Baking is a bit more complicated, I'd say. For each recipe, there's a selection of basic items (flour, sugar, eggs, etc.) as well as items specific to that given recipe. Instead of being produced instantaneously as with alchemy, there's a timer associated with each recipe. You return after it's finished, and either the item has completed successfully or it's burnt. There's a common misconception that burning has to do with whether you retrieve it on time, but time actually has no bearing on it, and it's just a chance that's related to your baking level. (That is, something that you've recently unlocked has a much higher chance of burning while it's equal to your baking level than when you've gained further levels.) The amount of experience you gain from a recipe is kind of tough to track as well. I've read that it has to do with the item's baking time - for instance, a recipe that takes 50 minutes should give considerably more progress toward your next level than something that takes 15 minutes. I don't think you see diminishing returns from lower-level recipes, however.
