I'm the one who suggested the weapons auto-selecting, so I don't have to say how happy I am about that part.
However, I do actually agree about the scrolls and potions. I never use potions, but I knew my scrolls by color and position, not necessarily by name. The drop-down is a step backwards imo. Perhaps the scrolls and potions could be in their own scroll boxes? And perhaps we could highlight the weapons we have selected, rather than graying out all the ones we don't?
Also kinda wish the weapons were on the left but that's cause I'm lazy and don't wanna move my mouse to the far side of the screen lol

Neopets ("ugh, Neopets", yes I know) found a nice middle ground where when you click one of the weapon/spell slots, you get a popup with the images. I would much prefer something like that to plain text.

Yeah I can see where the layout was going and like the overall idea but a few things could have been done differently or left unchanged.
I do like how easy it is to select weapons and have things automatically selected so in most instances, all I have to do is hit the next turn button.
I assume if you get frozen it automatically doesn't select anything on account of you can't do anything?

shrieks because i cant wait to battle tomorrow to check this out
literally my reaction when i read some of these was just to lean back in my chair and throw my arms up like dang i am pumped why didnt you implement three hours ago when i was battling
bird and bear and hare and fish give my love her fondest wish
The weapons are nice but the drop down box for scroll is much more time consuming :(
I like the idea of having an image popup window as well. It would take an extra mouse click, but I would at least be able to see what I wanted faster by looking at an image than looking for text.
It shows blanks for all the selections (weapons, potions and scrolls) and grays out your weapon set so you can't choose anything
The problem with giving potions and scrolls their own boxes is... if someone has a ton of either equipped. Can you image 40 boxes for scrolls and then 50 for potions? It'd be a disaster.
After a quick discussion with , two changes will be made in the coming days. First, the scroll color will be added to the text in the dropdown list for scrolls, to help those with visual cues. And second, the greying out of weapons will be dealt with, so users can see the weapons better :)
Potions are a different matter, as color isn't necessarily helpful when it comes to those. That's a trickier fix. We're working on something for those.
Omg that's so convenient!

thank you, purge and bug, for taking our issues into consideration and finding a compromise!
- Did you see my screenshot above? Would it be possible to do something like that, and implement stacking for when people have multiples of a given scroll or potion?

hmm i get changing the scrolls to a drop down since they are only identifiable by name, not image, but it's kind of annoying having to open the drop down list and click a new scroll to change it, when before they were all just there and i could immediately click the one i wanted.
I see the image, but I don't quite understand. I haven't been on Neopets in ages :P Also, that's not a question I can answer! ( is very tired, will look at things later)
I like the idea had to open a separate window for potions and scrolls. If not, maybe a tiny image of the potion or shard next to the text to help find things faster for people who have a lot of scrolls and potions equipped?
Wait what no I mean like one box for scrolls and one for potions. Just like the weapons are set up, but with scrolling so if you have 80 equipped then they still only take up one row.
Actually finished BQs now after setting up my sets for my default battling methods - for anything that requires zero thought or strategy, this is great. D: I can mindlessly click through all my freezer scrolls and then boom battle over. So BQing will be much easier/faster, at least for me if I'm using my main pet.
I think I would find this more annoying when trying to strategize or puzzle out a new challenger (or an old challenger with a new pet). It's more difficult to tell how many of a scroll you have left (e.g. sometimes if I'm using Smashers as ice blockers, I want to space them out rather than blow through them all at once). So in any battle that's kind of close, it would be a pain.
Also, I need to look at how the potions/pylonics work in the drop-down (I forgot while BQing). Having them stacked was amazing before - I'm hoping somehow that is still a thing with a drop-down.
One thing I might suggest (because apparently I am super-lazy and want to avoid scrolling..) is having the total damage/healing at the top of the battle text box instead of the end. Generally that's the bits I care about, so it would be handy to just be able to see that without scrolling. Granted, it's not that much scrolling and definitely isn't end of the world if it doesn't happen.

^^^^^^^ This - I use potions when I have a limited time to fight someone pretty hard for a 5th round prize. I know them by sight/color, too. :)
I would prefer to select the image than the name from a drop down.
I DID like that my 10 dark death potions and 10 dark fire potions etc. were not taking up 20+ spots on the page.
Maybe like: (potion IMAGE) x10
I liked the way the old horizontal arrangement gave the whole page width to the pet and opponent; it showed off the art, and worked especially well when the challenger images were much bigger than the pets. This crams them into an extremely small area in small screens and non-full-screen windows (I never have my browser open to more than half the width of my monitor), which makes the opponents dinky and sad—especially as there's no min-width.
Perhaps putting the weapons in one row again, but above the arena? This would also allow them to be shown at their original size without wasting any additional vertical space, making them both easier to see (and nicer to look at) and quicker to click on. And there would still be no scrolling required.
This would also allow a natural padding and/or vertical margin around the weapon images—right now, there is no padding and no margin at all between the first and second rows. This means that not only do the selection drop-shadows press right up against the edges of the image (which doesn't look at all well when the art uses the entire space; my T1's Artifact Sword is particularly ill-served), they also overlap the other weapon images in the well, making it crowded and uncomfortable.
In that layout, the selected-weapon images could probably be eliminated—they'd use vertical space and as it is I don't think they contribute any useful information, since we can already see which weapons are selected in the well right above them. (Weapon names could go in tooltips, or even back under the images, and 'which weapon was selected last' would probably be easier and more understandably shown if it, say, had a brighter selection aura.)
Even if they're kept, the combination of box-sizing: border-box, a one-pixel border, and max-width: 100% on the images resizes them to one pixel smaller than the original image size, which is very blurry and should be fixed.
CHEERS BLESS FIXES. Are there going to be any revisions to this before it settles? I will probably end up writing a lot of custom CSS to get it to a place that satisfies me personally, but I'll wait if it means not going after a moving target.
I understand that everyone is different and likes/dislikes different things and I generally try to be accommodating about it.
I do think that this change might be easier for experienced battlers and higher tier pets. Partly because you already have so much knowledge base and partly because I do acknowledge that it is faster to battler little challengers where it really doesn't matter much what weapon/scroll you use (that's really what's making the BQs faster, in my opinion).
And it could be okay for really new battlers who just aren't used to anything else (although the scrolling required to read the battle text and the drop down menus will make it harder for them to learn) but they don't know anything different, so it might not bother them as much.
I'm, unfortunately, in the worst spot, I think. I have a new baby battler and a T9 main battler and I was just starting to get serious and really put in time, effort and sP. So I depend on that battle text (which means scrolling all the time with any difficult challenger) and I really need those graphics. (And I know it doesn't help that my eyesight is not what it once was and I already have difficulties seeing things Even the grayed out letters while I'm typing here are a problem for me. If I want to be able to read what I'm typing I have to zoom the page bigger than if the letters were black. And I have not found any way to change the contrast via CSS.) So that "cramped" thing is also a big issue for me.
I'm sure there will be exceptions, but generally replacing graphics with text is a step backwards.
What happened to my battle pets battle set it had equipped before all these changes were made? I just tried a battle quest and it just picked random battle items for me to use :(. Not liking that at all....I have a lot of time, effort and expense in training, upgrading battle weapons, scrolls ect and now I don't have a clue where anything is now.... Very confusing and takes all the fun out of battling for me :(. How do we change back to our original battle set?
