I keep having to name places. The hard part is I basically have a chain of... ehh, I lost count how many islands. And each one has a name. And there should probably be at least one major city on each one. And they all need descriptive Japanese-inspired names that aren't actually real words (or are a play on real words). This crazy thing called writing that we do... clearly we are all masochists.

Weird, I just updated my word count on the site, and my average words per day is 1604, and yet my average words per day to finish on time is UNDER par at 1615. That does not math nano! shakes fist I trusted you!

: Dialogue is an artform unto it'self and is a fantastic way to sneak in some exposition without 'telling'. Dialogue is a 'show, don't tell' technique I use it to give me control over the timing of a story, usually to expand time. If I want to compress time, I 'tell' with exposition. " I love good dialogue. Steven King's story "The Shining" was brilliant in it's use of dialogue.

- I guess that's true. I have been struggling a bit with the whole "Show, don't tell" concept, but eventually I hope to script this to turn into a comic/manga so that's not as much of an issue for me, and dialogue is the main way of story telling in that genre, but too much dialogue and not enough visuals will just make it boring to read. Trying to find a balance is hard. Hopefully I can figure it out when I get to scripting.

I hear you on the word count numbers! 5s and 0s show up way more than expected.

I prose a LOT. The hard part is that a lot of parts in my stories end up taking place with only one character present, so the prose is essentially the MC's inner monologue. It's just the way I write. Dialogue would be awkward in that kind of situation because it would be the character talking to himself...

As long as the dialogue is moving the story forward, and not 5 pages of characters discussing their favorite socks, I think it's better to err on the side of too much rather than too little. I think it's easier to edit things out, then to go back and end new things in and catch the same feel to it that the original did at the time. But that may just be me. ;)
