This has been happening a lot recently so I just wanted to send this as a friendly reminder:

Q. What do I do if the original artist of my CW is different from the recolor artist?
A. Please include both information in your submission! For the "artist" fill-in, you can put either the original artist or the recolor artist (be sure if you are doing a half-price artist copy, you put the person that should receive it there). In the notes, please include BOTH artists. For example, you can put as the artist if they did the recolor, but the notes should say "Original item by , recolor by so we have all the information needed.

I was looking through the FAQ and I didn't see anything about having offsite artists create CWs. My wife is an artist but she does not have an account on the site. Am I allowed to submit and sell designs she creates?

EDIT: I don't think she ever plans on starting an account here, it's not really her thing.

Agh I'm sorry I never pinged you back, I feel like a jerk! You are allowed to submit and sell designs she creates; just include all the information for her in the notes. However since it is an off-site artist, please note if there were any issues (ie tracing), you would be responsible as the person submitting it. I swear I thought this was in the FAQ; I'll add it soon

I'll add this soon too but -- please try not to use Discord links to link to tribute references! At least 50% of the time these links don't work.

I’ve actually figured out the reason discord links don’t always work!

If you use the MESSAGE link it won’t work for anyone but yourself, if you use the MEDIA link it’ll work.

Having the “preview” section in CW submissions was an amazing idea because we can preview it and see if they work!

I have a quick question! I submitted my CW and uploaded the wrong file for the CI. If I cancel my submission do I get my CSC back or will I have to wait to earn it back to submit again?

You get your CSC back as soon as you cancel!

I don't know if I should post my question here (please correct me if it's in the wrong place!), but:

  • I'm completely new to CWs - i.e. never commissioned nor tried to post a new CW.
  • I only and solely have CSC (don't want to pay with USD or real cash).
  • I want to submit a "tribute item" - i.e. based on a character from a copyrighted work with 4 changes.
  • I want author's permission to use the file for my own purposes (noticed a lot of threads where the artist refuses to do this).

Considering this scenario, I have the following questions:

  • Will it even be possible to find an artist that conforms to those needs? Most of them either refuse to accept CSC or ban you from using the art for any purpose besides the CW.
  • If yes, how many CSC should I prepare? For both posting costs and the commission itself.
  • If yes, how should I go about finding an artist willing to give me a commission?
  • What exactly counts as notable changes when it comes to tribute items? Like, is substantially (e.g. red to blue) changing the color of the eyes/clothing items/hair or the size of the tail OK as one of the 4 changes?
  • Is it allowed if I use the name of the copyrighted creature as the name of the CW? The name is not trademarked.

It is unlikely any artist will give up their rights for site currency rather than USD. And for those who sell rights, most of them will retain quite a lot of rights (as in, they'll give you permission to use it for the intended purpose and to display it non-commercially and that's about it - also Subeta takes over rights as well when you submit an item as a CW). You will never be able to buy full and exclusive rights to a piece of artwork for non-real currency, no artist will do that unless they're using some banned method to make art so they haven't actually invested any of their real tangible time and skill into it.

Plenty of artists will take on CSC commissions specifically for cws but only for that, you will not be given overall rights nor usually allowed to recolor etc yourself.

As far as the cost of something in CSC - it's going to depend on the artist and what the item is. As for submission costs, you can find those on the Creation page.

Changes need to be visible - color changes, size etc. They are gone over on the main page of this thread ">here and in the Denial thread section on Tribute items ">here.

And naming conventions typically depend - you'd likely need to submit to get clarity or post what it is.

OK, if I really need the rights, how many USD should I expect to pay for the commission?

I prefer CSC payment but the rights are a lot more important than the payment method -- even if they are limited to just displaying non-commercially, I don't intend to use it commercially.

And how should I go about actually looking for an artist?

If the primary purpose is for a ce then you'd go to the CW commission sub forum. As far as cost, that's really up to the artist. Some would not be willing at all, some will, but the cost is generally not cheap at all for it. I'd suggest putting in your topic or request that you're seeking to buy the rights for the piece as well, that way when quoting prices they know what all you want.

Q. I really like an older CW. Can I make one similar to it?
Please see the above. If you have to ask yourself, "Is this item too similar to one that already exists?", the answer is probably yes.

Shouldn't the answer be "probably no" instead? This implies that you are allowed to make similar artwork to existing CWs.

Please re-read the question. It says if you are asking 'Is this too close to an item that already exists', the answer to THAT is probably yes.

I feel like I shouldn't have to say this, but I guess I need to.

On top of AI art not being allowed to be a part of a custom wearable submission, it may also not be used as a reference for custom wearables. AI art is theft - full stop. And just like you shouldn't be using someone else's original art as a reference for a custom wearable, you ALSO should not be using something that was literally stolen from thousands of artists as a reference for a custom wearable. There are PLENTY of real, amazing things to use as art references -- or use your own imagination. But AI art is absolutely NO GO in any form in custom wearables.

Please note: if you DO use AI as a reference for something and try to hide the fact that it is an AI reference in your submission notes, your item will be denied and you will receive a CW ban. I'm not playing around with this.

I'm absolutely willing to give the benefit of the doubt - I know how much Google and other search engines loves to just throw AI art in with other things. But this is why it's important to note that just because something is on Google doesn't mean it's an acceptable reference! You should be researching where your references are coming from and be able to supply information about them when asked.

There are a lot of CWs lately where we're just being given an image as a reference with absolutely no information about where it comes from. Sometimes these are even peoples' original drawings and paintings! This isn't okay.

• Random photographs that you did not take yourself and that are not in the public domain should not be used as CW references -- as in you shouldn't recreate a single photograph as a CW (NOTE - this isn't saying you can't use say, a random photo of a lion to help with lion anatomy. That's fine. If you draw the lion in the exact same position with the exact same scenery around it -- that's not okay as a CW) • Someone else's original art should not be used as CW references. • Someone else's OC should definitely not be used as a CW reference (unless you have permission and can provide that exact permission in writing)

Basically: Just because something appears when you search for it doesn't mean it's public domain and is therefor okay to be a CW reference. And a reference shouldn't be just a random image you toss in the description without telling us where it's from.

Also, sometimes I feel like people just pull up something to submit with their CW because they're afraid we'll deny it for not having a reference. This isn't true. You can say you didn't use a reference if you truly didn't -- we just like to have SOMETHING noted in the submissions box, especially for a first submission!

(HOWEVER - don't just say you didn't use a reference when you DID to avoid the rest of the above. This will result in a warning).

Sorry if I sound really frustrated/exasperated, but well... I sort of am.

oh I get it believe me,but like I said there are people dense enough to believe even 'real' artwork could be fake

Im in an fb group and theres an artist that creates cgi art and a good chunk of the group thinks its all fake even though they have posted multiple videos of them doing the actual from concept to finish, just baffles me

was just curious though tbh

To confirm, I'm not exasperated at you! It was an honest question. I'm just exasperated in general. I just don't personally understand how any artist is comfortable using AI art for basically anything.
