Really not a glitch, but instead of always selecting the default set, is there any way for the weapon selection page to remember the last saved set you chose?
I don't know what's involved with that obviously, but it would be useful when you're battling with any pet that isn't your main battle pet/that can't use your default set.
Just hoping it could be considered for the future!
Thanks for all your work~
Two small changes have been pushed. First, the scrolling for the battle commentary has been removed (making it easier to see the damage/healing amounts etc). And the weapons that are not selected are no longer greyed out!
As always, more to come.
I just ran into a weird bug. If I refresh the page at the end of the battle after the "game over" button appears, the button half breaks. Its appearance changes (to the default browser styling instead of using Subeta's CSS) and clicking it brings up the loading animation and the page appears to stall there indefinitely. It still processes the end of the battle (I can see the successful post request in firebug), but the page doesn't go anywhere. Upon refreshing again, it tells me that the battle doesn't exist, so I never get to see the result page.

I'm pretty sure this used to happen with the old format as well, but it's worth looking into with the new system anyway because it is annoying when it happens.
I feel like a decent compromise for the people who like the autoselect and don't like the autoselect would be to have two "default" weapons in your battle set and one default scroll. These are the items that get autoselected. You would have the option to not set any defaults and that wouldn't autoselect any items. If that is feasible, that might make more people happy
- I think it happened all the time with the old format, but now it's just at the very end of the battle. So at least it's an improvement? :P Hopefully it can be completely fixed.
- It sounds like you'd have to go to the armory page to manage something like that, which takes you out of the flow of battle and is kind of annoying. I think it would be best to have it as something you can set and change during battle. That gives the added benefit of flexibility, so you could auto-select two weapons for a few rounds and then switch to auto-selecting a shield and healer for a while.

Yeah I thought it'd be something you could set ahead of time. Idk, for how I battle, I'd almost never change mid fight. I'd be kinda annoyed having to set it and reset it every battle even if it's more flexible.
I have a small question:
Is it possible to stop the page from breaking if you manage to make a turn without any weapons selected? I think I had slight lag and was fast enough to hit the button before the weapons auto selected. This used to only happen in the old battle layout if you made a turn with three, or more, weapons selected.
Luckily when I backspaced I was able to continue the battle.

Thank you for making the battle text visible again!
Oooh, I didn't even think of that. It's indeed annoying if you don't have an infinite use scroll. I assume most people have one, so I'd prefer to have a scroll automatically selected. But there should be an easy way to turn the auto select off; maybe have some battle options somewhere in the battle coliseum (or with the scroll sets) where you can set whether you want to auto select the first scroll or not. It could also have an option for the auto weapon selection. Though I'm not sure how difficult it would be to implement such options.
I haven't even read through all of your post yet. Just want to comment on your suggested layout right away, what I felt most disturbing at first glance. Again for the visually oriented: I do not like the curses etc to be shifted away from the fighter they apply to.
Current UI objectives:
3. Other assumptions about sets and battling:</p>
<ul>
<li>&;Don&;t we all have a scroll that we will use for the majority of the battle?&;. Fact is: not everyone has an Aftershocks or OC in their set. Some battlers don&;t even have Divine Denizhen or Terra Focujin. Some have limited AP or fund, opt for OPB defensive or freezing scrolls, and prefer to reserve them until much later for emergency blocks or freezes. Pre-selection is great if you have an infinite scroll, but inconveniences other battlers who can&;t yet afford it. Pre-selection requires more work for these battlers because, instead of remembering to select a scroll only a few times during a battle, now they have to remember to deselect a scroll every turn of a battle, until there is reason to use one. Imagine the inconvenience of them going through a 20-turn battle with only one or two OPB scrolls. Smaller pets with fewer APs and less fancy scrolls fight longer and harder battles; I don&;t support making it harder for them for our convenience.
My suggestion is, though I don&;t know how feasible it is, to have our choice memorised for later turns. Scrolls aren&;t pre-selected, but when we choose one, that scroll will be used for every subsequent turn until we switch to another scroll or run out of copies (for OPB scrolls).</li>
<li>I also support the option to choose between pre-selection and manual selection. I&;m not in favour of the first for many reasons I have listed, but don&;t want to take away what other battlers find convenient.

This definitely. In the armory respectively library an option to permanently decide about preselect yes/no, if we cannot find a better solution altogether. I have tons of superb infinite use scrolls. Usually a healing and a freezing one, which I keep changing according to my liking like at least every second move. For speedy hack and slay fights, I have my lucky scrolls first, so if in a tad longer battle I need one of my (2) infinite use ones, I have to search for them in the drop down again. It is utterly annoying even if you are in the lucky position to own infinites.
I can see that the scroll field for battle comments has been removed. But since the Arena field has to share the window width with the next turn stuff, this is still terrible, because endlessly long and unclear, plus then we have to return back up to go on fighting. I can't even see my weapon and scroll info at once, but even need to scroll to see, which I used in the previous move. Not even mentioning the tons of curses and blessings. Comparing the challenger's action to mine is almost impossible.
The old UI was a ton clearer, faster and user friendly. (esp. with using keys "end" and "enter", if you did not want to read/check, use scrolls or in order to skip the potions)
How about returning to a one box layout and making the battle text, potions and scrolls a dropdown, which then can be opened permanently by custom CSS for people, who want that. Just like it was done for the "choose your pet", where we had the discussion, that some want to see all, others only one or a few available battle pets. I could also live with a direct follow up of weapons scrolls and potions and the text thereafter (one below the next but full width, just like we used to have it), with a "make your move" button both at the top and the bottom. That whole blank bottom part on the right is just a waste of much needed space on the left!
Thank you also for making our pet full size again. Images should generally definitely not shrink with window size. After all this site lives on our pets and images.
The ultimate solution would of course be to give us an option to choose between the "fast" and the "normal" (=old) interface. As I mentioned before, the mindless preselect option is indeed incredibly fast for one click fights. But then, do we really want that? Quite honestly, it deters from trying out other strategies and testing for a change. Why need to bother even with that little? Since we no longer need to do anything anyway, you could just as well give loot and XP for free in general to all pets, who can one hit something instead of giving us the BQ option to skip the first 15 levels (which means losing a lot of fast easy XP if accepted).
I have real problems going through proper fights, because I need to double check everything, the deselect/choose new weapons is a nightmare most of the times. All fluency is gone :-(
I also still have the problem that more often than not, if I choose a scroll on the drop down I automatically hit "make your move" because it overlaps.
I think I know what you mean. Let me explain a little bit more. The orange circles in the mock-up layout, under the health bar, are curses/ blessing images. The curses/ blessings/ weapon icons on the side Battle Text bar are actually the name of the curse/ blessing/ weapon, the type and number of icons they deal - in other words the textual info that we often read from the battle text. I wouldn't want to take the curses/ blessing images away either. However, if you want the textual information presented in columns right under each combatant rather than being pushed to one side, I can see that being a major drawback of my suggested layout.
Yes I think that most battlers who have high tiered pets or who frequent the BC or Battle forum would have an infinite healing scroll. However I'm often surprised to see that not many battlers who ask for set advice in the subforum have one of those in their set. For beginner or casual battlers who are not sure battling would be enticing enough for them to commit wholeheartedly to, and need more time to make decision, I can see the reason behind their reluctance to invest 64-72 mil in a solid infinite healing scroll. It is very clear that the current layout is tailored for us, those with more experience and better means, and (perhaps, for some) tired of the monotony of battling. I appreciate the intent, but at the same time I can also see how this change can make battling more difficult and tedious for beginning, or growing battlers.
Ah! gotcha ;-) Thanks for explaining!
Yeah, I'd definitely like everything to stay the way it was :-(
Full window width usage for everything. Icons etc. under the challenger they refer to.
I just did a 9th battle against Prodigy and it was an endless ordeal under the current circumstances.
I'd really rather quit battling - and therefore basically Subeta altogether, than go through this.
Granted, had we not known anything more practical, we would have lived with it all the time, but unfortunately we know a much more efficient way. I am obviously too narrow minded to understand, how anybody can find the new style more battle friendly - for real fighting, not XP farming through easy BQ levels. Having everything pre-selected for you and attention drawn away from what is happening in battle would be called "more challenging"?
I do hope, everything will come to a good feasable solution for evrybody.
I also hope we can come to a middleground. If I have to, I can make do without the possibility of using the Enter key, for example, in exchange for more fluency in other more important areas (e.g. the ability to opt for no pre-selection). If in the finalised version, the layout is still kept similar to this, then I hope the code will be written in a way that allows us to use CustomCSS to move the right column (which currently contains weapons, potions and scrolls) to under the battle text, to mimic the old one-column layout.
Visual presentations of potions and scrolls, however, cannot be intervened by using CustomCSS, so hopefully they will be brought back in the final, official layout (uhm, I lied, I don't actually hope, but will fight for them to be brought back haha XD).
I fully agree. And the other issues are far more important than the enter key ;-) The comments the admins left here made me very convinced, that they will bring back images for scrolls and potions again. I am keeping ALL my fingers crossed, that they will return to a more streamlined UI or the implemented ability to achieve that via CSS that will be shared with handicapped users like myself :-)
P.S.: The small HP bar also is a huge pain ita in regard of strong challengers. I KNOW, there are numbers underneath, but if I SEE only so seemingly little health left now, and its death in reality is still a few moves away...
Fought Dean for Level 25 BQs today. I've only seen him once or twice before and didn't realize scrolls were disabled. So I spent several minutes panicking because I sort of noticed something was different and thought my scroll selection was just broken - and with me already in battle! Tried resizing my browser several times, and a few other things. Fortunately, I had saved a text file with Dean's attributes and was able to open that to see that scroll use is disabled. Then I just laughed at myself. I can see this being a problem for newer battlers though. Maybe some sort of text - like in the selection box, instead of "None", could it show "Scrolls Disabled"? I'm hoping that wouldn't be too difficult of a change to implement since it's already a different presentation than the standard.
Once something is done to put back scroll graphics, perhaps some sort of disabled notice could still be kept for the same purpose.
By the way, with the help of the new changes, I was able to finally beat Dean after several battles. Having that battle text back in a more accessible format absolutely contributed to that.
I should also mention that I am battling on a laptop, so I do have a relatively large screen. I would not be expecting to see so much or to mostly avoid scrolling using a smaller tablet and certainly not on a phone. :-) I know users want to battle using various devices and understand if some compromises are needed to make that possible.
- if you do get locked out of a battle, you can get back to it by going to the Statistics page - Battle Statistics where you will find a link saying Pet Name is in a battle! Clicking that link will return you to your lost battle.
any chance of having your active pet preselected too? or a way to have a "default battler", same as having default scrolls and weapons, separate from "active pet" if thats too tricky to link together?

I just tried using full screen on my window, respectively see, how much I have to expand the window to get everything full size and the text without not intended breaks. That's almost full screen width, which is by far to wide to properly take in and understand the whole page without needing to shift eyes from one side to the other. I usually work with approximately 5 (that holds the battling tab) : 4. Because the old battle UI would need a slightly larger window to use comfortably. Of course then the commentary and weapon icons etc. are shorter, but that's too much strain on the eyes than having everything within focus.
Oh, I already know that. :D And there's a good reason I do. lol Knowing this happened before when selecting three weapons, I did that quite a bit. lol I can battle, just everyone else better watch out as I'd probably win by chance as I flail about with my eyes closed.
I was just happy backspacing worked that time because I hate having to navigate over there to resume the battle.

I found another problem!
When battling Lich Lord, one of the valid strategies for smaller pets is to steal the Soul Clasp Sword and use it against him. When using the Truth Serum, two items get stolen. I can see in the battle text which two are stolen, but in my weapon set both of them have the same image (namely none, like all opponent exclusive weapons). Currently it's impossible to distinguish the Soul Clasp Sword (which lets you win the battle) from any other stolen weapon (which instakills you).
So uhh, either all opponent weapons need an image, or we need some way to get to see the name of the weapon on mouse-over or something. Though that would be a bit annoying for our own weapons maybe.
Edit: When selecting the weapon it does state the name, so I guess this is not really a problem then.
