeta, waiting on subeta' etc). Drop down menus wouldn't even load/acknowledge that you were hovering - a level of lag I haven't seen in a long, long, long time.
But then a few minutes later it cleared up quickly and seemingly (fingers crossed hard) near totally?
Not sure if posting this will be helpful or not but figured I would just in case. I'd started trying to load this thread to post about the lag and it finally loaded with the burst of improvement/the fix (I'm scared to jinx myself calling it that). It might just be on my end, but if changes were made to the site wide cache or something else that would behave like that they are v much working and a big thumbs up.
Edit: And I spoke a little too soon :c It's settled in to kind of a medium - pages are still loading pretty good, but the forums aren't so hot. This post struggled on "making your post now" for a while (although I did get a fairy and that sometimes seems to contribute to making that take longer even when the site is working so who knows) and the thread struggled to load when that was finally done too, though not as long.
When making this edit I got a weird little page jump load after the main page load that I have been noticing a lot lately, since around the time of the beginning of the really bad forum lag. I know ads are notorious for doing that, do we have a new ad provider? I have various blocking enabled so I don't actually see them, but maybe it's still jumping the page on me because it's partially bypassing the blocks? No idea. I just realized I'd been seeing it when it happened just now. It also deleted what little text I had already typed, so it might be something with the actual forum/post code? It was odd, for sure. I wish I had the Playstation 4 type always on screen recording because that would be the easiest way to show/explain it, hah. Might not even have anything to do with the lag, just figured I'd mention it.
Edit 2: Forgot to mention that after clicking the 'edit post' button the actual editable text box took for. ever. to load. Like so long I thought I clicked wrong. That said, the edit did appear instantly which is nice.
Edit 3: The "edit post" button that actually posts the edit (the blue one to the bottom right of the text box) did the same thing, which is frustrating since it doesn't have any indication it's loading/working (like 'making your post' when you post the first time). That said, the 2nd edit also showed instantly which was a problem a few days ago for sure, so yay. Also I haven't had any more page jumps but don't think editing actually reloads the page so not sure I would.
Earlier today things were slightly slow (not as fast as other sites are but ok for Subetal), tonight 15-20 seconds of whirling around before can get anywhere.. I'm on US CST btw, GMT-6
I usually have to wait to even see the Melody gifts.. :(
And apparently everything I said about the edits showing instantly was a lie :c
They showed for me on that page only, but once I reloaded the page they're gone (sure they'll show later). That wasn't what was happening when they weren't showing instantly a few days ago. Not editing it again to that effect.
Edit: (lol not sure why I'm bothering to edit since who knows when it will show but oh well) this post struggled on 'Making your post now...' and loading the page after it went through too, and I did not get a fairy this time. I'd say it was slightly shorter than the previous one (with fairy) but hard to really say for sure + there are other variables.
the site is basically nonfunctional at the moment and it is very frustrating. :(

Pretty much unplayable right now. Takes anywhere from 2-5 minutes to load a single page. I don't even know how long in total it took me to get to this point of trying to post.
Even when I manage to get all of the pages to load that are required to find a gift, I still can't get profiles to load for the trees. So frustrating!
The lag this morning is an absolute joke.
