Do you create art and overlays yourself, or do you commission them from others? I do all my own overlays, artwork, and image edits because I like to do everything on my pets' profiles myself. That said, my only overlays that aren't edited official art are Smiley's and Frowny's. And they're, uh... pretty simple ^^;

If you're an artist, what do you use to create your art and do you have recommendations for those of us who are considering trying to learn? I use a program called ArtRage, and Photoshop. ArtRage is really neat because it mimics traditional tools.

When it comes to art and overlays, do you feel a desire or need to make them "site official" or are you just as happy if they're simply on the profile? I wish I could make my art look like Subeta's, but I'm not nearly good enough ^^; Which is why I do have to commission art for my CWs, because I'd never be able to get them approved!

Is there anyone who's art you love, or someone who's pet design you are wow'd by? I think Chrysariel's overlays are always really lovely :)

I rescued a little orange and white piggie when I was younger, his name was nibbles (you're welcome for the un-asked-for back story lolol).

Aran's profile is awesome btw. You coooould add a fourth tab to the about / stats / personality area if you really wanted and have small previews of the art! Kinda like what I have on Booped's profile? You already know I totally dig Strat's art and profile and design!

I absolutely would love to invest the resources in learning how to make digital art / art I was proud of! I'm always done a bit here and there for my own enjoyment, but am just in awe of some of the amazing things truly talented folks create and would love to be even a fraction as good!

I don't do site official art atm, in part because it costs monies I don't have and in part because I haven't done a lot of in-depth character design as far as their appearances (I actually struggle to create and hold images in my mind, so unless I actually sit down and create it on paper it's hard for me to really know what they look like, I just know what they "feel" like) so I don't have a strong connection to seeing that version of them represented around the site. I mostly see them on their own profiles where the art and overlays exist and that works for me for now. I also don't tend to be quick in getting art either because it's not in the budget for me, too many things I need to pay for and too many bills we have to catch up on. But that's okay! I love seeing all the beautiful art around the site and marvel at the character designs folks create!

As to my pets; Booped has some of my favorite art. Huge shout out to for the beautiful profile art. In addition, made some of my favorite representations of Juneau and Tonks, and I love 's drawing of Kai. Also 's art of my pet Timothie deserves it's own shout out, I'm still in love with how amazing he looks and they did an excellent job taking my general ideas and turning it into something beautiful. I'm starting to put work into creating more unique and expanded visual representations of my characters, so maybe I'll be on the look out for more art in the future! For now I'm usually hitting up for overlays. She does an excellent job!

In addition; has some of my favorite character designs! I want to take Linneus home LOL. I'm also a big fan of their art! I can't remember now who the pet is, but the art was a kero from card captors version of the nostalgic kerubi and it was so freaking good! has some really cool pet designs! I love looking through all their characters!

Lmao yes. Despite how much I babble here, I'm pretty shy a lot of the time, so I love that this topic gives me an excuse to talk haha. I've always admired the way you customize templates for your pets AND you have that Zero Escape fanpet so obviously you're cool as hell and I'm glad to have an excuse to talk more than like... the one exchange we had in comments a year ago LOL. Oh, thank you for the response on my pet species/color woes! :') I am... steepling my fingers here. The clawsion is definitely a possibility. I already have a bloodred montre and kumos but hmmhmmmmmmm those do feel like they'd suit him and species swapping is always a possibility. It's hard to find the exact right personality because it's like, I want it to be vicious but not TOO vicious y'know?? Teiji is murder-y sometimes, but he's also a baby. I think for now I'm gonna keep him a bloodred ontra since I feel like I need to kinda update him a bit anyway (given that I haven't done anything with the character in like 5 years lmao), but thank you for the response, I appreciate it a lot. I hadn't even considered the montre and now I'm like... is this The One...? (I'd just have to change Liora ahaha, hopefully that would be easier.)

Anyway, week 12!!! Do you have a particular pet who's art or overlay you just adore? I'm too self-critical yet insistent on doing my own stuff haha. If recolor overlays count, I think the one I did for my angelic velosotor came out nice, although I unfortunately can't for the life of me settle on a character for him lol. Umm and now that I'm thinking about it, I do think the chibi for Jinelle came out pretty cute! :') I need to draw her a headshot that isn't a quick sketch and finish up her profile, ahaha... Do you create art and overlays yourself, or do you commission them from others? As a cheapskate, I'm very insistent on doing as much as I can on my own! I mostly like to use recolor overlays because I like the Subeta pet art so much, it feels weird to want to replace it with something else, y'know? There are a few cases where I wouldn't mind a redraw overlay though. But because I'm so self-critical of my own art, I really hesitant to make my own redraw pet overlays, haha. I feel like I am capable of imitating Subeta pet style, I'm just so nitpicky with my own art... ugh, I should stop being such a baby about it. Maybe I'll try to find one of my old sketches and give it another shot. If you're an artist, what do you use to create your art and do you have recommendations for those of us who are considering trying to learn? Oh god I could talk about this a LOT hahaha. It is the year 2024 and I still refuse to use any programs more complex than Paint Tool SAI. SAI is an incredibly comfy, lightweight program that IMO is quite simple to use, and it's pretty affordable! I use a Wacom Intuos Pro and I have for quite a few years now (because tablets are expensive and I am reluctant to upgrade unless I have to lol.) I am the opposite of in some ways - I prefer having a plug-in tablet because I have a tendency to lay my hand on my surface and this keeps me from covering half the screen, lol. It's a little awkward to go from traditional art to drawing on a tablet and looking at a monitor elsewhere, but I really do like it a lot better. I also had a Surface Pro at one point and I tried drawing directly on the screen a few times, but for me it had a lot more little annoyances. I do second their recommendations for line stability tho! It makes a huuuuge difference. Unfortunately I personally still hate doing lineart because even with line stability I always see all the little imperfections, lol. When it comes to art and overlays, do you feel a desire or need to make them "site official" or are you just as happy if they're simply on the profile? I don't really have a need to make my recolor overlays site official because a lot of them are pretty simple and I... I'm stupid about a lot of things and the word 'custom' being in the gender/species/color thing isn't my favorite thing hgdg;;; It just makes it look so much longer, okay.... I feel like there used to be a lot, but a lot of the users whose pets I used to stalk all the time are inactive now. :'c is still my favorite artist tho. Lol if you want to display more art on the profile, we could totally add another section, or make it another tab like mentioned. I had actually considered making a 'gallery' section on the profile but I just don't have that much art of most of my characters so it felt a bit excessive lol. Oof, I relate to the multiple pet emergencies close together thing. I wouldn't trade my babies for the world, but there are downsides LOL.

Funny story from years ago - my soul dog Juneau had idiopathic epilepsy, which meant at times we had to take her to emergency vets or even hospitalize her. One day we had to take her in to the ER so they could do an IV to make sure the cluster of seizure activity stopped. We were there for hours. Finally got home, walked in the door, and found our sweet girl Tonks drunk as a skunk because the cat had knocked down Juneau's pills and Tonks ate some. I literally put Juneau down on the couch, gave my husband instructions, picked Tonks up, and walked right back out the door. Walked into the ER like "heeeey, same girl different dog what up". (Sometimes you have to laugh so you don't cry right?). They gave Tonks some charcoal to make her puke, which brought up multiple hair ties that had "gone missing", gave her fluids, and we went back home. What a day! xD Easy to laugh after the fact, because what are the odds lol.

I completely understand the species / color struggle! I just spent ages going round and round on Feyne / Mirio / Kotori because I was thinking of adding a fourth pet (if I found someone who had a name with the letter "a" in it that matches the naming pattern vowel - letter - same vowel or vowel - letter x2 - same vowel) so trying to decide on one species where I liked the art for all three of the colors I wanted to use and / or two separate species where I liked the art for two "pairs" and then if I changed them I would end up changing Aphelion and possibly two pets I was looking to adopt so I could still use the sp/col I was getting rid of and ... yeah xD Thankfully I came to a decision (though I still also have a plan if I do add a fourth) but not without ending up buying more potions than I would have needed if I hadn't flip flopped multiple times.

Thank you! OMG I've been trying so hard to shape more complete characters with these three so that makes me so happy! Yeah, my best friend got me hooked on the books! I did ACOTAR first, then CC books 1 and 2, now I'm making my way through TOG, then CC book 3. My best friend is actually reading the TOG series (for like the 5th time) with me LOL. She gets a kick out of me texting her play by plays of my emotions when I come to twists hahaha. There is so much cool creative world building stuff between the three different series. My husband is a huge Brandon Sanderson fan so once I finish these books I'm going to dive into the bajillion books he's written. Too many books, not enough time :')

Oh my gosh! Kuja looks gorgeous, I really like the colors you chose. And I think Jinelle's art is great! I totally get being self-critical, and as an artist I'm sure your perspective is very different from mine lol. But I think the art looks really great and you should be proud of it!

I think it's cool to keep the subeta official art as the pet image, then use unique art on the profile. I too really like a lot of the subeta pet art and am lucky to find species and colors that truly fit my ideas most of the time. So it's cool to keep the representation. That being said, I think my pets so far have been more story-based than developed deeply as individuals, so I think unique overlays make a ton of sense for creative pets who are better represented by their true appearance.

(Also, I'd probably end up living in a cardboard box because I have so many characters and I'd spend all my income on all the art I'd like to have. Adulting is dumb. LOL)

Unfortunately, my art skills are...cartoony at best. I really can't draw humans (especially noses...noses are forever my nemesis.) I can kind of draw animals, if I have a good reference. I used to sketch all the time in high school/college. I should get back into practice. (See above comment about adulting being dumb.)

LOL I completely agree, I financially can't swing art with anything other than site currency, but I really like the Subeta art! There are still pets I hope to have one day because the site art is just so great. I do like overlays for certain pets, but I like to use a hover so the original art is still present on their profile in a way.

I agree! With the decline in general site population / activity many of the artists I followed are inactive. There are still great artists on the site, but it's sad to see how slow things can be at times and see so many folks who were around for a long time gone now.

Well I learned something new today, and I'm kinda confused lol. Based on the "member for" number I joined Subeta on Feb 11th, 2007 and I've always thought / remembered Kamots being my first pet and Chemukh being my second pet. But, Chemukh (who I am pretty dang confident I also created) was born on January 13th of 07 (created / adoption date are the same which backs up me creating her)? I'm wondering if there was just an error in her birthday and she was actually born on Feb 13th? Which would make more sense because I would have then joined on the 10th or 11th and created Kamots, then created her two days later. Which is more what I remember.

So I'm sticking with my story. In which case, my first pet was Kamots, with Chemukh being a very close second. To my memory, they were always a kumos and a telenine and I believe always intended to be angelic. I don't know that I had a true "plan" for them when I started, which may be why I didn't do anything much with them for so long.

I wish I could find the old stories because I'm remembering now how I originally approached my pets - they were all their own character, just name the color, species and they all lived with me in a cabin by the woods somewhere in Subeta. They all had a short "story" that led you from one pet to the next. I don't think it was anything elaborate, mostly just a descriptive blurb with some dialog that made it seem like you were moving from one room to the other meeting each pet or something like that. Thinking about all of this though just gave me an idea for Kamots and Chemukh that I really love, so I'm excited to make some additions to their profiles now. <3

I still have both of them, but did adopt out several other pets I had created / adopted. This is the oldest image the wayback machine has for my user profile. I created Makuyi, Fellarka, Stelios, Piyip, Motaki, and Rescue and adopted the others I believe. (Also can we take a minute to appreciate the old pet art!). I wish there was a log of "changes" we've made to pets we have. I know I changed some names over the years and wish I could remember for sure who became who, and who I adopted out. I remember that Rescue was originally TWLOHA and I changed her name only to end up adopting her out. Fellarka is still my girl, though she has changed looks. Stelios I adopted out, regretted it, stalked his name, and remade him when the account that had adopted him went inactive. Oh my gosh, look at the old graveyard ontra!

My first pet was the popoko, love at first site :D Then I had so many more "love at 1st sights" :D I remember being on Subeta for 2 weeks or so and found a Telenine in the pound, was sooo happy, back then they were LE and had to wait for special announcements to get one. He is till today my pride and joy, my dear Sushei, name he came with, but didn't change it because I was eating sushi when I got him XD Was meant to be :D

Most of my Subeta pets are alike/inspired by my RL pets...or friends :D My newest pet, Sherlock, made yesterday with the free subeta-versary slot, lived to be 23! Then he went to sleep and never woke up, but he was a vet's marvel, they actually made some tests to see what kept him alive so long and found out nothing, just that he died of old age...kinda DUH moment, but...yeah, sure :D

1. Who was your first pet(s) that you created / adopted on Subeta? What was their name? Their species and color? Oh my I don't remember my first ever pet since I was 13 at the time, but one of my very first pet was named Bankotsu and he was a Reborn Demi that my friend had gotten from the pound for me. He was my first big online OC, and I still have a TON of art of him that I got on Subeta back in the days. This was his design, he was based on a husky dog as I was obsessed with huskies back then. Sometimes I want to bring him back as a nostalgia OC, his design is super simple but still decent considering my other OCs at the times where sparkledogs.

(I don't have the name of the artists that made those two pieces of art. They were made pre-2010 so the artists are long gone from the site)

2. Did you have a "plan" for this / these pet(s)? Did it change over time? I was 14-17 back when I had Bankotsu. I wasn't really into pets per say, I was mostly into HA and getting art so that's what I did. I don't remember if he had a story? When I got into making profiles and stories around 2011-2012 he didn't fit in the picture. We has such limited slots, that I just got rib of him. I'm glad I kept all those art pieces I got of him tho. They're a nice reminder of where I started.

OH YES I LOVE THE WAYBACK MACHINE. I regularly look at my cringe old profiles lol. I'm sad to say that my subeta.ORG profile wasn't archived, the oldest of my profile is back when my US was poiupoiu2 (ah 13 year-old me loved that UN...) back in 2010 with one of the first ever profile graphic I made.

This is my oldest pet profile on Wayback. I used to have a very superficial Eighties tribute pet when I had my 80s phase back in 2010. Cringe, but it reminds me of how fun making a ton of graphics for profiles was.

Pollack's old profile is also there - I still like this profile! He actually won spotlight in 2014 or so with this profile. I changed it when I ID swapped him to have an 1969 birthdate. He needed a new profile so that he could someday win spotlight again. I love looking at this old profile tho, it has a very mid 2010s feel to it that is very nostalgic

I'm digging the retro / nostalgic of eighties, and absolutely vibing with Pollack's old profile! It is really nice. It's weird to see how "trends" have existed in subtle ways on Subeta, like the profile designs - while they are unique there's also like you said a "feel" to different setups.
