Hi everyone. Regarding the suggestion: Move total damage/healing to the top of the commentary text.

I've been trying to figure this out for a while now. The code that generates the commentary is extremely convoluted so this is way trickier than you (or I) would expect.

However, no one told me that gelatin wars usually expect users to keep track of their damage dealt by themselves. So now that I know that, I completely understand how necessary this is to get working in some form, and it's increased a lot in priority.

I'm now thinking about how I can implement a quick, temporary solution, maybe involving calculating it backwards in the JavaScript or something, by parsing the commentary. (As ridiculous as that sounds, it would be easier to do that than actually deal with the backend code that generates it.) I have a couple other ideas. And it will probably end with the total damage/healing being repeated at the top and bottom but I don't think anyone minds that.

I'm hoping to get something figured out for this by tomorrow, so please be patient and know that it's being worked on.

While I have your attention, I want to ask something. Right now, the left-hand side of the screen remains where you scroll it to. For example, if you scroll it to the bottom and make a turn, it stays scrolled to the bottom. Should I change this to scroll back at the top automatically after you make a turn?

[edit] With further thought, I'm going to make it scroll back up to the top after each turn, but I will make this change after I move the total damage/healing to the top as well somehow so that those relying on this at the moment can still do so.

My thought would be that leaving it scrolled to where you scrolled it would be useful, but if damage is being reported top AND bottom, it's probably fine to have it automatically return to the top.

It is usually not at all true that users need to track their total damage. In previous big-ass battles of all kinds, the total number of hits that you needed to score the top prize was not only secret and arbitrary to the mood of the BAs, you were in competition for them with everyone else. This total calculator then, it is a new need and not a traditional one.

The other thingy you need to track specifically for Gelatine War specifically is how many kills you have made.. This you do not need to code at all, it's already in Statistics.

I honestly don't think we've ever needed to before. (I'm shooting for going over the 5 mil, rather than being possibly under, as it stands.)

I like it 'stick-y-ing' scrolling a LOT. It's GREAT. Noticed it and wasn't sure when it was added. (& I can more easily see everything that I want, damange & HP, and I have a crappy monitor that's less than 800px tall. :P)

Good luck figuring something out, ! :D You're working with what's probably horrible old code, and your hard work and dedication is appreciated.

That's weird because told me that's how it's always been. I wasn't here for any previous gelatin wars myself.

- thank you for working on this (along with everything else).

Wondering whether there is any way that (with comparable and reasonable effort) you could provide the total damage done instead so users don't need to try and keep track and battle at the same time. Yes, I know that said doing this would break the site - I'm sure that's true. But wondered on the Battle Chat thread earlier today whether it would be possible to do with some sort of delay or cache - even once a day for yesterday would be a big help. I know I saw you discuss caching on the Your Pets page and also that rank is available, but only when you click it - not shown as a default. Maybe something similar (but not available all the time - limited use?). I have seen your considerable skills and noticed that you often, when you get a chance to spend a bit of time thinking about a problem, come up with a solution to what was originally deemed impossible, so I am just asking if you can spend a little time considering this. I know that total damage has to be in the system somewhere (to award prizes) so I'm hoping you can somehow coax it out into wider view. If that were done, moving the damage text would be much less urgent.

Please note that I am completely aware that not all impossible problems can be resolved even by excellent programmers, so I am not expecting miracles and will understand completely if this continues to be impossible for now.

For what it's worth - I believe many top battlers in hot pursuit of a core did indeed keep track of their total damage before on their own. Many of them set a target goal based on their previous experience of what had won cores in the past. But there was no set goal like this year, and what damage actually wound up winning was unknown until later. Last year, for example the core was awarded to the Top 25 battlers overall (based on damage) and the top damage dealer of each tier (no doubles). So I think both what and told you is correct. Just sort of different ways of looking at the same story. (I hope that is helpful.)

It's a little bit of a pain to scroll but not a huge deal. I would be much more upset if with this latest push something else broke and either we can't battle or our damage stops getting recorded on your end. Please take your time and release when you are ready, no need to rush :D

Maybe I'm just misremembering, but I would have said that we all fought the boss and reduced its HP. Whoever got lucky enough to get the last hit in 'won.' They'd get the reward, but all the damage counted towards the goal, because it only had so much HP. Then, we'd get another boss later, repeat.

But, I'm clearly not purge. haha. Sorry if I'm giving you wrong information, I don't mean to.

I'm not tracking my battle losses and doing a guestimate on what damage I'm dealing out. I'm going for 150-200 losses in a week so I'll be over 5mil I hope.

I know it's said that a total damage counter would kill the site, but honestly that would be more beneficial than anything else.

Is it possible to have it be a manual thing and not an automatic thing? Like a calculate damage done button or something? Or maybe it automatically updates after every 25/50 battles? I don't think we need it done every turn, because obv this model would drag the site to hell.

Could it be done a separate page? Would that help? Like how we have to go to the opponent to even see how many time we've battled them, there could be a "see total damage" button that would redirect or something. I'm just spitting ideas here.

for me personally, I generally don't even read the text. I just scroll to the bottom, look at the damage, and hit the button. I like that it stays where I need to see the information. But if it is available up top, then I most likely will never scroll unless necessary.

Really, I just need all the info to fit on my screen period. So far the revamp does just that.

also ps

A counter that would count the prior days damages at midnight would work for us.

I will learn how it works and report back whether some form of damage counter is possible. Please be aware though, the answer may very well be that it's not possible, so I don't mean to get your hopes up if that's the case.

It's true that if we want to keep track of how much damage we've done, then we have to do so ourselves. But I know quite a few battlers will just estimate based on the average amount of damage they do per battle and then aim for a number of battles to get however much damage they want to try for.

It would make it a bit more convenient though to show the damage totals without having to scroll, just for people who want to check their consistency in their estimates to see how much damage they seem to be doing each time.

I like when it stays at the bottom of the screen because I am recording the damage I deal each turn so I can make my 5 mil damage for a core. Can you wait until tomorrow to do this?

I live in MN, and whatever you've heard... It's much worse.

Even if the counter updated once a day or once every other day, something to tell me yes I'm above 5m would be great because I'm never confident

I second begging for a once a day counter. I'm currently getting 100 battles on a pet I know should only need ~50. Peace of mind would be divine.

- awesome, thank you!

And, yes, I understand that looking to see whether something can be done, doesn't mean the answer will be yes. Just the fact that you are willing to look is great and I will be supportive of whatever answer you come up with.

Also for what it's worth (in case total damage is beyond technical magic for now) I would prefer the page to scroll back up if the damage text is at the top because I am finding that constant up and down scrolling movements and my wrist are not completely happy with each other. :-) (Not unusual for me.) And I am totally not confident about my damage done.

LOL - thank you for posting this. So good to know I'm not the only battler petrified that I'll work forever and then miss out on a core for 100 hp of damage or some such. Peace of mind - priceless!
