Flash use is declining on websites. HTML5 is taking over its place in common things like videos and ads with simple animations. It's easy to create animations with Flash. But the future's where it's at, and it will be HTML and Javascript.
Plus, Flash can be buggy and crash or hang on different machines and situations. Also, it's doesn't work for all mobile devices.
If you take a look at the independent game demo Crosscode you'll be surprised what HTML5 could do.
I've thrown out plenty of ideas to make speed useful but all of them would take coding so I don't feel like they are worth posting again. I find it rather depressing that with everything that's happened the BC still doesn't deserve more than 15 mins of programming time once every few years. Its like the red headed stepchild got a dye job but when you get down to it everyone still knows the red is there and treats it accordingly.
[edit] I'm now in the same boat as DrJeff. I have no idea where I should be putting points or training. I feel like I should be BQing with my now uncapped 2nd pet to try to get his spd up but without knowing what is going on I feel like it could be a waste. Also wondering/hoping the exp cost will change for Tier 13 so I don't want to spend his exp. Frustrating and confusing.
didnt the past 3 years of cs opponents not generate some money towards BC programming?
where did that money go?
the first wave were books , second were trinkets , the one now are bgs. so each wave of unlockables cater to folks other than the bc crowd, cant that money get at least a little peek & tinkering under the bc hood?
Perhaps what needs to come from this is a board much like the cap one, only much needed BC changes this time? Maybe if we raise enough collective hell, something will happen. Maybe.
Like typically in the past, a new CS challenger or two was enough to pacify the battle community when we got unsettled. And I'm sure Keith knows well enough its not like users aren't going to buy these things just because the BC is jacked up so why fix it if shits still selling and people still use it?
I get its broken, that much is painfully obvious anytime a plot involves battling (and the site kills itself) or there's a boss battle, or jellys, or morostide... and the site kills itself. It's obvious the code is crippled, but god if the rest of the site can get patches why can't the BC? if people dedicate this much to a broken aspect of the site, and staff want more people to use it.... it needs to be usable. Both in stability (not killing the site, not eating wins at the turn of the hour, not eating people's last BC), but also functionality.
It's ridiculous to expect past, present, and future BAs to create an engaging BC that draws users in and keeps the veterans interested, make the stats we have logically applied, and be able to make changes while maintaining balance.... when they're given two sticks, two crayons, and a paperclip.
I mean I get it, programmers are spread thin as it is, but instead of worrying about minion battling and one shot animated plot games they could take a day to program some very much needed real battling needs. Y'know, the battling that people dedicate a great deal of time, sP, csc, and real money in?
I don't think that's too much to ask, for like static speed... scroll libraries, THE ABILITY TO ARRANGE ATTACHED SCROLLS AND SAVE THEIR ORDER EVEN?? Dodging, etc etc.
^^
I agree with a board like the cap one in the feedback or suggestions forum.
But the BAs need to be heavily involved in the first few posts to outline their capabilities/(generic) goals and be clear.
Or you will have another situation like this again.
You cant expect NC and users to be happy with it. people WILL get pissed, we see it in the feedback forums all the time.
edit: nc = no contact
MacGyver would have it done ages ago with a crayon left over...
What we really need is a certain site owner to actually take some interest in the subject. He clearly has said he has 0, and shown he doesn't even really understand the system at all. Certainly he has some ideas on how to change it though, right?
So what said really needs to be done along with some serious input from keith. It needs to be an active on going conversation, not "Don't worry I bookmarked this to watch it (but I'll forget about it for weeks or months at a time)".
I'm totally willing to sit through with the "broken" yet functional system, if it's going to be fixed, not just talked about but something coming from it. Even knowing it's probably going to take more than subeta soon even after a concrete plan is made.
You can't force someone - the site owner here - to just "become interested" in something. He doesn't care and it doesn't hide the fact that he doesn't care : he doesn't like the BC, and despite all the monthly challengers and whatnot the revenue from the BC is still hella low compared to the rest. People need to stop thinking this is some kind of rainbow paradise island
Why should Keith be involved in everything ? Hell, this is a company now, it's broken down into departments for a reason. Let him do his own very job, which as opposed to what people seem to think, isn't to be everyone's personal concierge. You can't pull the Keith card everytime something goes off rail.
There are battle admins, and then there are programmers. If you can't pay them, then you have nothing, and you have to do with what you have.

Because without that we aren't ever going to get any progress, he's not going to spare resources for battling. I think it's pretty much that simple, if he never has any interest things will remain as they are. The BAs are never going to give us new code because they can't. Employees do what they're told to do for the most part, this isn't some big corporation, it's a small business. He is still actively engaged in the goings on, that can be seen from a user standpoint. People can be made to care about something. I would venture to say that a good portion of the top battlers are some of the most loyal and dedicated users.
I'm not sure what you're trying to get at, are you basically just saying it hasn't happened before so it won't now and we have what we have? Or you're worried that if he gets involved he'll just completely screw everything up because he just doesn't know enough about it? I wouldn't think you'd be satisfied with that... It's clearly not good enough for most people at least.
I think things can get done without Keith's stamp of approval needing to be on every page of it. He despises battling and if we had to do things his way - you'd despise battling too and most likely leave.
Employees always have more traction in small businesses than in large corporations, you got this backwards. Keith allocates money but you can't require him to be all over this thing because he doesn't care for it. You just have to give him a good reason to - and currently, that's by suggesting new ideas on how to make things better.
And a parenthesis about suggestions new things : It'd be great if everytime someone has an idea, they instantly imagine that their worst ennemy just had that idea, and that their main goal is to poke holes and flaws into that idea. Once you've done that and worked your idea over and can't think of anything else that could go wrong is the right time to talk about it. Because that's how you avoid good ideas being overlooked.

The problem is not Keith not having interest in battling the problem is the users. Every time something is done to fix battle everyone starts complaining because THEY DON'T want ANY changes.
fix a weapon that is overpowered [complainers: They took away my icons]
fix a weapon that is underpowered [comp: They made my other weapon i was selling worth less]
fix healing that you have to admit some get extreme [comp: They took our healing]
fix speed [comp: They are making me train speed boohoo] seriously you should have to start with and you would have seen you healed close to the same [i healed more]
fix opponents [comp: They made it where i can't beat him anymore]
point is what ever is FIXED the complainers bitch about CHANGES MADE
Live your Life to the fullest cause you never know what will happen tomorrow......
Yes, people react to changes, are you surprised ?
People that take bold decisions to make changes should know better than to pay attention to every single thing people say in reaction to that. However, not all decisions are good, and you're not going anywhere if you don't get feedback from your users.

i agree 110% with feedback but if something needs fixing it needs fixing even though its something every single user hates

And who's to say that the changes we had this past week end, that were now reverted, "fixed" the coliseum ?
Changing something =/= fixing something.

you are oversimplifying and missing the point.
There are valid complaints. And there's just plain whining. Your post only covers the whining part.
I also think you are overusing the word "fixed"
actually the SPEED=HEALING did fix 2 things in 1
1 made speed more active 2 fixed over healing
and a 3rd not a fix but a boost more blocked icons [which made it so you did't need so much healing a win win update
Live your Life to the fullest cause you never know what will happen tomorrow......
I'm just going to +1 the fact that you're overusing the word "fixing".
The solutions that were offerd to us were flawed at best and you seem to be overlooking the other issues they raised. You're not fixing something if you're creating a new issue : you're just displacing the problem.

I just had an idea. Everyone is worried about not knowing how to stat their pets. Well here ya go.
Create an item that resets a pets stat build, But allow the pet to retain the stats. Like a stat reset card or something. Make it how ever much is needed. This will allow everyone to try different builds without it being set in stone. A whole page with stat layout and ability to put 1000 stats in speed or 3000. Not just one at a time like with boosting. Do not allow level into the mix though. Because for people who boosted their level is higher then needed. So basic stats only. And allow the reset card to always be available that way we can try different builds and play with our pets in different ways.

Wouldn't that be easy, boost a ton of cheap ass speed and defense and convert it into health and strength.
We got the leeches if we want to arrange our builds. They're essentially free as they come from battle tokens.

Ohhhh wow, Post Likes work again?!?! Seems so. Pounded the shit outta some of these. :) esp the OPs last sentence.
Anywho... There is one way that a business "gets to fixing" stuff and that is when not doing so, hurts their bottom line. Meaning: If e v e r y one was to s t o p buying anything battle related from the CS ( whether with Cash bought CSC or CSC bought with free money - sP ). But lets be real... just dont see that happening.
This site does COST money to operate, BUT ( yes there is a but ), they have to be making enough to fix something that alot of users use ( even broken ), and that is the BC. Because basically, it seems like the BC just doesnt matter or it would been "fixed" ( the programming side ), by now. I myself have spent an ungodly amount of r e a l cash on this site and for what? Battle. I bitch, but its not like I am going to rage quit ( not after spending this much time and money ).
So I guess we just enjoy, like the bitter admin posted, the busted BC. :P [edit]
Dragonfable did something like this years ago ( yes a mmorpg and subeta is not one ). I like this idea. It could even cost a good amount of sP, for a nice sP sink?
I hate the stat reset idea personally. You could just edit your pets every time a different challenger came along and it would create an issue with the different stat costs of health vs other things. People shouldn't have to edit their entire existing builds - that is basically the point of everyone's complaints.
