It was down in the 20s last night and in the 30s today. It was cold! My son wanted to play at a playground near us, so we did, but only for a little bit. I'm not ready for next week, it'll be in the low 20s, with a few days in the teens. I'm not ready!

Definitely excited for survival though - I'm back from a super long hiatus, I think the last survival I actively took part in was maybe 2019?! Which feels crazy!

Happy Valentine's day everyone!

My goodness has it been a day. I currently work as an ABA therapist for children with autism, and I swear the kids were feeling that it was Friday today. Behavior levels were high across the board...On the bright side, so many families brought in cute valentine's goodies for everyone and they all got to decorate a Valetine's bag to bring them home in. My client loaded hers with an entire page of shiny stickers and I think it looked great! xD

Unfortunately I'm not really doing much for Valentine's day myself seeing as my girlfriend lives in another state and doesn't have great access to a computer or wifi so we can't watch anything together or play games or anything. We can at least talk though.

Oh, by the way, some good news! I finally got my official ADHD diagnosis, which means I can finally get medication for it! Woot! I have an appointment next month for that. Here's hoping that I start taking it and clean my whole house. It sure needs it.

I'm wanting to get into crochet. I'd love to learn to make little plushies!

I used to take medication for my ADD (back when I was diagnosed it was classified differently) but stopped during college.

I have some questions for you if you don’t mind 😊 I’m a bus monitor on the local school’s handicap bus and most of the kids are autistic. We have one boy, he is a third grader (10 years old) who challenges us almost daily. He doesn’t like noise and will yell and scream STOP or sometimes swear words. He will hit his head against the window, punch the window at times. He says random words but does not talk in sentences but will mimic what you say sometimes. Do you have any ideas of how I can calm him or stop him from hurting himself? The teachers just say “tell him no thank you” and that really doesn’t work. We do have a pop it toy he holds on the bus ride and I carry a few small toys in my pocket to give him to distract him. I just wish I knew what else I could do to help him. Would love any ideas or resources you might have or know of. So sorry to hear about your crazy day and oh boy, I understand about the kids having high behavior levels! We have Monday off for president day, hope you do too…hurray for a three day weekend 😂 I hope you had a nice Valentine’s Day and were able to talk to your girlfriend. If the noise of the bus is what's triggering the self-injurious behavior, I would definitely recommend some noise-cancelling headphones. The issue there is whether he'll wear them or not. Sometimes kids don't want to wear the headphones even though they will help them. Headphone tolerance is something we work on a lot in ABA, and perhaps it's something his teachers could work on with him...Granted by the sound of it, his teachers don't have any training in ABA. Saying "no thank you" will definitely not do anything when the problem is sensory overload.

Short lesson on ABA and running headphone tolerance if you want to try it yourself. (If you even need it. Maybe he'll be willing to wear them without this) You'll want to find something he really enjoys...candy, toys he likes, videos...just whatever he expresses interest in and use that as a reinforcer for wearing his headphones. Show him the item, confirm he's interested in it...either by him verbally indicating he wants it or reaching for it...and tell him "First wear your headphones for 5 seconds, then you can have insert item here"...I've found counting down from 5 in a cheerful voice helps with my client I run this with. Then reinforce with praise and the item. If he pushes them off before the 5 seconds are over, withhold the praise a bit and say in a more neutral voice "Okay, that was good trying" and still give him the item but for a shorter amount of time before trying again. Do this multiple times a day, and once he's consistently able to wear the headphones for 5 seconds without issue, raise it to 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2, etc
