Ha! Underlining my previous statement regarding the importance of scrolls. The new challenger Atzoatlchu has a curse, which disables weapons. We need to fight with scrolls instead of weapons. Please put more emphasis on scrolls again and give them their own full-fledged horizontal box!

I would looove curse/blessing hovers. Or for someone to write a complete list ;-) This has been bugging me forever.

I think the issue is that weapons all look different. Scrolls only vary based on element. This makes weapon selection enharently more visually based. I don't mind pictures of scrolls once they stack. Currently it's just clutter to me and I still have to read the scroll name to choose, depending on what is equipped ie more then one of the same kind of element scroll.

That's understandable. But still I want all my scrolls visible plus easy to choose and not hidden, much less in a scrollable box than a dropdown. Granted, the images are all the same for same elements, still I made a habit of ordering respectively distinguishing them by colour. So I knew by hard, which was which - the yellow to the right being my Tasselled, the ones to the left the Psychos, inbetween a green Gela and purple Luckies, while the purple Shrieks would be to the far left, thus I didn't even need to read.

Does anyone know if there is a way to block the image that pops up at the top of the page after you click make your turn?

I think this is the code that generates it:

Oh whoops I'm sorry about that. I actually removed it completely in this update, but then it was accidentally added back when I was doing my bugfixes and I didn't notice ><

(No one minds if I go back and remove it completely right?)

I doubt anyone does, it might not be too bad if it were moved to the bottom of the page where it isn't going to jerk the page around. Or inside the table under the submit turn button. Seeing something move while the page is updating isn't the worst idea, just the way it jerks everything.

It's kinda hard to move it haha. But yeah thanks for catching that for me. It was originally supposed to be like a subtle part of the update so I hope no one minds if I go ahead and make that change again. My original thought was that we don't need a loading bar between turns, it's sort of like having a loading bar between pages on a website (you know what I mean?)

It nvm, Leave it gone, the page loads beautifully without it. I think it was actually a decent source of lag, having just run a few battles without it.

Hello. Thank you for all your hard work. Was just wondering... I do 99% of my BQs and battles on my iPhone Plus. Is there anyway I can use the preselection on there too? For now it says click here if you want it turned on, but it doesn't do anything and doesn't activate when I went into battle so I'm in battle tapping away (way better than clicking) at my weapons and scrolls. I went to my computer and turned preselection ON. And did one battle and it was AWESOME. Maybe it's a cache thing and I should be patient and try again and it will magical turned on (on my phone). I also liked the previous version's lefthand commentary where I didn't have to scroll down to see the damages part. But, I know that you are diligently working on making battle UIs come to life and so I will be patient and battle on PC if that what it takes to make BQs go by in a flash. Thank you in advance for any information regarding my convoluted question. XD

What browser are you using on your phone? The preselection is based on your browser's localStorage, which should be supported by iOS Safari according to this: =localStorage">https://caniuse.com/=localStorage

I've confirmed that it is browser-specific, not mobile-specific (that is, it does work on some mobile browsers) and I don't yet have a workaround in place if your browser doesn't support it.

As for the left-hand side, it's really designed for PC right now since the website isn't mobile responsive yet. I don't think I can do anything about that until we switch to the new site layout... which may be a while, since I've sort of settled into a different role here :x

[edit] Geez, don't mash the buttons quick then XD

Anyway you want to take on the most infuriating battle glitch on the site:

  1. During Battle Quests, After clicking the "Challenge Buttwing bomber" button, when it takes you to this page:

https://subeta.net/games/battle/challenge.php?act=battle&id=72

It does not auto select your default pet like it does when you go from the challenge opponent pet and click the "Choose Weapons" button seen on this page:

https://subeta.net/games/battle/challenge.php?act=battle&id=72&pet=837808

It looks like all that would need to be fixed would be to add the &pet=####### modifier to the link.

Yes. Design is not about math. User interfaces are all about users not numbers. Thank you both for understanding and caring about this and for stating it so clearly. I am so excited to have you working on so many things around Subeta because you put so much effort into making sure that all the concerns of each and every user are taken into account. Your extra work to make that happen is very much appreciated.

As part of the update for today, I wanted to move the total damage/total healing section to the top. That was all I wanted to do. What I discovered was that the code that generates the battle commentary is very convoluted, difficult to understand, difficult to change - so much so that even the simple task of moving the total damage/healing to the top rather than bottom was not feasible to accomplish by the timeline we wanted for this update.</p>
<p>I definitely want to address this, but I would need to sit down for a while probably and figure out how the battle backend code works. But right now I am concentrating mostly on changes to the front-end, and the battle back-end is enough of a behemoth that I don&;t really want to touch it just yet...
You have my total support and sympathy with this. I really feel for you when I see that.

If you need my help with any other customCSS, like to make the font-size bigger, make it change background-color on hover or anything just let me know. I gave these their own classes (.spell-choice) so it should be very easy to give them custom styles to suit your needs, while other people can still have their needs taken into account 😄
Wow - thank you! That should be extremely helpful for so many of us!

2. The weapon and scroll boxes scroll now and only 2-3 items are visible at once. This one I agree is a problem right now, but what I&;m planning to do to mitigate it first of all is to make scrolls stack. That way, you don&;t need to scroll past a million of the same scroll to get to the next different scroll. This is also something that&;s harder to code than it sounds but I&;m working on it. Ideally I could also find a way to show more items at once in the selection boxes (4-6 items would be great) but the issue here is screen space and I don&;t have a good solution yet.
This is exactly what the old full-width page provided - except that it needed to change to make the potions and scrolls sections collapsible so that those with billions of either could get past them without tons of scrolling. (And, of course, the code generating the page needed to change to make battling faster.)

Because pets can equip an unlimited set of potions and scrolls, there is no amount of screen space that can avoid scrolling if they have large numbers equipped. Allowing you to collapse (or not to display at all) the potion or scroll portion of the screen when you don't need/want to see it is the best that can be done.

As for scrolling in general, if you are using a device with a small screen then scrolling is sort of inevitable. There is only so much that can be shown at one time on a smartphone. If you are able and willing to use a laptop/desktop with a large screen, then I think it should be possible not to need to scroll (or to need scrolling very infrequently). I also think it should be possible ultimately to arrange that large screen presentation to put the "more important" stuff on top to help keep scrolling less necessary. Battlers do need to be aware that the underlying code needs to handle all size screens and all devices, so some compromise might be necessary and we need to be open to that.

That said, when thinking about this I realized why scrolling is a problem for me. When I fight a really hard challenger then I am juggling so many things already that my brain simply has an overflow when you add anything more. I hadn't really realized it before, but I was at the peak of my mental capacity (so battling is actually good for exercising your brain - yay!). When I could see whatever I needed with a simple eye flick it was so quick and intuitive that it worked for me. When I need to do anything else - scroll, use a dropdown menu, anything that moves stuff off the visible screen - in the middle of that decision process, I lose my place and then am frustrated. So I don't want to scroll during weapon, potion, scroll selection. However, scrolling at other times is just fine and part of using a computer/tablet/smartphone. I have no problem scrolling to find a make turn button because by the time I'm looking for that, my decision making process is done. I do understand that others want that button up top for fast and easy access. I'm just trying to explain where (for me) scrolling interferes with strategic battling, not talking speed here.

Bottom line is I think it's possible there might be less negative reaction to scrolling if you are able to limit it to places where it is less disruptive. And those who dislike scrolling at all - ever, need to be willing to compromise in order to allow all of us to choose the devices we use for battling.

By the way, and sorry if this is a really dumb question - who is Jason? Should I know?

Quote by kbbob
Imo scrolls are reactive, you can&;t really preplan efficiently. You use a healing scroll if you need to heal, if you think you might die or take a big hit the next turn, you use a defensive scroll. If you have a good amount of health and the opponent has no blessing active, you try for a freeze - things that you assess during the battle based on the current situation and what you think is the best for the next turn. Not something you can effectively plan ahead for
Yes - and that is why I really need to see all my scrolls spread out (in which case stacking would be awesome) across the page so that I can see what resources I currently have and choose how and when to spend them. Having the images back is helpful for me too (guess I must be very visually oriented - the strange way we learn things about ourselves :-) ) but it doesn't address my underlying problem because I still can't see everything all at one time. For now, since I have low AP and only three scrolls, I don't have a big issue with this. But I do have a problem with potions/shards. And I can see that scrolls will also become a problem as my list grows.

Quote by THESOVEREIGN
I don&;t get why people complained enough to make preselection go away.
Just FYI, since you mention it. For me, preselection can be confusing. With two empty boxes, I can see what I have chosen - whether that's one weapon, or two. I know at a glance what I'm doing. With two already filled boxes, I have to think about whether those are my choices or if I need to change them. I have to know if I've picked one weapon or two and which one is the one I selected and whether the right one will change when I pick my second weapon. It's not the extra clicking time, it's all the extra thinking time.

I am not surprised that doesn't happen for you. You are extremely experienced and have a top tier pet who doesn't need to change weapons often. But for me, with my T9 and much less data about which weapons do what (or scrolls, or even potions and shards), I find the extra thinking pushes me past my limit. I lose my place, make mistakes, get frustrated, or all of those. It turns out that preselection makes battling take so much longer for me when I get past Level 20 doing Battle Quests (as one example) that it actually winds up taking me more time to finish BQs for the day - even though I can blaze through Level 20 in a small fraction of the previous time. Hope that explanation makes sense and helps answer your question.

Quote
all battlers are helped by 1/2 the number of clicks on the average turn
That's just not true. As I tried to explain above, clicking isn't everything and isn't even the thing that takes the most time for everyone. Less clicking doesn't help me if the way it's implemented winds up making things harder for me.

Quote by Silvy
However, if this is not possible, can we AT LEAST, please have the text of weapons and is effects, separated from scroll use and opponent&;s weapons/effects/scrolls?
While this is not an issue for me at all (since all the text for a given weapon or scroll is together, I guess I just add the separators somehow in my mind), after looking at your images, I can see how this would be extremely helpful for those who don't automatically do that processing. Just another example of how we all think and work differently. (The human brain is such a fascinating and wondrous thing!)

Haha, Jason is .

I think it would be ideal to be able to show more potions and scrolls at once, similar to the current weapon selection. The issue is screen space. If anyone wants to make a mock-up in Paint or whatever of a suggestion that takes the limited screen space into account, be my guest. The weapon selection column is fixed at 325px width and 650px height iirc. Each item image is 64 x 64 pixels normally so you have to work with that as well. Be aware you can't make them too small because we don't want to make it too hard for the visually impaired.

The values I came to were reasoned to be the best compromise for everyone, also be aware Subeta is currently not mobile responsive (I've explained this before in various places why this is) which is why I'm using the fixed values for now.

But I'm all for a better scroll/potion selection that shows more than 2-3 items at once, it's just an issue of figuring out how to utilize the space. I genuinely would appreciate if anyone has suggestions.

One thing I was thinking is that increasing the width (from 325 to 375 or 400) would allow more space, but that would cause the left-hand side to be smaller, which there seemed to be backlash against in the first place, so I'm hesitant to shrink it more than it currently is. The left-hand side is the side that adjusts to your screen size by the way, stretching to fill the remaining space across the screen whereas the right-hand stays a fixed width.
